This is BY FAR the BEST judo club in the Orange County area. Although I live in Riverside, I…read moretravel to OC, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach during tournament season for BJJ training, but the Nori Bunasawa Judo Club is my home for competition Judo training. Bunasaw Kai is EXTREMELY friendly to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu players looking to work on their stand-up judo game. Interested in training with legit BJJ history? Nori Bunasawa was a direct training partner and student of Kimura. yes, THAT Kimura! Players in the club include multiple IJF Judo Masters World Championship champions and medalists and too many National titles in Judo and BJJ to count. Nori Bunasawa himself is an All Japan Champion as well as a previous coach to the USA World Judo team. This is a friendly and effective place to train on your judo and BJJ stand up game! Bunasawi Kai work outs are at the Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple. The entrance to the Judo club is in the rear of the building.

We tried several other trial classes before, but I can confidently say that Triunfo is the best MMA/jiu-jitsu gym for both adults and kids. Every instructor is incredibly patient, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping each child thrive. You can tell they truly care. The drills, structure, and sparring are thoughtfully done and really help build confidence, discipline, and focus in a fun and safe way. A special thank you to Chelsea for welcoming my son with open arms from day one it honestly makes me emotional thinking about how supported he has felt here. The entire staff has been so patient with him, encouraging him, guiding him, and teaching him all the "bad-ass" moves he loves while still keeping everything age-appropriate and positive. I truly cannot recommend a better dojo than this. If you're looking for a place that will take amazing care of your child and help them grow not just physically, but emotionally too this is it , super structured . love - KN family

I told him about needing personal training and he was the nicest person to me. He answered all my questions and made me feel at home, unfortunately, I moved to HB and haven't found really anytime to go check out the gym. Hands down the best decision we've made for our daughter…read more Our daughter has been attending Gracie Barra Costa Mesa for a year now and the growth we've witnessed in her both on and off the mats has been incredible. The level of instruction here is unmatched. Every coach brings not just technique and discipline but heart and intention to every class. They see each student's potential and push them to rise to it. She has advanced so much thanks to their dedication and more importantly she's gained confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging that carries into every area of her life. Jiu jitsu is more than a martial art. It is a way of life. It teaches humility, patience, manners, self-control, and problem-solving. Even at her young age, we've seen her carry herself with more focus, awareness, and kindness. She is stronger physically and mentally because of it. The studio is clean and welcoming with an energy that makes you want to stay. They offer Kangan water which is a huge bonus. There's always plenty of parking and the community here is full of amazing people who genuinely support one another. The vibes are just different--uplifting, positive, and empowering. Gracie Barra Costa Mesa isn't just a place to train. It is a place to grow. Whether you're looking for a powerful way to build confidence in your child or you're an adult wanting to challenge yourself in a life changing way, this is the spot. I couldn't recommend it more.

Professor Elon leads with exceptional technical knowledge, patience, and professionalism. He has a unique way of breaking down complex techniques so students at all levels -- from white belt to black -- can truly understand and apply them. The energy on the mats is focused yet welcoming. Every class challenges you to get better, but the environment remains positive, respectful, and supportive. The team embodies the true Gracie Barra values of discipline, integrity, and community. The facility itself is spotless, well-organized, and clearly run with pride. Whether you're looking to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense, improve fitness, or join a Costa Mesa BJJ family, this academy delivers. Professor Elon's leadership and attention to detail make all the difference -- he pushes you to grow technically, mentally, and physically every single class. #GracieBarra #CostaMesa #JiuJitsu #BJJ #BrazilianJiuJitsu #ProfessorElon #MartialArts #SelfDefense #OCFitness #Discipline #Community

Charles H's review is baseless and without merit…read more If your judgement of a dojo is based on changing rooms and high-quality wood floors, the nearest 24 Hour fitness would prove to be worthy of your praise. CMKD is not a for-profit organization with the financial means to provide "quality private club" type of atmosphere for casual participants to come by to be "wowed". The dojo has a long history of volunteer effort that goes back decades. The "torn up floor" was salvaged by hand when the building was a racquet ball court back in the 80s. Many of us used our bare hands to pull out the nails that were nailed into the wood planks. By the end of the effort, our hands were blistered, splintered, and all cut-up. The wood-flooring was salvaged because the church didn't have the money to buy new wood floors at the time they were organizing. There are sensei that were just young kids at the time they helped salvage the wood floor. And today, their calloused feet practice on them and teach others with gratitude that the dojo found a home in the church for as long as it has. There was a time when the dojo had rented space with deteriorating wood parquet floors that would splinter and injure the kenshi. Despite the poor floor, the dojo's membership survived and thrived, which is a testament to the true value of the dojo -- its teachers, members, and family -- the people, not the physical building itself. As for mentorship -- mentorship is not an automatic entitlement because a member is "new". Mentorship is a gift that is earned through respectful diligence and dedication to Kendo, and to the volunteers that spend their own resources and time to cultivate sincere kenshi who are willing to put in the time to teach themselves. I speak for many of us when I say that if we could get back our deceased sensei with the payment of a lifetime of practice on splintering wood floors and with no proper room to change in, we would gladly do it.

Summary: If you're looking for a practice that's consistent, low-demand on competition but has…read morecompetitive people, is a good workout and has high ranking sensei that can push you if you want to be pushed then CMKD is good. The Practice: "Habitual" Something great for your kendo development is that you always know what you're going to do at the dojo. Warm-up, basics, open sparring. This simple routine emphasizes fundamental practice and there's never any confusion or down time. It's regimented so that you make the most of your practice time. The Development: "Clean" Among the kids, their kendo becomes quite beautiful here as kendo is an art. Competition isn't something forced, but practiced for recreational purposes but some members do well beyond that level. Many of the adults have very nice kendo as well considering practice is only twice a week. The Sensei: " They are high ranking, good hearted, not intimidating once you get to know them:) Bonding: I hear they sometimes go out to Korean BBQ for team bonding before tournaments.
