Christmas shopping with the family at Cabela's. Great flannel shirts. Really nice boat cover. Great fishing gear and bag. Nice blankets.

If Louisiana is considered the Sportsman's Paradise, then Cabela's should be the official store of choice for outdoor activities, as they seem to carry everything under the sun. As soon as you enter the parking lot, you kind of get an idea as to just how massive this place is. When you walk through the front door for the very first time, I guarantee you'll experience some sort of sensory overload; and I mean this in a very good way. Your eyes are immediately drawn to the back of the store where there is a humongous North American big game display that looks like a rocky outcrop which features stuffed animals that would rival any museum. Above and behind the display is a suspended airplane (Piper Cub perhaps) that makes the scene look lifelike. There is a huge glass enclosed gun display that is manned by several sales representatives that are happy to show you anything. They have everything from derringers to .500 Smith & Wesson magnums. If you are looking for a pocket pistol, they'll even let you place the gun in your pocket to see how it feels/ and or imprints. The sales reps are very friendly and very regimented in their handling of the weapons, especially ensuring that the weapon is unloaded and the slide is locked back before they hand it to you. I also like the large "Gun Library" as they feature many used firearms and historical pieces too. If you are an outdoors-man, then you need to check this place out. However, if you are outdoors-man, you probably already have.

I tried y'all, I really did. I wanted to hate this (guy) place but it's impossible. This place has something for everyone and that was apparent to me as soon as I was walking in. Hello pastel colored canoes...way to appeal to the females Cabela's. Yes, there are knives and guns galore here and of course I was made to endure these by my guy BUT there's also: -cute baby clothes -cuter women's clothes -aquariums!! -awesome home decor -stuffed animals beaucoup We spent hours wandering around here taking in the two stories of awesomeness. There's a place to grab lunch on the second floor and a pretty great fudge shop up there as well. (I recommend the snickers fudge) Oh and in the fudge shop don't miss out on the large selection of Burt's Bees products. If your guy makes you come here you might just like it as much as he does.

Nice and relaxing atmosphere. Didn't find anything that I couldn't live without but enjoyed the peaceful tire kicking walk around.

This store is a outdoorsman's dream. They have everything you would want or need to go Camping, fishing, hunting, and boating. The prices are a bit higher than most sporting good stores. The interior is amazing with life size deer, moose, and various other animals adorning the store. Upstairs is a good grill restaurant and a small country store type shop with fudge and sweets. There is a really neat aquarium with huge indigenous fish and turtles. It's great for kids. I would recommend stopping in just to experience the sights in the store.

Cabela's is not a destination like Bass Pro. Save your time and money. I have never visited a Cabela's before. I checked out their website and it looked like they had a restaurant on premise like Bass Pro. Not so. It's more like an overpriced concession stand from the Superdome. Frozen and prepackaged food is their specialty here. My family ended up going elsewhere to eat. I found that their prices were too high on most of the items I was looking for. Ending up leaving without buying anything. I actually took pictures of the items I wanted and found them cheaper online at Bass Pro and Amazon. The clothing area offered a large selection. I can't comment on the pricing on the clothing since I didn't come here looking for that. All in all, I was pretty disappointed in Cabela's. I don't plan to come back here anytime soon unless they have a product that I can't find anywhere else.

The ceiling has Spanish Moss hanging from it, making you feel like you're under the canopy of soaring trees in a swamp. At Christmastime, there's a huge tree and cheerful employees at the entrance welcoming you in. You really can't hate it here as much as you try. It's a one stop shop for those with masculine urges (killing things, being one with the elements, grilling dead things)--it's unapologetically so. And this vegan city slicker is definitely not their target audience but I like to have an open mind and I do appreciate the fact that you can find many many practical things here. I'm just not the most practical person. For example, I bought my boat here (2017 Tahoe 1950). Do I even know how to drive the thing? No. But my husband drives me around in it. I hate driving. I like boats. And I can handle nature in small doses (preferably not on triple digit high humidity days). And until you have floated or zipped around these glorious Louisiana waterways, you can't tell me that you are allergic to nature! I recognize a quality store when I see one, even if walking through 20 aisles of bait will never ever be my thing.

I've been looking for a roof rack loader for my Pescador Perception so, since Thule and Yakima accessories are pretty much interchangeable, I Google search Thule and Yakima dealers in the area. Two popped up and The Backpacker was one of them. It's a dreary rainy day and lunch time. I managed to find the shop in spite of the lunch traffic on Jefferson Hwy. I parked and walked inside. I was immediately received with a friendly greeting by several of the staff with offers to help me. I told them I was "just looking around" and they left me to myself with me knowing if I needed any help they'd be there. I like that. I wandered around for about 30 minutes and I managed to find a few things. Some I needed and some I didn't know I needed. So, I carried my bounty to the register and was checking out. I asked the young man if they had a THule or Yakima kayak loader. He replied, " We don't have any T-hule loaders or Yakima loaders in stock." I always find it amusing when the folks in the outfitting shops do that. I'm not "Sveedish" so I'll continue to say "THule" LOL. In all seriousness, the shop is very comfortable and friendly. The staff are extremely helpful and not overbearing/pushy. I travel to BR often on business and I'll continue to stop by "The Backpacker" to find things I didn't know I needed. I'm convinced that if they don't have it, you don't really need it.
