    My view at the bar
    Jacques I.

The oldest bar in Amsterdam and it's the best. We visited Cafe Chris, the oldest (bruin) bar in Amsterdam. Established 1624, it very much feels historic when you walk in, but doesn't at all feel stuffy. You're immediately welcomed by the friendliest owner/bartender and gang of frequent locals. We came here for a night cap, so took seats right at the bar, which is the best seat in the house. Actually, most everyone sits at the bar instead of the tables because the bartender and all the regulars like to socialize, even those visiting for the first time, including yours truly. You can't help but engage with the owner who introduces you to all the other customers who've found a second home here. Not only was our bartender social, friendly and funny, he was helpful in steering us, tourists to other places to visit in Amsterdam and telling us that the following night - we should watch the home soccer team play, which is what all the locals will be doing. If he hadn't told us that, we would've never known about the game (which turned out to be a fun way to spend the following night!). The space inside was very small, with dim lighting and wood furnishings everywhere. It's what you'd find in a bruin bar. Music played in the background with a Pandora app, where the owner asked us what we wanted to listen to/for any recommendations. Bring cash! No cards here, as the owner uses an old school cash register and literally writes down orders on a pad, adding up the total for your bill. Just like the setting, some things just don't change - and I like that about Cafe Chris. If in Amsterdam and in search of a bruin bar, Cafe Chris is a must. In fact, if you're gonna go to just one bruin bar, make it Cafe Chris. It's as Dutch as you can get with the friendliest owner/bartender and gang of local peeps. It felt like home.

Another brown cafe. I really can't get enough of these places. From the internet: "This brown bar opened its doors in 1624, which makes it the oldest cafe in De Jordaan. The story goes that the owner of this café, who was also in charge of building the Westerkerk around the corner, paid his workers in this cafe to make sure much of the money flowed back into his pockets... This is a brown bar as old school as it gets. A very kind older lady behind the bar who's seen it all... The coolest detail is their tiny little toilet, which was built in a closet so small that the water tank and flusher are both located outside the bathroom..." I loved this brown cafe. I stopped in to read (it was pretty dark though) and grab a beer (and a pour of Bols). The bartender, Nelle, is amazing. She was running the whole place alone. Lots of locals. Charming and fun.

The oldest bar in Amsterdam is a beautiful part of history, has amazing beer, amazing staff and definitely a wonderful place to go. Hang out, have 3-4 beers enjoy the pub, atmosphere and history!

If I lived in Amsterdam, this would be my spot. It's the perfect old school bar. Dark wood on the walls and just enough stools at the bar to be cozy with your neighbor. If you need a snack, this bar actually has an award (it's a gold ball/cup thing sitting amongst the bottles) get the Bitterballen. Comes with an adorable toothpaste like tube of mustard.

    Intimate and quant.

We have heard of Donnies, but have never been so thought this was a good opportunity to try it out. Food: Since we were looking for a light lunch we decided to share the large size of the Kapsalon Kip. The Kapsalon Kip has responsibly raised chicken, hot sauce, garlic sauce, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, jalapeños, cheese and wait for it...french fries! It's definitely big enough for two people and SO DELICIOUS! We kept saying "OMG, this is so good". Drinks: We ordered two ice teas and one beer. If you're a beer lover they have craft beers on their menu. Price: €19.35 Service: Service started out pretty slow when we arrived. No one came to us for 10 minutes and I went outside myself to get the menus off the tables there to see what to order. But once they realised we were there and took our order the service picked up. The waitress in the end was nice and friendly. Ambiance: It was pretty quiet on the Saturday afternoon we were there. The space is very nice and well done. Definitely the nicest doner kabab house I've ever been to. Would I go back? ABSOLUTELY! I'm looking forward to trying other things on their menu.

The bartenders were busy but nice and took care to explain the creative and extensive menu. The second time I came I made a reservation for two online. You pay for the reservation but that amount is then applied to your check. The drinks are quite good and I understand the need for the reservation. It's not a big space but it's very popular so it's consistently full. This is a great bar so I can see why it's so popular. Don't miss Flying Dutchmen Cocktails in Amsterdam.

He said water, so I assumed it was it was tinted from the lighting. When I took a sip it was a flavored water. I asked if it was gluten-free and he was very rude in his response. Basically was like um yea it just has spices in it. Spices may not be gluten free and could be of concern for a celiac. I asked him if any drinks were gluten free and he said all but 2. I wasn't confident that the drinks would be made separately from the non- gluten drinks so I opted not to get one. My friend got the bees knees and said it was really tasty. The server did come back and switch my water to regular at the end but he should have been upfront with what he gave to prevent any exposure to peoples allergies.
