This review is about the Market House Cafe BEFORE it changed hands (on 12th April 2011 I believe)…read more Only time will tell if it remains as good or even improves. This is our favourite cafe in Ledbury and we go in there nearly every Saturday for coffee during the kids' ballet and quite often for lunch. Food is good and reasonably priced, especially kids meals. A kids sandwich is around £2 and they have a good selection of paninis and sandwiches and specials. Their omelettes are delicious. The two reasons that the cafe didn't get 5 stars are that, when it's busy, the food is a long time coming. It's worth it in the end and generally the staff will let you know how long it's likely to be (and they're normally pessimistic about it; it normally arrives before they said it would). The other minor gripe is the men's toilet; I can't get in and shut the door without rubbing against the pan. As I said above, I believe the cafe changed hands on 12th April. I hope that they will continue to offer as good value for money and quality as Richard (the previous proprietor) did. I've seen many cafes go to the dogs after a change of hands like this :-(

I find a lot of coffee places just don't really want you stay and they have hard, uncomfy furniture to reflect that. But not here! This place often has events that extend its opening hours, too. My favourite is the 'big comfy folk club' which are folk and acoustic sessions hosted on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. Next one is on 4th March and tickets are only a fiver! Brilliant intimate venue, and the performers usually stick around for a while afterwards which is nice (: OH ALSO, WINE! The big comfy book shop serves alcohol! The owner spent over a year compiling books to open his shop, and ever since has kept a good variety of books that are unique to customers, or a popular search result of a used book. There is always fresh coffee, tea options, beer and wine, and some sort of snacks like crisps or cake for sale. Seating is available to hang out with friends for a little while or to start tucking into your future purchase. Also I noticed that live folk music nights and game nights regularly occur here too! We were heading back to London the next day, and at first thought "too bad this isn't on our way home," but the next morning decided we wanted to see more of the park anyway, as well as a few other points north before our weeklong adventure adjourned... What a pleasure it was to stop here on that dreary morning! When we arrived around 10:30am, the whole place was bustling with what turned out to be a tour group of retirees, about to tour the historic adjacent mill. The setup is counter service style: order your items, take your number and choose a table (indoors or outdoors). Most of the indoor tables overlook the brook running through the mill; the outdoor tables are in the courtyard of the mill buildings. They don't have a true breakfast, per se, but they have teas, coffee/espresso drinks, breads, cakes and cookies available all day, most of which are made using grains locally harvested and milled right there. There are some gluten free options available as well. At 11:30, their lunch menu is available and features sandwiches, soup and salads, all made from locally sourced, processed and grown Welsh foods. We were still finishing up our morning coffee, enjoying the chill vibe of the place (especially after the tour group moved on - haha!) by the time lunch was available, so we decided to stick around a little longer and try it out too! After much deliberation about how to best sample their offerings (everything sounded AMAZING), we opted for a soup/sandwich combo with the ham, cheese & mustard sandwich and fresh garden pea and mint soup, along with a "board" that included salad, two cheeses, local ham, an apple, fresh cherry tomatoes, house chutney and fresh bread. So simple, but so delicious!! We ate it ALL... I can't recommend enough the sheer quality of this real, simple but delicious local food. Other items to note: Credit cards require a £10 minimum charge. Locally made gifts and gourmet food items are available for purchase. Restroom entrance is in the courtyard, but there are public toilets in the adjacent building, facing the street as well. Free Wi-Fi. Check out the Talgarth Mill Craft Shop next door if you are looking for locally made Welsh treasures to take home. Free parking (and recycling drop-off) is available a couple of short blocks away, just off the highway. The Talgarth visitor's centre across the street is there for all kinds of information about the area, or, if you'd just like to converse with the friendly locals.

It was delicious. Warm fresh scone served with yummy cream and jam. I also ordered the chocolate cake tea with the scone and it was surprisingly good. Had some chocolate flavor and tasted good with milk. Hubby ordered Mac and cheese and it was served piping hot with a slice of garlic bread. Pretty good too! Kiddo ordered hot chocolate with marshmallows and a chocolate cake. The cake itself was soft and moist and not overly sweet. Went well with the tea and hot chocolate. The hot chocolate seemed standard and she seemed to like it. The place is not overly pricey for a touristy place. Service was also good and friendly.

Although Vintage Tea Rooms are the current trend I welcome the quirkiness and makes it more of a unique day out as opposed to the high street franchises and once again supporting local and independents. I stumbled across this tea room by accident whilst visiting Barnt green and as I was on my own they just about had a place for me to have lunch, it's very busy with small groups of ladies lunching with their three tiered ornate cake stands and afternoon teas. It needs to be booked well in advance to reserve a place. I had a simple lunch of soup served in an ornate tea cup and a small plate of sandwiches and of course Earl Grey Tea for one. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I will definitely visit again with friends and it's only a short walk from Barnt Green station. I selected the Small Farmhouse breakfast which consisted of sausage, bacon, egg, hash brown, mushrooms, baked beans and a slice of toast with butter and jam. My husband selected the Farmhouse breakfast which had the same ingredients but twice as much. Of special note are the sausages which were very meaty and that the breakfast was cooked to perfection with none of the grease that can often be present. They also serve a full range of hot drinks so I was able to select a decaf latte. The menu includes some sandwich-type options and there were a few scones etc. for those who don't have our appetites. Service was fast for us. We arrived soon after they opened so only about 4 tables were already filled, so I cannot speak to service speed when they are busy, but they looked to have plenty of staff on duty.
