I have nothing negative to say about this place. Love the location, the show choices, and the prices. Sure it's a lite cramped and could be cheaper, but it's good entertainment in a downtown city. Was the best part of my Toronto adventure! Saw Cannibal! The musical :)

"We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine." The theater layout is well designed with basically no obscured views. Very clean and well maintained despite it's age, a beautiful and classic venue going back in time over 33 years, oh the stories it must have. Plenty of staff to guide and assist you to your assigned seats. Drinks/bar setup on each floor lobby for those who drink on every occasion. The sound and lighting system perfectly complimented each show I sat in the upper level for Lion King and the mid level for Ones, both levels with perfect views of the main stage with clear sound. Protip- take the side exit after the play is over, a lot quicker than going out the main exit where you entered the thester

Also, I have read the book and movie adaptation many years ago so I didn't remember much. The Outsiders was amazing. It was pretty similar to the book and movie but there were some changes. The music and songs (mainly the group ones) seem have a similar volume to concerts. The lines (non music parts) were understandable. In terms of seating, I would pick the elevated levels (dress or balcony) compared to the (back) orchestra. Entering was straight forward. They don't really check bags. They may check larger bags like backpacks. You can bring and fill empty clear plastic water bottle at the bar (on the 2nd floor). Drinks, snacks and popcorn are your typical staples and are priced similar to other venues.

We caught several broadway shows at this vast venue, including Peter Pan. We were impressed by the aerial lifts, dynamic backdrop and the swift Tinker Bell glow. The modern special effects of the show are a neat contrast to the 1920s architectural styles and decor of the historic building. The theatre has been kept in pristine condition, and the seats are comfortable. The foyer can hold a packed crowd during intermission, and features a grand staircase & concessions. Note the current theatre name is CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre but be careful not to mix this up with Mirvish's other CAA Theatre that is 20 minutes walk north. Glad we made it ahead of showtime in spite of this!

As someone from out of town who enjoys theatre, I visit Toronto often to see relatives, and when I…read moredo, I always look to see what Mirvish productions are showing downtown. For some reason, I always seem to be drawn to the Royal Alexandra Theatre as four different productions I have seen in the last few years have all been there. From the physical layout of the theatre to the customer service of the staff, I have enjoyed my all around experience during each visit. I have been to the theatre with colleagues during a conference, with my sister, and with other family members over the last several years. I have sat in the balcony, front couple of rows, and further back in orchestra before, and every seat seems to be good. I often take advantage of the American Express reserved seat program to purchase a great seat not too far in advance once I have details of my travels. I have been completely satisfied with my experiences at the shows there! The Royal Alexandra Theatre is a Canadian historic landmark as the oldest continuously operating legitimate theatre in North America and the continent's first truly "royal" theatre, granted official letters patent by Edward VII entitling it to the royal designation, along with his permission to name it after his consort, Alexandra. It was built in 1907 and was Toronto's first steel-framed structure, one of the first air-conditioned buildings in the continent, and the first theatre to be considered fireproof. The Royal Alexandra Theatre is one of four theatres that is run by Mirvish. The facility is mask-friendly but by no means required. There are concessions and a coat check. It is generally accepted to arrive approximately 30 minutes before a show. If you arrive late, you may need to wait until an appropriate break in the show for you to go to your seat and not disturb other patrons. Mirvish Productions is Canada's largest commercial theatre production company. You can learn more about Mirvish and this theatre at https://www.mirvish.com. After all, it was Ed Mirvish who in 1963 purchased and saved the Royal Alexandra Theatre from demolition. I certainly recommend a Mirvish show in the Royal Alexandra Theatre for someone who enjoys theatre!

We arrived about half an hour early after stopping at Lake Effect for scoops. Who needs dinner and a show when tummy ice cream is involved? The theater also sells snacks as food and drinks from the outside are banned. We were greeted outside by a dapper gentleman who held the door for us to get into the lobby. Unlike other theaters, there was elbow room to have them check out printed tickets and make conversation about the show. Others had digital tickets that seemed to work as well. We popped into the loo, which thankfully had multiple stalls, hardly any wait and was fully stocked with soap and towels. There were people selling souvenir toys and raffle tickets that we bypassed to find our seats. The playbill girl gave us a rough estimate of where we would be located. Thankfully everything is clearly labeled as to not get lost. For a mere 40 each, after fees, we were five rows back, centered. The view was clear, the sound was clear and the leg room- my gosh. For the first time in a long time a theater had room for me to stretch my legs a bit instead of cramming in more seats. The view is historically gorgeous in architecture and paint. Though we were there to experience the show, not just a building. The show started on time, held a brief intermission and concluded in about two hours. During that time, we got wowed by talented singers, very acrobatic dancers and mostly talented actors. (There was one that we would have probably chosen a different person to portray the roll, but I'm not going to crush a child's dreams when they did adequately. And others filled their rolls amazingly so I'm chalking it up to personal preference.) The costumes are well constructed without being extravagant. Tiny shorts cover any areas that would make this child friendly show receive an R rating. At the end, after all the standing ovations, we were able to exit with ease and get back to the car, parked at no cost in a nearby lot. Beat that Buffalo parking. Extra shout-out to whoever put the dual drummers in the loge to let us see the masterminds at work. They were the heartbeat of the show for me!

One of five venues used to showcase films during the festival, this large single-screen venue showcased some of the gala premieres with an approximate capacity of 1,700+ assigned seating. Prior to its opening in 1982, this concert hall was formerly known as the New Massey Hall before officially being named Roy Thomson Hall with a generous donation by the family (founder of the publishing empire Thomson Corporation) towards the construction efforts. With a noted seating capacity of 2,630, this multi-purpose venue was home to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (it featured a pipe organ), annually used by the Toronto International Film Festival, and various other events. Designed by Canadian architects Arthur Erickson and Mathers and Haldenby, its circular architectural design exhibited a sloping and curvilinear exterior. Was this performance hall a good option to screen films!? PURCHASE(S) Regular Screening - "Two Pianos" ($29.00CAD): The world premiere of this French ("Deux Pianos") film with English subtitles, the story followed the career of Mathias (François Civil), a virtuoso French pianist who lived in Asia for many years and returned to his hometown of Lyon to experience an impossible love story. As fine as I'm sure the picture was, I felt my long day of brewery crawling, minimal food, and the later time of this screening didn't help with my enjoyment. The story was intriguing, but the pace was very slow, the dialog was methodical, and the subtitles started to wane on me. And, the cast and some crew did a Q&A after the movie. Buttered Popcorn Regular Bag ($9.75CAD): Ravenous for something to eat, the addictive aroma of freshly-popped kernels and hot melting butter sucked me in. Plus, no movie experience was complete without popcorn and candy (I had no candy...). Armed with only one size to sell, I devoured this early in the film. 2pc La Petite Bretonne Chocolate Oat Cookies ($3.50CAD): An odd choice, but a good one nonetheless. Two soft-batch cookies that broke apart easily and dissolved in your mouth, I wished I had some hot tea to go along with these. SERVICE All of this was based during the Toronto International Film Festival and not solely on the general on-hand staff. The online ticket sales were a breeze once you found a film that wasn't sold out. The "Rush Line" sales were quick once tickets were released, and every human being I dealt with from festival staffers/volunteers, ushers, to the concessions was nearly seamless - thank you! PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance): I was constantly in the area all day throughout the Toronto International Film Festival, so I simply walked. Otherwise, there were spots along the many main and surrounding streets, some nearby structures, numerous public transportation options, and rideshares - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE From the outside to the inside, this rotund facility was beautiful, the seats were cushy (no cup holders nor reclining seats), very good sound system, and auditorium seating so no one blocked your view. However, the Balcony Left seat I had wasn't the best viewing because of the angle and height. There were several pocket concession stands throughout, some bars for libations, in addition to a decent-sized lounging area. There were low-incline stairs which were easy to climb. Plenty of natural lighting came through the large surrounding windows while electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There weren't any TVs nor any background music, but there was plenty of chatter all around. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Roy Thomson Hall was a gorgeous facility, any live performances would be a treat to see here, but there were some areas such as the balcony left and right sections that made it a bit difficult to fully enjoy a film. Otherwise, everything ran smoothly enough, there weren't any real hassles, the concession prices were standard albeit a limited selection of offerings to eat while the ticket prices were elevated as was the norm for a film festival. The customer service was easy, friendly, and straightforward. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $44.00CAD BEFORE any discounts/tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS
