Since it's not always calm and sunny even in summer, they have a nice indoor area as well. Of course, rain or shine, if I am at a beach, I sit outside. The outdoor area is really nice. They have a cocktail shack playing good dance music as well as nice plastic sofas for you to enjoy the view. Since wind is a natural phenomenon at Dutch beaches, you get little blankets on the seats. The service is quick and simple. The menu is surprisingly loaded with vegetarian snacks as well as entrees. I didn't order a cocktail, but people looked pleased with their's. I really liked the nacho chips as they had a nice crust of cheese on top, although the guacamole was store brand silliness as was the salsa. On that note, I think the qualify of the snacks really wasn't anything to write about. The pesto for the bread was cheap and store brand. The garlic spread was way too artificial. But, hey, you get a great view and hopefully some good times at a beach. Good is just part of the equation.

It sits in full afternoon sun with an amazing view of the St. Bavo Church in the Grote Markt. It's about as centrum of Haarlem as it gets. The bar / restaurant is GROTE indeed (huge). It has two floors of tables and the bar is very sizable. The outdoor has a really nice terrace area, under cover and outside of the canopy. There is a beautiful green shrub that is majestic which acts as a nice divider. The service is quite good for such a large place. I can't call it "gezellig" but I'm sure it has it's moments depending on where you sit and who you are with. The food I've had there is quite good. Looks like a great place for huge parties or just a quick coffee on the terrace in the wonderful afternoon sunshine. Get the sun whenever you can here!

With suitcases it took us about 40 minutes to trundle up to the cafe, but luggage free or on the bike it's a much shorter journey. The cafe is tucked away on Nieuwerdammerdijk, just up from the church, in the midst of some lovely houses which, unlike the central part of the city, are all quite low in height (single or two floors max) It's been there over 100 years, and you certainly tell why. The service and the food were lovely (that apple cake!) and on a nice day you can sit outside in the sunshine down by the waterside. I'd imagine it's a good place to hunker down in less clement weather too, although it doesn't take too many to fill it. One of the highlights of my last trip to Amsterdam.

We struck up a conversation about life and relationships as if we were old friends, which was fun because it gave me insight to how real people in Amsterdam live. She also prepared us a hearty breakfast sandwich of egg, ham, cheese, and tomato on great bread. I was charmed to see a man and his son playing a game at the bar on a Sunday morning. If I lived in the neighborhood, I would be a regular.

Definitely a "locals" place because menu was all in Dutch but our server was so helpful it was no issue. Both of the people that worked there were always smiling so that was nice to see! So friendly! What he recommended to me was toast with some sort of lettuce or arugula and Burrata on top. It was so good! I also got the cappuccino. So good. They just make 'em better in Europe. My friend had their croissant, cheese, and hard boiled egg. She said it was good too. Had a cute vibe as well! Like a bar/coffee place/cafe. They had games in the corner you could get out to play as well. Super cute! I would definitely come back here!

Eggplant parmigiana was delicious. Beer selection was great, so was the staff. We left stuffed - no room for cheese cake, so we returned the next night for dessert. And the next day for lunch. Wish we had a place like this back at home!
