My family and I had never been axe-throwing before. It is EPIC! We are all hooked now!…read more I can't recommend this place highly enough. It doesn't look like much; it's a small storefront in a strip mall right next to the giant Ridley's Market. Perhaps it used to be a hole-in-the-wall restaurant or something. But now, it is a place where you can HURL AXES AT THE WALL for an hour! My family and I live in California, and we were in Winnemucca on Saturday 10/14/23 for the solar eclipse. Looking for something to do on Saturday afternoon (the eclipse was in the morning), I called ahead and was pleasantly surprised to learn that Battle Born Axe Throwing was not booked out, was reasonably priced, and was open late. On the phone, I asked the proprietor (Anthony) what the minimum age is. He said there's no strict minimum age, but he usually recommends 11 and up, because it's hard for younger kids to use the heavy axes. So around 5:30 PM, my whole family (me and my two brothers, all 40-ish, and our kids, ages 12, 11, 9, 8, and 1), descended on Battle Born Axe Throwing, not knowing what to expect. It was super chill and yet totally awesome! We were the only customers at that time, so Anthony (a soft-spoken and incisive guy in his late 20s) took it upon himself to tutor us in the ways of axe-throwing. He actually stayed with us for our whole one-hour session and gave us lots of pointers, demos, do's and don'ts, anecdotes, and encouragement. We just rented one lane ($40/hr), which can accommodate two throwers at a time. That was fine, because we took turns, and those who weren't throwing had a chance to watch and learn. However, if we weren't absolute beginners, I think we would have wanted two lanes for a party our size. Over one hour, here were the approximate results: My older brother and his 12-year-old son each stuck the axe about 14 times each! My younger brother got his butt kicked by them, but he stuck it a couple times as well! Myself, my 11-year-old daughter, and my almost-10-year-old niece each stuck the axe about 4-5 times each. I even got a bullseye. My just-turned-8-year-old son tried, but he was definitely too young and small. And our almost-2-year-old baby had to be carefully kept out of the way (we took turns watching him). After 1 hour, my daughter was asking "Mom, can we do this again when we go home to California?!" So, if you are in Winnemucca, don't miss Battle Born Axe Throwing - it was one of the absolute highlights of our trip!

I have just started Kaia, this was my 3rd class (the first 2 being in Sparks), so I am behind the other girls that were there, and still pretty weak. She modified all the exercises for a beginner, and still encouraged me every step of the way. Since I work in Sparks, the Spanish Springs Kaia, is working with the Winnemucca Kaia, so I can still attend classes, for one price, based on which location I am in for the day. It took a while to get worked out, but the kinks were with the national company, each local ownership provided amazing customer service, and I highly recommend sticking with conversing with the local entities vs. the corporate side of things. Amber started us off with a fun hula hooping warm up activity, fun and "pump you up" music, and ended with a few nutrition tips and a reminder to drink lots of water. The only improvement would be to the website, as the class times aren't listed, but Amber responds extremely fast and can give you the times. Right now, its Monday thru Wednesday with 5 am, 9 am, and 5:30 pm classes, with Thursday being the walk/run day, at 6 am, and back to the other schedule for Friday. Unlike the bigger city schedule, we don't have classes over the weekend here, which I actually prefer. The main point, I was nervous and embarrassed to start Kaia, they advertise as a place for all types and levels, but you never know what you are getting into. And while I was discouraged I wasn't at the same level as the other girls my first day, Amber, made me feel like, the work I did do, was awesome for me, and so it motivated me to keep working hard so I can see the results. We saw a huge variety of cacti and other native flora. I can't comment on the campgrounds. But overall the park seems to be very well maintained with clearly marked trails of varying length and difficulty. The park offers views of a seemingly vast expanse of water. Yet, when faced with the ever increasing demands from thirsty metropolitan areas throughout the Southwest, it begins to seem like only a semblance of abundance. Turn and walk a few hundred yards inland to where the lake is no longer visible and you're struck by the stark, unrelenting reality of the desert. Coming from Minnesota, I admit to being at times somewhat complacent about water. It's easy to take for granted when surrounded by lakes, rivers and streams. But I came away with a renewed appreciation and respect for just how precious water really is. At the very least, no matter where I am I can take simple measures like turning off the tap when shaving and brushing my teeth and limiting the length of showers. Modest efforts to be sure. But I have to believe they are still very much worth doing.
