One of the most popular meeting places in the city of Munich, it's easy to understand why as it stands at one end of the large Marienplatz square. There are a few traditions that happen here, some that date back to the 16th century. The funnest one, I think is the "wallet washing" where the mayor of Munich puts an empty wallet in the fountain to ensure that the city funds will be filled again next year. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area. [Review 12020 overall, 1803 of 2019.]

I had to go online and research. The original neo-Gothic fountain was built by Konrad Knoll between 1862 & 1865 but was destroyed during World War II. Sculptor Josef Henselmann rebuilt the current version in 1954 using surviving bronze figures. The fountain honors local guilds. It hosts the Metzgersprung (butcher's apprentice leap) and an Ash Wednesday tradition where the mayor washes an empty wallet in the water to bring financial good luck for the city.

We started the morning at Marienplatz, then walked from there to the Tor, not really knowing what to expect. It was Christmas Eve, and the last day of this particular market. It was also a bit early in the morning, so most of the stalls were still closed up tight when we arrived. We did walk around the open area (or rather, the place the housed the market stalls) a bit, then took a bit of a stroll around the neighborhood closest to Sendlinger Tor, but there wasn't really much to see or experience. It was a quick visit, and I felt a bit sad about walking away before the stalls opened, but we had several hours before things officially opened, and there wasn't much to do. We did end up (accidentally) going back later that same day, as we'd just kept walking from Marienplatz and ended back up at the gate (without really realizing it at first; we'd gone by a different route, and didn't make the connection that this was the same market until we were in the middle of it). I'm glad we went, but I think our timing was just off. I'd like to think it was way more lively every other day before this, the last day they were open.

The cause of his death is still a mystery and will probably remain so; but the actual spot where he was found is marked with a cross (in the water) and the Chapel was erected 1896-1900 to accommodate remembrance services for this fascinating and eccentric monarch. The Chapel is not open to the public but you can easily see into the interior through a grille. The Chapel itself is built in a Byzantine-Romanesque style, with a high pointed roof over the central cupola, and a wonderful Romanesque portico around the main doorway. The interior is decorated with marble and mosaics. The Chapel can be reached by well marked footpaths through pleasant woodland from the villages of Berg and Leoni. From either end it's a walk of around a mile. Both villages are served by the regular ships from Starnberg, Possenhofen and Tutzing. Berg Castle is now in private ownership and not open to the public.
