There are a few decent dive bars in Freiburg, but I think this is the biggest. Normally kind of dirty, the service can be friendly, mediocre, or grumpy. A cook once yelled at me for reminding him that I'm lactose intolerant and didn't want the sour cream on my chili. The food is cheap and tastes okay, but eat at your own risk. And it won't come fast.
But I give this place 4 stars because it is what it is, and it does dive bar pretty well. They have a pretty big selection of beers, though unfortunately their cheap draft is the disgusting local Ganter urine brew. But they also have a beer of the month (updated about every 2 months, or whenever they feel like it) which can be good or mediocre, but usually interesting and often foreign. The music they play is often good, and you'll see some great live acts that you won't see anywhere else in Freiburg.
Overall, it can be a really fun place to hang out. Just don't come looking for a fancy cocktail bar or a gourmet restaurant and you won't be disappointed!
UPDATE March 5th 2011: I was here again last night for a party. Two items to add: first, they've renovated, fixed up, and cleaned the bathrooms, which was very much necessary. Before they were absolutely disgusting, the toilets were missing seats, there was no soap or paper towels, etc. This has all been fixed, and it's much appreciated at a bar where people do also eat.
Second, don't drink the Guinness here! They serve it in a Ganter glass and just pour it in. The current special beer is Murphy's which, interestingly, is served in the appropriate glass (a hint, Atlantik: serve the Guinness in Murphy's glasses!). But it's also poured wrong (straight in, rather than almost-full, letting it settle, then the last bit), it's served too warm, and I don't think they clean the tap lines so while the beer is pretty fresh, it has a weird taste to it as well. The other current special is Walliser Pils from the Valais region of Switzerland which tastes quite good. read more
