two plates of food on a table

My wife and I had a great experience with Cafe Italia. The Caesar dressing was homemade and the focaccia croutons were on point. I had chicken parm, the portion was huge. The chicken had a good flavor but the red sauce was next level. My wife ordered gnocchi and was equally impressed. The chef/owner was polite and attentive, love to see the husband wife combo work so well!!!

We just moved to Sanibel on Monday and found this cute cafe while shopping. The food is AMAZING and the service is excellent. It's a family pen businesses, husband is an real Italian ( the wife told me). We like it so much and we went back on Wednesday.

My favorite Italian food in Ft. Myers! We ordered the penne and stuffed gnocchi. The penne was great, but wow -- the gnocchi was out of this world!! I can't stop thinking about it! I appreciated the toned-down but elegant atmosphere of Cafe Italia. The complimentary baguette with olive tapenade was yummy and made for a nice starter. The service was great, as was all the food. Apart from the gnocchi, I highly recommend the tiramisu. It is light as air and peppered with a generous amount of shaved chocolate. I've found a new Ft. Myers staple!

    Take Out Perfection!

If you haven't tried this little gem of a restaurant, now is time! I absolutely LOVE their porchetta (pork) sandwich. It is mouthwatering with slow cooked pork, sun dried tomatoes (homemade), carmelized onion, roasted lemon rind, pesto, and fresh shaved Parmesan cheese. All on a delicious roll. It truly is better than any sandwich I have had on my adventures in Italy. PLEASE support this local business!

Great Food, Service, and Value!! We ordered NYE catering for 9 people to pick up as were staying on Ft Myers Beach. The food was AMAZING and high quality! Everyone was super happy with the dinner and the service was great. We would recommend the Caprese Crostini's (to die for), Eggplant Parmesan (less breaded than traditional, but we enjoyed more this way), Chicken Marsala, and Tiramisu Cake.

I do not like my chicken thick and not browned a little bit. It was kind of tough. Also not enough cheese on chicken parmigiana. Only parmigiana and not mozzarella. Picatta did not have much flavor. Not my style of Italian I guess. Bread dip tasted too much like olives for me.

    Fabulous salads!

What a fantastic jewel of a place in an unassuming shopping center strip! It took us forever to order because everything sounded fabulous. I had a caprese salad that was incredibly tasty -- ripe red tomatoes, homemade mozzarella cheese accented with basil and balsamic dressings. I also had a small pizza, a simple cheese and sauce edition, that was crunchy and tasty. Hubby had a house salad with a simple homemade dressing and lasagna that was so good he cleaned his plate, even after helping me polish off my caprese salad. The service was fast and friendly. The restaurant also sells gelato and pastries that I feel sure are amazing, but alas, we were too full to sample them. Highly recommend giving the chain restaurants a miss and visiting this wonderful little place!

With reservations for a birthday dinner we were a little early but seated right away in a busy dining room. I ordered a Shrimp Livornaise with housemade pasta. The dish was tasty and the shrimp were large but the pasta was minimal and just ok. We split a Cedar salad and saw a $5 charge on our bill for the kitchen splitting the salad, of which we were not informed when ordering. Also our bill included a 3% "COST OF DOING BUSINESS" charge when first presented, not knowing if we were paying by Cash or Credit card. Not the same experience as our first visit.

But as we left, we both said to each other that something was off and we wouldn't be back. I can't put my finger on it exactly. It didn't help that they charge an extra fee for doing business (!) that was on the bill presented to us --even before they knew whether we were going to pay with cash or a credit card -- and that they had a splitting dish charge of $5 (which I had them remove; as it was never explained, only offered). Or that they never acknowledged my husband's birthday. But they did have our reservation correctly and we were seated immediately. The room is large and airy and open. But it's also without any warmth or personality. The large loud table of young couples seated next to us -- who didn't know what most of the menu items were -- didn't help. Our service was okay, too. But here again something felt a tad off and fake. We started by sharing a caprese salad. We added extra balsamic glaze. For our main dishes, my husband had the shrimp Livornese. Large shrimp served with olives and capers in a tomato sauce. The pasta was skimpy and he doubted that it was housemade. I had their salmon. It came with mashed potatoes and a couple asparagus spears. It was good. For dessert, we had the berry cobbler without the ice cream. It was disappointing. And would have been better served hot -- not barely lukewarm. I'm glad we came back to try them. Now we know.

Our waitress felt like a Southern grandma who cared about us. She really made the whole evening worthwhile. As a vegan, I had wished they offered more options, but I settled on ordering a pizza with veggies and no cheese. I liked the crust which was thin and crispy. There were a good amount of vegetables too. I ended up adding a little salt and red pepper flakes to make it more flavorful. Oh, and I ordered a soda which came in a very large cup! My wife and I were tired of the same 7 restaurants that we seem to visit every time we come to…read moreCaptiva. The fact that 3 of those 7 have been permanently (or semi-permanently) shut down notwithstanding- we finally decided to explore a few new places. Sunshine popped up in Yelp! and it sounded interesting and looked like a cute little place (according to the wife) If you're not specifically LOOKING for it- you'll easily miss it, if that makes sense. It's located right next to RC Otters (their outside seating seamlessly segues into Otters' outdoor tables) and there's very limited parking. They do, in fact, have their own parking lot but, due to hurricane rebuilding construction, it's quite difficult to figure out the maze-like separation of fencing and one-way arrows, ha ha! Once we found a spot and wandered over to the restaurant, the hostess/waitress (and, I suspect? part owner?) came out to greet us. We were seated -outside at our request -at a nice table underneath an outdoor pavilion-style area. Ceiling fans were abundant and the air was redolent with the aromas of cooking from more than just one or two kitchens! My wife and I ordered the Focaccia bread with roasted garlic and a balsamic reduction, and the Lobster Bisque. The bread was-- JJ Walker style-- DY-NO-MITE! And the two condiments really worked well with amazing bread. My wife's soup was fabulous- it came in a crock baked with a puff-pastry shell over the top. Each bite composed of savory pastry, large chunks of lobster meat, and a sherry-sweetened seafood cream broth. We cleaned our respective plates with much sharing and crumb-making! My dinner was the Chef's take on Paella. It was very interesting- adding capers, Kalamata olives, and artichoke hearts to the standard shrimp, clams, chicken, and Chorizo, served over tender rice. My wife's dish was the star of the show- she had the fish special: Chilean Sea Bass with a Sweet Thai chili sauce served over blah blah blah with a side of whazzawhoozit. I'm sorry- the fish was SOOOO good that I've forgotten what else was on her plate! Either way- the piece of fish was absolutely enormous and the sauce was just fabulous. I'm fairly certain there were a few shrimp gracing the plate as well, but again- THAT FISH! We were both so insanely full that we didn't even think about perusing the desert menu. I'm sure that whatever they may have had on offer was fabulous but we just couldn't eat another bite. The service was impeccable. The food was to die for (That FISH!!! That SOUP!) and even the ambiance was totally "island time!" Sunshine Cafe is now on our rotation for next year! I highly recommend stopping in for a bite if you have the opportunity! EDIT: as noted in another review- my wife ordered the Sea Bass "special." While we never saw the special on the menu (it was read off to us as we sat at the table) we were also NOT informed about the "Special surcharge." It was $22.00. Look- I'm not a cheapskate. I don't usually look too closely at the prices while we're out dining on vacation. I'm a ridiculous tipper. If the service was decent- I'll always give 20, 25, even 30%. NOT all that long ago, I gave a $100 tip on a $200 bill. BUT- backdoor and hidden charges make me wildly upset. The Sea Bass was amazingly good. But it was $70.00 instead of $48.00 thanks to the "special surcharge". I took 2 stars off for deceptive pricing. I WILL examine the next check very carefully. I do NOT include tax and surcharges on the amount that I tip on. This will be reflected in my next tip, as well. Grrrrr!

Outside of NYC, I wasn't exactly convinced Sanibel was about to serve up a killer pie. I was wrong. Because for these parts, it's tasty alright. Dante's has a unique layout with a winding staircase leading up to a circular dining area. We started with the jumbo shrimp appetizer, doused in this creamy, spicy, garlicky, Parmesany-packed sauce that was totally outstanding. Then we each ordered our own 10" individual pie.
