I really thought I wasn't going to make it, and there, out of the middle of nowhere, appears a sign for this pancake house. I hate pancake houses, but I had never, ever, EVER been so happy to see one. I turned on my internal turbo and we made it. The fare is pretty standard - pancakes, some tostis and a few omelets. I can recommend the boerenomelet - enough for two people to share and very satisfying. They have places to fill water bottles, toilets, snacks to-go (bars, etc.), etc.

It's a pretty small place which is not a bad thing in this case. More cozy than crowded. The interior is a welcome living-room mixed with a classic tea room. Perfect place to sit down with a coffee in the morning or a cup of thea in the afternoon. There is a selection of crepes, galettes and croques (never knew there was a difference) but also cakes and pies available. The pies and cakes are freshly baked so when you can get them before they're out of stock you're in luck. I chose a galette with cheese and bacon and I must say it was very good! Can't wait to go back to try the other crepes!

A star less than Bogart's in Apeldoorn. ~Edit, now I've…read moreeaten at Humprey's in Utrecht, I can knock another star off Amersfoort as Utrecht just falls short of Bogart's, but is still better than Amersfoort when it comes to service. Obviously this place has the same menu, same ambiance and is just basically the same restaurant. But as Martin R mentions, the servers fall a bit short of the concept. Whether inexperience or just a plain lack of interest, none of them really seemed to be doing their job right. Some even falling short of adequate. Making mistakes in a drink order and not paying enough attention to guests whilst making their rounds through the room. If you're checking up on your guests, really do that; pay attention, look around, see where someone might need something. A definite difference with Bogart's where the managers (which they actually have) circled the floor and every once in a while they came to ask if you were satisfied or still needed something. In my opinion this is what Humprey's Amersfoort needs: a manager. Someone to guide the young servers and to pick up on potential problems that guests might have. Though I must give credit where it is due, the girl that handled the bill did ask how I thought dinner was and also listened to what I told her. Hopefully she can at least run with that. Also, not sure if this was on purpose or due to the miscommunication, but we only had to pay for half of our drinks. I'm hoping that this was on purpose. Okay, now on to the positives because they are there and they are big positives. The food is great. As it is in every Humphrey's. The food is paired well and also cooked well. As an added bonus, Amersfoort is quite picturesque. I definitely recommend going for a stroll after dinner. Sadly, we had no time for this, but I'll be back for dinner here, even if it is only to have that evening stroll around the town.

The outdoor terrace is lovely, but secretly I wished it was raining so I could sit on that massive leather couch inside. Too bad. This place would have been better off with a buzzer and picking up your own meal at the counter. Instead, we spent too many moments at the table ackwardly trying to make eyecontact with the waiteress in order to get our orders through. In all honesty, she did seem very busy. It was Friday night, they said. It was busy, they said. But none of those things should have come as a surprise. Friday is listed on the calender and happens every week and for the busy; wel they take reservations so they could have known. Something went terribly wrong here in the staffing. From cooks to service, everyone seemed below 17. Nothing with that per se, but waiting tables is a profession and takes some years to learn properly. Which is why it might seem they were also desperately busy, while on the other hand eveyone was waiting. In addition, we came in with an a "Albert Heijn 2e gang gratis actie", which turned out a total ripoff (they raised the price of the menu by 50% compared to the weekly menu, and then gave us the second one for free..). It made me feel naked and ashamed afterwards. All in all, the food was not bad. I had a vitello tonato which was worth recommending and a duck which I will soon forget. My company had the soup tasting out of which one was way to salty, one was way too spicey and third was a tomato soup with a spoon of quark. The dessert was an hour too late and after it came, we had to wait for cutlery for five minutes so it almost melted on our plates. They say never say never again, but I don't know whome "they" exactly are. Certainly none of the people I was dining with. Never! P.S. While paying I had a quick peek in their kitchen (also staffed with youngsters). It was hardly what you would call a neat and clean workplace. I didn't get stomach cramps afterwards or anything, but if I had, I'd need not look far for a cause.
