    Anarkali Tandoori Restaurant

Controversial review from Dan who claims that the Anarkali is superior to the Viceroy of India. I'm…read moresure the Viceroy would not be happy with this hastily blurted opinion. I must say I agree regarding Miah's - theirs is a gimmick Indian restaurant (in a church, innit) and the poshness of the venue does not bring it up to the level of the Anakarli or the Viceroy in terms of service and deliciousness. I think the Viceroy is slightly better because I have more amusing memories of my dad's friends asking for 'coca cola' in a really laboured way so the waiters would understand (they speak fluent English). Either way, St Helen's road spoils you for choice of Indians.

Yum…read more The Anarkali is the best Indian restaurant among the many in the St. Helen's Road area, just pipping the Viceroy to the title, and pushing many people's favourite - Miah's - into third place. The Viceroy's staff are far far friendlier, and Miah's boasts a great location (a refurbished church) but Anarkali just edges it for the quality of the food. It really is very nice. Even the Sunday buffet is good quality - much better than Miah's. It is quite amusing to read the Anarkali's menu. On the back there is a big pretentious spiel about how there is (I'm paraphrasing) no such thing as a curry, just the many dishes created by wives and mothers in Bangladesh - although that doesn't stop them from serving Chicken Tikka Massala and the like. I'm also pretty sure that a lot of Bangladeshi vegetarian wives and mothers aren't tucking into massive portions of meat on a nightly basis either. We'll let the Anarkali off though. I used to live 2 minutes walk from it. This was not good for my pot or my wallet.

I'm running on fumes after a long travel day and after a power nap I was craving spicy food…read more A quick search showed Gigi's with rave reviews and Chinese sounded like it would fulfill my cravings. The restaurant is a short 6 minutes walk from the Marriott and the walk itself was a beautiful stroll past boats, tall apartments and quaint brick flats with little patios off of them. I walked into Gigi's and didn't see anyone at first. But I walked up to the bar and was greeted warmly the moment they saw me. Since I ordered takeaway so I could fat girl it in pjs in my hotel room, I don't have any comments regarding service. But being greeted with smiles makes me think service for sit down will be just as welcoming. My order was ready to go and smelled amazing. I got to my room and realized they hadn't put in utensils--oops. I'm so used to places in the US who throw in enough utensils for 4 people based on the amount of food I order hahaha. So make sure you ask for utensils if you're not taking your food back home. I ordered the cucumber salad, the Lazy Chicken(dry fried chicken no sauce but with plenty of kick due to the 3 types of peppers in the dish) and YuXiang aubergine with pork (saucy, mildly spicy eggplant with ground pork). WOW. I'm taking a break from shoving my dinner into my face to write this review. First impression is the food isn't greasy. It's flavorful, the eggplant is perfectly cooked, and the chicken crisp. I really enjoyed my cucumber salad which had a mellow, slightly soy flavor that offset the spices nicely. Everything (including rice) was under 25£. I was able to order online through their website and pay which was really easy and made pick up very smooth. If you're local or a visitor I highly recommend the food from Gigi's. I really like the fact that they don't use MSG and the food was non greasy. The portions are generous and the prices fair.
