Several of us went on a ~4 mile hike through this rugged, stunningly beautiful park last weekend…read more We passed through dry washes and climbed switchback trails to the top of mesas with excellent views of Lake Havasu. We saw a huge variety of cacti and other native flora. I can't comment on the campgrounds. But overall the park seems to be very well maintained with clearly marked trails of varying length and difficulty. The park offers views of a seemingly vast expanse of water. Yet, when faced with the ever increasing demands from thirsty metropolitan areas throughout the Southwest, it begins to seem like only a semblance of abundance. Turn and walk a few hundred yards inland to where the lake is no longer visible and you're struck by the stark, unrelenting reality of the desert. Coming from Minnesota, I admit to being at times somewhat complacent about water. It's easy to take for granted when surrounded by lakes, rivers and streams. But I came away with a renewed appreciation and respect for just how precious water really is. At the very least, no matter where I am I can take simple measures like turning off the tap when shaving and brushing my teeth and limiting the length of showers. Modest efforts to be sure. But I have to believe they are still very much worth doing.

My dog was diagnosed with diabetes, which was expected. After two appointments to make sure we had adequate information we started our dog on insulin and a new diet. The vet that they had working there, which was apparently not the normal vet, told us our dog would live a long life and to come back a week and a half later for tests. I wasn't told what to watch for on Insulin. My dog got really sick. I didn't understand it at first. My dog has a sensitive stomach and as I mentioned we had to change his diet. He had puke but that was normal when you gave him new food. I wasn't aware that puking was a sign that the insulin wasn't working and he was very sick. I was never told the warning sign to watch for. By the time I understood that things were bad I rushed him to Reno to an emergency hospital. The hospital wasn't able to do anything. He was too far gone. I called Desert trails veterinary services several days after the incident. I couldn't call them any sooner because I was so distraught and sad. I told them I was very upset with the service I got. I felt so depressed and hurt that I let my dog die. Had I known the warning signs to watch for I could've saved him. The lady that answered the phone said she'd look into it when she called me back she didn't say she was sorry she didn't give me condolences for my loss she just said they weren't going to do anything and it wasn't their fault. I feel like this veterinary service is a cold hearted money grubbing scam. If you value your pets life and he don't go here they are horrible. It cost me my family members life my pet for me to understand this.

First I wonder why YELP posted one negative review with two 5 star reviews under "NOT RECOMMENDED"…read more I have chosen to NEVER move from Winnemucca because of the care Dr. Schwartz shows to animals.. sitting on the floor with them until they are comfortable with him; allowing the owner to be with the animal while administering care.... and especially his amazing gift of veterinary science. He now has another vet with him, Dr. Matsuura, who likewise likes animals (some bets don't!!), is quite bright and gentle with the animals. Regarding those who are angry about not having the funds to pay up front yet expect the vet to trust for payment while the individual is not an established client. We all have bills to pay and neither human doctors nor animal doctors are charity organizations. I have told MANY to take their animals in before the animal is sick to create a relationship with the vet.. they don't do it and then don't understand why the vet would not know them nor their ability to pay. Then, you can always drive to Reno and be told the same thing at another veterinary hospital. And as far as being pricey, I paid for my daughters' vet bill in Florida.. whew!!!

So we went to Zimmerman. I was in the lobby a total of 5 minutes before me and my dog was swept into the back by the extremely warm and friendly staff, and the vet looked at him. She checked him out, gave us antibiotics and painkillers for him, a cone and told us what to do in the next few days if that didn't work. She was very kind and patient and our bill was only $120. I've never been to such an amazing vet who doesn't want to milk people to try and save their pets! Would recommend to everyone!!" He healed up amazingly!! My family and I had never been axe-throwing before. It is EPIC! We are all hooked now!…read more I can't recommend this place highly enough. It doesn't look like much; it's a small storefront in a strip mall right next to the giant Ridley's Market. Perhaps it used to be a hole-in-the-wall restaurant or something. But now, it is a place where you can HURL AXES AT THE WALL for an hour! My family and I live in California, and we were in Winnemucca on Saturday 10/14/23 for the solar eclipse. Looking for something to do on Saturday afternoon (the eclipse was in the morning), I called ahead and was pleasantly surprised to learn that Battle Born Axe Throwing was not booked out, was reasonably priced, and was open late. On the phone, I asked the proprietor (Anthony) what the minimum age is. He said there's no strict minimum age, but he usually recommends 11 and up, because it's hard for younger kids to use the heavy axes. So around 5:30 PM, my whole family (me and my two brothers, all 40-ish, and our kids, ages 12, 11, 9, 8, and 1), descended on Battle Born Axe Throwing, not knowing what to expect. It was super chill and yet totally awesome! We were the only customers at that time, so Anthony (a soft-spoken and incisive guy in his late 20s) took it upon himself to tutor us in the ways of axe-throwing. He actually stayed with us for our whole one-hour session and gave us lots of pointers, demos, do's and don'ts, anecdotes, and encouragement. We just rented one lane ($40/hr), which can accommodate two throwers at a time. That was fine, because we took turns, and those who weren't throwing had a chance to watch and learn. However, if we weren't absolute beginners, I think we would have wanted two lanes for a party our size. Over one hour, here were the approximate results: My older brother and his 12-year-old son each stuck the axe about 14 times each! My younger brother got his butt kicked by them, but he stuck it a couple times as well! Myself, my 11-year-old daughter, and my almost-10-year-old niece each stuck the axe about 4-5 times each. I even got a bullseye. My just-turned-8-year-old son tried, but he was definitely too young and small. And our almost-2-year-old baby had to be carefully kept out of the way (we took turns watching him). After 1 hour, my daughter was asking "Mom, can we do this again when we go home to California?!" So, if you are in Winnemucca, don't miss Battle Born Axe Throwing - it was one of the absolute highlights of our trip!
