Debbi is an open, warm and informed host who gladly answers questions about her alpaca family, which she is passionate about. Although I did not have an appointment, which is advisable, and called from the farm's driveway, Debbi kindly drove over from her nearby home and spent an hour with me chitchatting about all things alpaca. For you alpaca enthusiasts, the Merrills also operate a small gift shop with items incorporating alpaca fleece, including yarn from their own animals (how often do you get to meet and learn the name and story of the creature whose body produced the material for the socks you are about to knit?), hats, sweaters, socks and stuffed animals. If it can be made with alpaca fleece or has a picture of an alpaca on it, Debbi probably has it in stock. If you thrill to the idea of hearing alpacas hum in close proximity, stop by and check out the alpacas and kitties and ducks and geese. Debbi and Hank will doubtless put out their welcome mat.

And for a non-sweet wine connoisseur, this wine is exceptionally aromatic and balanced. Seemingly, from the time we entered this place they had lots of visitors. Another of the North Alabama wineries, this place is impressive. After chatting with the owner, Keith, a gregarious and informative historian you can see that he has turned this winery into a competitor one that others in Alabama and surrounding areas, best take notice. Since they don't sell outside of Alabama or in restaurants at this point, they are known by simple marketing which is by, Word of Mouth. Darn, that speaks volumes on how good their wines are. From the outside, the winery appears modest and unassuming with a homemade cat sanctuary off to the side as you enter as well as comfortable seating if you want to sit awhile and drink a few glasses of wine. However, once inside you see a display of wines in a modern showcase, signage revealing free wine tasting, wall art and decor throughout. The focal point, an American flag with wines and champagne glasses adorning it, as though they were selected to display a vestige of the modern south which is now a true competitor in the wine game. Keith, personable, engaging and endearing. He served as the wine pourer, provided the archive of the winery and even gave my party of 4 a tour. He showed us the vats used for making the wines, bottling techniques to include corking and labeling as well as gave us insight into how the infamous Skeeter P came into existence. The wines ranging from sweet to dry and each having its own unique flavor of bright, aromatic, bold, bountiful, crispy and fruity to name a few descriptors of the full bodied taste. As a true dry wine lover, I was pleasantly surprised at the enjoyment of the sweet taste of Skeeter P (SP), made of peach, pear and apple. Keith speaks of its uncanning existence with pride and serendipity. Although I enjoyed the blueberry and pomegranate dry wines, SP sold it for me. Can't wait till my next visit to 'Bama to come back and see the new wines as well as the old favs.

I especially love how much they incorporate local natural features, live caves and all of the incredible natural diversity in the state. They really do a good job of going from local to global natural history. Also, they one of the largest collections of bird specimens, even including some extinct birds. And, we can't forget the Bird of Prey trail behind the museum with resident bird ambassadors! The Educational Interpreters work with the birds and do such a fantastic job presenting. I highly recommend the Creature Feature and Saturday Alive! programs - check out their website at exploreamag.org to see descriptions of all the live animal ambassadors. Lots of fun stuff for the kids both at the museum and all the extra programs offered!

Talladega GP site just over an hour from Atlanta which makes it a perfect place to unwind after a…read morelong week of monotonous work. The race track sits just outside of the Talladega city limits in Munford Alabama. It's a small race course (1.4 miles) in comparison to Road Atlanta and neighboring Barber, but still a blast to ride. The gate fees will run you $10.00 per person, and you get to drive in across the race track when you come through the gates. They added power in the pits this year so the loud sound of generators has subsided a bit and I couldn't be happier to pay $10.00 per day to run my tire warmers, fans and mickey mouse radio. The overall amenities are sparse with a few restrooms located on the premises and a small food building that serves your local "amusement park like" fare. The track is small and flat for the most part so you can see riders as they work their way through each turn. The view's are OK, but not great. Due to a lack of elevation the track doesnt realy offer up and great vantage points for viewing riders. From a riders point of view Talladega is a ton of fun. That 1.4 miles goes rather quickly if you're on your game. The track offers a great mix of banked, high speed turns along with some technical low speed bowls. It's really a great little track and it's usually a bit cheaper than the larger premier tracks. Tally is the best bang for the buck within 1.5 hours of Atlanta and that's what keeps me coming back.
