Having left my hometown Hasselt 50 years ago, I was ready to go back to my roots but needed a place…read moreto stay. I decided on Hemelhuys, a little gem tucked away on a pedestrian street, a stone-throw away from Hasselt's serene cathedral, St. Quintinus, and close to the town's fancy stores and great restaurants. This quaint, welcoming boutique hotel has eight spacious rooms combining modern-day comfort with old-fashioned charm. These tastefully renovated units are spread over two old stone houses connected by a small but lush garden. The short walk through this pretty garden is aptly names Chemin du Bonheur. Both owners, Ann and Liesbeth, blend discreet elegance with genuine small-town warmth, and go out of their way to make guests feel at home. And, just like the owners, the young staff is very attentive to the guests' needs and, in addition, smiles a lot -- a pleasant touch that augments one's enjoyment of the place. Breakfasts are most inviting: a selection of assorted fresh breads and bakery products, home-made jams, cheeses, fresh fruit and, for hungrier people, a variety of egg dishes. Location + charm + service + comfort + caring owners + friendly staff = compelling combination to embrace Hemelhuys, a delightful hotel of superb taste in a town that prides itself on being Hoofdstad van de Smaak (Capital of Good Taste). I will have to lie but I'd guess they serve about 400 different beers, mostly all Belgian. So if you want to try out some Belgian beers or just want to get drunk, and you are in the neighborhood this is the place to go. (Delirium, Kwak, Karmeliet,.. being my personal favorite ones) On the down side, the service sometimes can be sloppy and you will have to wait longer than at most pubs. But all these different beers are well worth the wait!

It was great experience for my colleague and I. My colleague wanted to get more in touch with…read moreLusitania cuisine, as his niece is going to have a destination wedding in Portugal this summer. However, I would not call this place as typical Portuguese food restaurant. It is as eclectic as fun is the name (a mosquito that can be found in the part of the river). The red hair tattooed owner was super friendly answering all my questions concerning the pictures in the walls. I was curious to see if they were real ancestors or she just got those photos online to create faux family ambiance. It happens that they were real family, now overseeing what we eat from those black and white shots! This restaurant is very relaxing and calm, you can have a conversation and enjoy the food. Another thing is when you go to the bathroom and you clash with those eyes protruding the walls!!! they look so authentic. It was funscary! Food: my seafood plate was super delicious, nothing to complain about. The tomato based broth was really good. My colleague was not as happy with his meat as was more done than expected. We shared a creme brulee that was awesome too. It was a bummer that the bacalhau dish was not available. That is what I went for initially but i dont regret choosing that restaurant versus more typical Belgian options around.

This is a wine and food bar owned by the same owners as the adjacent restaurant "de goei goesting"…read more Went here with a group on Saturday night, started with a Pinot noire (Rully Rouge - 'La Chaume' - Domaine Claudie Jobard) to accompany the finger food (lightly spiced lamb skewers), the wine was fruity and fresh but maybe a bit too light for the lamb.. I would maybe recommend it with the iberico pork mini burger they serve, although I never had that combination. Then to follow this up I chose the tenderloin and fried potatoes stacked on top of rucola lettuce. We had a bottle of blended wine (La grande clotte - lussac St-Émilion) which paired well with the beef. Sadly even though the cuisine of the beef was asked upfront, they were all served medium.. And the dishes weren't warm enough in my opinion. In the end I topped it all off with a very tasty tiramisu. Unfortunately to my disappointment I did not find any dessert wine that went by glass on the menu. Everything is served more or less bite sized, and tapas like. But that's the point.. I liked the experience and since I love wine I could live in a place like this. But, I would get bored of the food rather quickly.. Not impressed by the diversity of their menu, and also I find it is more of a commercial standpoint that only few wines are served by glass, since they do have the ability to keep bottles stored on tap. The kitchen is open and when busy it is noticeable that the staff can't keep up with the food that is being ordered.. This makes the wait long. But hey, no time is ever lost when in the good company of wine. Besides all that and more than enough on the plus to make up for it.. Good job to the owners, this is truly a good addition to the restaurant business in city of Hasselt.
