My boyfriend and I shared truffle fries and Margherita pizza and it hit the spot. It was so good and for the first time in the history of our relationship, the two of us together finished all the food we ordered. My boyfriend said it was so good he literally couldn't stop eating even though he was full. We also ate all the truffle fries and loved how they were the perfect balance between soft and crispy. The other couple we were hanging out with loved their food too. My ex-coworker got the beef fries and her boyfriend got another type of fries and both of them had no complaints. They loved their food and also cleared their plates. When I went to the Tripadvisor page I saw a lot of reviews claiming that this place ripped them off. For the food I described above, drinks, and waters, the bill at the table came to just under 70 euros. I don't know if this is more expensive than it should have been, I didn't look at the prices on the menu when I ordered, but hopefully this helps someone else.

Regardless, In 't Aepjen is known as one of (if not) the city's oldest brown cafes/bars, with many claiming that it opened in 1519. For a traditional Amsterdam brown cafe experience, it's pretty hard to find a better spot with more history than this one. Decorated head to toe with monkey decor, legend has it that cashless sailors would exchange exotic pets (mainly monkeys) acquired on their trips for drinks and to settle debts here. At one point, the bar became overrun with so many monkeys that customers began to complain of fleas and lice, so they had to get rid of them. What's more? It's said that In 't Aepjen is housed in one of the oldest wooden houses in Amsterdam, one of just a few to survive a fire that burned down the city in 1452. Legend and history aside, this bar is an awesome place to grab a drink. Between the decor, atmosphere, ambiance, and drink selection, In 't Aepjen has everything going for it. Service is nice and friendly, drinks are affordable, and the location is central and convenient. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our time here, and would definitely come back again next time we are in Amsterdam.

I got hit by the men's bathroom door upwards of 15 times before finally rage-quitting and making all my friends scoot close together at the other side of the table. Everyone here speaks English, and the small dance floor is lit up with different colored lights. The atmosphere is very San Francisco dive-bar-esque. On a Sunday night at 3am, there were about 30-40 people there which was pretty impressive if you ask me. Also, the bouncer is hilarious and super nice. They started kicking us all out around 3:50am so we just walked along the red light district and canals for the rest of the night before heading back to the airport.
