Cabela's the company has everything the hunter or fisherman needs ("wants" is another story). And I hesitate to say this because my friends will think I've lost it but every time I visit this actual store I'm left feeling kind of empty. Now I like Cabela's products, I like their selection, and I get excited when the new catalog's arrived- I even ranked high enough as a customer to get the hardbound master catalog last year. So I AM a Cabela's guy, despite the ethical issue I have with these giant stores squashing the little independent gear dealers... My problem is that their website is so well organized, and it's so easy to shop from, I have little reason to visit the actual store. The staff is very good, so that's a plus. And you can try things on in the actual store, so if you're a tough size you'll be happy to visit here. I'm not, so internet shopping's easy for me... When in the area I want to stop in here to be oooed and awed by the huge selection of stuff. But often, the one specialty thing I actually need or want they're out of stock on! Last trip I left without buying anything! And the bargain cave in the back of the store is tough to like. I guess if you go there everyday and catch the good stuff when it hits the cave you can score. But whenever I go I'm amazed at the huge price they ask for the leftover/used stuff. I mean used sneakers need to be pretty cheap- who ends up paying these prices for returned stinky shoes? So I guess as a long distant visitor, the store leaves me wanting more, and I'm often more rewarded finding the smaller specialty fishing/hunting places in terms of "destination" store experiences. If you need an extra box of shells or some flys or whatever in a pinch, I suppose it's really nice to have this place in the area, but I personally usually plan ahead and pack plenty anyway. OK, their gun selection is really nice, but in that regard I already have what I need, and can't afford what I want! read more

Not that great ! They never have stuff out on the floor like the website says and the service is so bad none them even know when or if they will get more ! They have way too high of mark up compared to buying some where else ! I would just shop online and skip them. read more

I visited this location this past weekend for the first time. I travel a lot for work and I enjoy going to Cabela's stores whenever there's one near me. This store is really nice and has a very strong fishing focus. They carry live bait from minnows to worms. They have plenty of rods and reels and all of the traditional artificial lures. They have a huge Rapala selection. The guns and ammo section is smaller than most Cabela's locations, but a lot of customers were checking out the guns this particular day. It is a busy store this time of year because of the outdoors tourist crowd who comes to this area of Wisconsin and Iowa. It's just noticeably a smaller store than most Cabela's. I loved the store but I gave it four stars (instead of five stars) because the firearms and ammo area appeared to be a lot smaller than most Cabela's. read more

This chain store only gets 3 stars from me. It's to big for one thing with lots of overhead expenses therefore the prices here are much higher than you would find in a smaller local gun/sport shop. The only reason I even go here is to get some of that great sugar free praline maple syrup yummmmy. Also the elk summer sausage is excellent. Being as big as they are there is a very large selection of everything. Actually Cabela's is about the same as walking into a Pro Bass sport shop like they have in California. Boring!! read more

We took the trip to Cabelas as a detour to show our grandchildren all the wild animals and fish on display! Of course, there is more for everyone! We were a party of 7 ! It was a nice and sunny day. Had snow patches still on the ground, but business was as usual! That display of the running elks is more impressive if you stay right in front ot it! A paradise for outdoors people! read more

I admit...I am a Cabela's junkie. Have been one since the mid-1970's. I have visited over 10 different Cabela's stores in different states. I have been to the Prairie du chien store twice. It's a decent store but is not one of the full-size stores so the merchandise is more limited. It also does not have a restaurant/grill that most of the larger stores have. They sell live bait which is a bonus for the store. I really dislike how cheaper Bass Pro merchandise is taking over the store since the buyout. If I want the cheap quality hunting and camping gear that BPS sells I will go to a BPS store! read more

Spent over half an hour searching for a camping item I was told is on a rack. Finally collared an employee who spent 15 more minutes searching, unsuccessfully. Then he ordered one from a back room and sent me to store pickup. Then I waited another 15 minutes for service only to observe a woman who walked in 10 minutes after me receive service ahead of me because she, apparently, knew someone there. At that point I put down the things I intended to purchase and left this sorry store behind. I received a camo hunting jacket that was the wrong size. I checked with 3 different stores to find my size. The 3rd store I called was in Prairie Du Chein. I talked with Paula Johnson. They had 1 jacket in my size. The only problem was, that I live almost 4 hours away from that store. Paula said she would see what she could do to get this jacket closer to me. They have great service in the firearms department. My advice to any gun seller is not to sell here. I brought in three guns for sale and was truly lowballed. They gave me prices on all three guns. I told them that due to the prices I only wanted to sell one of the guns. The sales associates then went to the estimator, and they rescinded the offer on the gun I wanted to sell! The reason they gave was that the barrel was too short to sell legally. This was complete baloney because the gun came to me straight from the factory and is sold in that configuration regularly. What happened, in my estimation is that if they couldn't have the two other guns in the deal, they were either pressuring me to sell all three. In a professional atmosphere like that you don't offer a price to buy and then reneged on the offer. They certainly would have taken all three guns if I had sold them together. Very shady for an outfit like Cabelas. read more

I've stopped at cabela's stores all across the nation, but this was the most disappointing one I've been in. No gun library, fly tying material selection is almost non-existent, bargain cave is tiny. I'm a big cabelas fan, but there are better options out there than the prairie du chein location. read more

I had a bad experience at Cabela's in Prairie du Chien Wisconsin yesterday, July 7th. I wanted to purchase a concealed carry pocket holster for my Glock 27 pistol. I have a Wisconsin and a Minnesota concealed carry permit and I carry often. Knowing that some people get nervous when other people walk into a building with a gun, I fully unloaded the Glock, removed the magazine and placed it in a case before walking in the door. I was met by a clerk who asked me if I had a firearm in the case. I said yes, but it was unloaded. She asked me several other questions, such as "Is the firearm unloaded" even though I had just told her that the pistol was unloaded. She also asked "Is the firearm jammed?". She also required me to give her my name and phone number. Finally, she placed a plastic guard in the breach and a trigger lock on the trigger. Then she told me that another employee would have to come and take my pistol to the rear of the store. At that point, if I wanted to check out how a holster fit my gun, I could ask for my pistol to be returned to me. The point is that my pistol was confiscated and placed in a back room with the door shut. Had I walked in with the firearm concealed, I would have not had this hassle, but approaching them honestly bought me a truckload of frustration. When I buy a holster, there are a few things I check. Does the holster fit the pistol? Does the holster and the pistol fit my pocket? Can I draw the pistol from the holster with relative ease? I could not answer one of these questions after Cabela's confiscated my pistol. I could examine a holster and how it fit my pistol only under the direct "supervision" of one of their clerks. You cannot holster a pistol with a walnut-sized trigger guard affixed, so the clerk would have to retrieve your firearm and unlock the trigger in order for you to check the function of the holster. I don't know what is going on with Cabela's, but for all practical purposes, they appear to be anti-gun. I was treated as if I was untrustworthy or irresponsible and they made the buying experience all but impossible. Once again, my firearm was unloaded, without a magazine and in a case at the time of this incident. I now fully realize why people tend to buy gun-related items on line or at a small gun store. This big-box experience was a total turn off. Stay away from Cabela's unless you don't mind having your firearm confiscated. read more

I checked on line first on the store's business hours, stated 9-9pm. Drove over an hour and got there a few minutes to 8 only to be told they were closed. Store hours were 9-8pm. I told the "guard" at the front we had checked the web site, he just said no one keeps the site up-to-date, that we should call the store. Why should I call the store? I wish I could give them 0 stars. We bought a boat from them back in June and we are still awaiting the title and registration for the boat 3 months later. We have had to call many, many times and have gotten no-where with them. We paid extra to have them complete all the paperwork and it is still not done. Come to find out, they never had the title from the boat from the previous owner and therefore, it can't be registered and transferred to us yet. What a joke! read more

I really am surprised with the last couple of reviews that were given on this store. Don't listen to em. I live in Cedar Falls, IA and anyone who plans on doing any real outdoor shopping here will more than likely head to this store above all others. The reason, The Distribution Center or DC. Heck it is better to think of this as a Distribution Center with a store attached. Of all of the Cabela's that one can go to in this area this one by far has the biggest selection. The only problem being that you need to have the item numbers that you are heading in for on hand to give the nice clerks at the back desk. Give them about 15 minutes to fetch the items from the DC and all you need to do after that is head up to the checkouts. Now I will admit that the new Bass Pro store in Des Moines, IA is tempting but it is limited to only what it has on hand. Same situation with the Cabela's in Owatonna, Minn. If your willing to jot down some part numbers from the website, catalog or print them off and then head to the store you will be greatly pleased with this store. If you do that then you can look at the rest of the store as one giant add on sales store, to be looked over or just ignored. I will admit I do wish they would update the interior of it.
