If you know me even a little bit, or have just bothered to look at my Yelp profile, you already know I'm an adult with multiple disabilities.
If you know me a little better, you also know that I work in the field of disability as a provider director for a government agency serving people with disabilities.
In other words, I'm passionate about employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
So, when I come across a business that has intentional hiring practices inclusive of disability or is centered around competitive employment for people with disabilities I'm overjoyed.
Buttermilk Mountain is such a business.
Buttermilk Mountain sells Buttermilk's Biscuits, dog treats made by adults with disabilities. With a goal of teaching the bakers important life and job skills, Buttermilk Mountain was the brainchild of Jodi Maslanka, a former Chicago resident now living in Indy whose experiences around disability are both personal and professional.
Fun fact: Maslanka means "buttermilk" in Polish.
Buttermilk's Biscuits are sold at Farmers' Markets, Pet Expos and Holiday Bazaars including Statehouse Market, Fort Ben Farmers Market, and Eskenazi Farmers Market among others. You get 10 biscuits in a package for $5. Proceeds are used to host fun events for families who have individuals with disabilities.
There's so much to love about this organization from providing life and job skills for people with disabilities to providing a needed good for a reasonable price to using the funds wisely to benefit families in need.
Now then, I can't speak much to the biscuits. I haven't tasted them. I probably won't (probably. If you know me, you also know I'm a little weird.). I do know they are "all natural pumpkin dog treats." So, yeah. Pumpkin. They must be pretty good, right?
Seriously, I look forward to continuing to support them and also providing the treats to dogs in need. There's so much of a win/win here. This is another one of Indy's hidden gems that you can find at a farmers market near you. read more
