The home baking is very nice and we enjoyed coffee and cakes on more than one occasion recently! I would say that it's rather expensive though. There are plenty of places to sit inside and a few tables and chairs outside by the water where you can sit and watch boats passing through the locks. You can buy postcards and a few books too - and even the Avon So Soft midge repellent which is needed by so many in the West of Scotland (fortunately I am never bitten!)

It's located on the edge of the canal basin at the north end of the Crinan canal, just down from the hotel, (which does excellent if pricey high teas), with windows looking out over the water. Throughout the cafe on the walls are scattered local artists works, mostly for sale and in a room to one end is more work around the walls, mostly with guide prices beside them. There is also a selection of old boat engines and pumps on the floor for you to have a look at. We had some of the homemade cake and scones, which were all lovely, my usual drink of coke and the folks had tea and coffee. Prices reasonable and staff helpful if you wanted to know anything.

I really liked this tea room - it's charming and quaint, and nicely decorated. We visited for lunch…read moreand when we first arrived, were the only customers but that quickly changed as the place filled up with locals, golfers, bike riders and walkers. The menu is pretty big (physically - it's a massive board) and has sandwiches and baked potatoes on it. I ended up going for the chicken sandwich even though I actually really just wanted a bolognaise baked potato but that was in the kids section and I was too embarrassed to try to order it. The sandwich was lovely - you could choose your bread and whether you wanted it toasted which is always nice. Everything is freshly made, and I was really happy with the filling, packed full of nice chicken breast pieces. We decided to get a cake too, and had choc-orange cake which was just heavenly. Nice and decadent without being too OTT and a good size to share between two (I'm sure Graeme would have preferred having the slice to himself though!). The only downside here was that we didn't know it was cash only, and there's no ATM in Machrie so we had to drive back to Blackwaterfoot (5 miles) to get cash out and go back to pay. No big deal as we had the car and the staff were really nice about it and trusted us to come back! This place is really handy for the Machrie Moor Standing Stones and would be a great place to stop after visiting them. They also have free wifi.

My friend and I both got the full breakfast (big yin) and they're fine to swap some things out you might not like (black pudding for a hashbrown? heck yes). Cosy, warm, lots of wood and cool lighting - and super friendly. Looks like an outpost of Artisan Roast - and apparently it is independent but AR is involved. If the aesthetic didn't give it away, the place stocks AR coffee, cakes and bread. Food is simple - alongside cakes they have bagels, toast, yogurt and granola and do sandwiches at lunch. They will be open later in the evening than some other places - I think he mentioned 6 or 7pm but can't remember which! I only had a cappuccino and a chat with the guy running the place but the service was warm and friendly and the coffee was excellent. Competition for the also excellent CC&T a block along and The Hidden Lane Cafe but a great addition to the local area.
