On the weekend they have a $10 breakfast which is extremly good value. Nice coffee, great meals but its hard to ignore the staff. Good selection and they do have a good cook so you know the meals will be okay. I have sat through many a meal watching other people eat. Not so at the Jazz Apple Kitchen. Hallelujah! Food I can eat! This was for many years the site of the Blue Tongue Cafe, a bit of an institution locally, so I'm very glad to see the new owners have kept up the old homely-if-your-home-was-a-funky-Newtown-stylishly-impoverished-but-cool-hangout vibe. They have local muso's playing Friday and weekend nights for tips, even the odd board game night I believe. They're small and do have quite the clientele, so it's advised to book ahead if you can. Best of all, and for which I praise them to the skies, is that they're allergen-aware to an unusually high level, almost everything on the menu has at least gluten-free options. Us poor, deprived types need to eat out too... The GF fruit bread I chose for brekky was actually really good (any of you aware of the crisis state of GF breads will understand the rarity of that statement). It's homemade, chock full of fruity goodness, and the coffee was large and satisying. I wish I'd been there around lunchtime, the menu made me embarassingly drooly: 'strawberry fennel sald with pistachio dukkah and balsamic dressing'. And a 55cent babycino for the littlies, yay. I sat at a little table ouside and read the community notices on the wall (local Crop & Swap produce meet and classes for mental silence). Walked home happy and without going into anaphylactic shock. Always a plus..

It's decor was lovely with local artist's pieces for sale adorning the walls. I wish I could speak more highly of the food... however this was one of those experiences which left me feeling that I could have saved the money and just cooked a better meal in my kitchen. There was a 15-20 minute wait for coffee and since it was so busy, we were left sitting outside in the cold wondering if they'd forgotten us. A further 20 minute wait (total of 40mins) for food. The food was the biggest disappointment! I had the morrocan breakfast. It was bland with a capital B. The turkish bread with soggy and thinly cut, under several pieces of moist pan fried, thick unseasoned eggplant. I don't think the dish was spiced at all and there was so salt and pepper on the table for us to at least add some flavour to the dish with. ... about as far as the beautiful spiced dishes of Morocco as you can get.

Its located in a part of Church St that you usually drive past without noticing so I'd never seen it before. Doesn't look much from the front but when you walk inside you can see that they have a large outdoor terrace at the back and inside is fitted out really well. There were plenty of brekkie options, the service was quick and friendly and the food was really fresh and full of flavour. The prices were also really reasonable and brekkie for 4 people was just over $60 with everyone getting a meal and a coffee of some type. The one thing that struck me as quite amusing is that there is a big 'halal' sign out the front yet several of the dishes come with bacon. So anyway I tried their halal bacon and damn it was good!

Slow service, around 20 minutes to prepare a sandwich and when it did arrive, the order was incorrect and not enjoyable - you don't toast salmon and capers to death! It's a nice looking cafe and the staff were friendly, maybe I just caught them on a bad day, so might give it another chance.

The coffee standards are high here with the store getting lots of recognition in various publications over the years. The store is quite cute and they have a enough seats inside for a decent crowd and also some Sears along the arcade too. It's on Spring street though so can be quite loud around here. Gusto is great for takeout though and you never have to wait very long. They got a great range of muffins , pastries, croissants and breads to go great with your coffee and also serve some light meals. Today I ordered peanut butter on Turkish bread. Really simple of course but very tasty none the less and perfect to keep you going until lunch. The coffee comes with a cute little bit of chocolate on top just to make your day.

Their breakfast-bar layout offers a great place for quickly scoffing a muffin and slurping your coffee, but I think there are better places if you want to relax and enjoy watching the world go past.

The morning breakfast wrap with eggs, avocado, cheese, tomato and bacon are fantastic (hold the bacon for me though). Did I mention they are huge by australian standards? I recently had the avocado bruschetta and it was great. Bruschetta can be hit or miss but this one was really good and again, quite big. My husband is there at least a few times a week and the friendly staff all know him well. Right before Christmas they walked out and gave him a bag full of cakes and muffins with a sweet note saying thanks and happy holidays to their loyal customers. The decor is quirky, I like the eclectic mix of funky furniture and art- but it is a bit of a mishmash and I'd like to give it a bit of a re-vamp. I need to get back there more often and try more of the food but with this 9 to 5 job of mine it's not always easy to find the time. My only complaint?
