Cactus Flower is a really superb little gift shop, small but loaded with all sorts of unique gifts, smaller furnishings and decorator items. It also has one of the best candle selections around, particularly if you happened to have ended up like me with European candle holders wherein the base of the holders are in metric. Cactus Flower is an owner/operator establishment and as such shows in the friendliness, politeness, attention to detail and courtesy given its customers.

Last weekend was Art Basel in Miami to which I scored myself a press pass and entry into some…read morewicked awesome events; so naturally, I came to Fort Lauderdale to attend an aromatherapy mixing session at Tree of India on Friday night. I know I know, might as well change my name to Sara "I'm a stupid hoe" M. But really, I would not have traded my time here for any over-hyped Basel event! Tree of India is a quaint little shop nestled behind the Gateway shopping center which I probably would have never found if it weren't for the nifty groupon I bought for an aromatherapy mixing party. Groupons, I have found to be predictably hit or miss; when they're good, they're great.. and if they are bad, well they make you wish you spent that +/- 20 bucks on a jumbo pack of ziploc bags. Fortunately, my groupon and my time at Tree of India were both stupendous. The owner, Jessica, is really knowledgeable about her craft as well as being very warm and welcoming. She had all the ladies there for the class sit on pillows in a circle as we sipped on our kava cocktails and listened as she explained to as all there is to know (or all that could fit into a 90 min time frame) about essential oils and aromatherapy. She really did a good job of relaying the information in a way that was not the least bit boring or classroom-like, instead she told stories and got all the ladies involved, and it was really very interesting and fun. Once everyone in the group had the basics down, we were given a dark amber glass bottle with a misting sprayer which was filled with distilled water. From there, everyone got to head over the mixing bar, where all the essential oils were set out for us to smell and plan out a mixture of 30 drops. Each oil has special properties which create different responses, such as clary sage which brings about a smile on your face with just one sniff due to its qualities of being an anti-depressant, confidence booster and builder of mental strength. Yes, all this from just smelling it! I had a really great time creating my own signature mist based on the scents of the oils and their benefits. My mixture came out great and I have used it every day since making it. This event was great, I had fun all while learning something new! The experience was very eye-opening and I will definitely be back to get some of the mixtures sold for headache remedies and immunity boosters. Tree of India is a really cool place and if you can make it to one of the mixing events, it's a fun and different way to spend a night.

Once lured inside, I could see that the store is small yet well organized and pleasing to the eye. After browsing for a few minutes, I noticed most of the products were predominately yoga supplies, active clothing, aromatherapy and incense supplies(exp. smudge feathers). The minute I saw essential and massage oils my interest was squarely locked unto them, so I inquired owner about the oils. The owner named Jessica, informed me that the she makes all of the sprays, massage oils, and essential oils on premises. That was excellent news to my ears, as I do regularly buy essential and massage oils from WholePayCheck( Whole Foods) and would prefer to support local small business. After glancing over her products that intrigued me for a few more minutes, I chose to buy one red cedar essential oil bottle, a cedar incense wand( for my weekly smudging) and three packs of my all time favorite hard to find Japanese Shoyeido incense. I am definitely going to be a regular shopper here. I also found out that Jessica teaches private yoga classes, I believe she also does group yoga classes to, but I am not sure.

Miami has a good smattering of botanicas for those brave enough to enter into the mysteries of Caribbean voodoo and hoodoo but a good religious store catering to Catholic Christian needs is not an easy find in Broward. I am delighted to discover Moroney's which has quite a large collection of statuary, rosaries, books and paraphernalia for opening your own Church (think clerical vestments, large altar statuary, gold chalices and the like). I've been twice and liked the service but still feel they could offer more for home use in terms of small and inexpensive statuary - but as they are the only game in town that's close to work - I will be back!

When I pulled up their front porch was filled with the most delightful array of gifts. I started out Christmas shopping but there were so many things I wanted for myself too. I ended up purchasing several items at a steep discount including a Vera Bradley straw hat for only $5, gorgeous artisan necklaces for family Christmas presents, some Christmas decorations, a gift for a friends upcoming wedding, and finally a few Cat's Meow Village buildings including area landmark buildings, the New River Inn and the Bonnet House, for my collection. I started accidentally collecting them when I purchased a few inexpensively in a vintage sale and now I'm hooked. I especially love the replicas of the buildings I have fallen in love with in Florida (in case you are reading this daughter hint, hint). Inside the store I was dazzled with the array of gifts. The front of the store was beautifully decorated for the holidays and there were several Christmas trees throughout the store. This store carries a huge selection of Vera Bradley, home decor, coastal decor, holiday decorations, jewelry, candles, bath products, pantry items, jams and jellies, and apparel. I loved the lighted holiday snow globes especially the pop up camper one but my all time favorite items were the Spartina Florida purses and wallets. They have a vintage Florida map on them that look like the one on the table clothes that people who visited Florida used to buy in the 50's as souvenirs. I am still hunting one of those table clothes and I adore these handbags. I had never seen these before I am in love. They are pricey so this is going on my someday wish list. If there is one downside to this store it's that there was only one register and the sale generated a lot of customers who were buying many items and the ladies were slow. They are so sweet though and the wait wouldn't have been a big deal if I didn't have to rush off to other appointments. While I waited I snacked on their complimentary doughnut holes and orange juice. I have definitely found my new favorite gift store. I have some difficult people to buy for and I can find something for anyone here, not to mention all the things I personally loved. With the gift giving holiday season upon us, this is the perfect time to discover this store.

Some of my favorite items were the Scout bags, coastal Christmas ornaments, Audubon bird notecards, and sea turtle bracelets, You could pretty much buy me anything in here and I would be happy. My favorite part of the store was the owners dogs! They are the cutest store security I have ever seen. When you enter the store hit the ring button so they can buzz you in so the dogs don't accidentally slip out. The owner was super nice and let me know he was available to help but left me to shop at will. I have been to a lot of gift stores but this is my favorite. Usually, those are things I receive as gifts, so I don't often find myself shopping there for myself. I already have quite a few of their hand soaps, so this time I wandered over to the smaller travel-size items and found the cutest mini hand sanitizer holder. I paired it with the lemon-scented hand sanitizer, and it is the perfect combination! The mini hand sanitizers are around $2, although some are a little more depending on the size and bottle style. The little holder was $10, which initially felt a little pricey for such a small item. But I actually love the style of it, and for me, that made it worth buying. If I had only kind of liked it, I probably would have left it behind! I especially love having it on my gym bag. It keeps my hand sanitizer easily accessible so I don't have to dig through my bag looking for it when I want clean hands. Such a cute little find, and definitely something I'll get a lot of use out of!

The front wall and roof of the store screamed Candy Candy Candy by it's vibrantly colorful lollipops, gum drops and taffy decor. This was going to be a quick stop since parking on Wilton Drive is limited and notorious for citations by the aggressive meter maid. Based on my concern, the sole employee advised that a few free parking spaces in the rear are available for a strict maximum of fifteen minutes, which is a kind offering. The inside was much larger than the front view of the building reflects. The giant yellow Haribo bear stood proudly by the front door with bags of sour gummies hanging from it's chest. For chocolate enthusiasts, there was an entire section dedicated to fresh chocolate treats. At a quick glance, it was evident that a large amount of the candies were old school big brands. Aside from candies, there were novelty gifts which include coffee mugs with celebrity, pride rainbow and 80's TV shows like Seinfeld, Peanuts or Laverne and Shirley prints. Hundreds of hanging decorative ornaments fill the ceiling but unsure if those are for sale. Very cool candy store with alot of originality and snug parking.
