Great sunsets. Park along the street (Channel Drive in Montecito) next to the Four Seasons Biltmore and walk around or wait for the sun to set. You'll have to walk over rocks to walk on the beach. When there's a King tide, the waves sometimes splash up onto the street. Not too crowded in the winter. Definitely worth the trip. read more

I unfortunately stepped on both! great sunsets with views of the rigs, not too busy, nice quiet area, lots of lady bugs, and a really cool sailboat wreck to take pictures of if the tide allows. This is the place to go for a panoramic view of beauty. Butterfly Beach is one of the most well-maintained in the area. It's on the western end of Montecito and resembles the city itself when it comes to tidiness and overall maintenance. The beach itself isn't too large but is consistently clean. The sand is unobstructed by rocks or seaweed. The tide is usually low so it's not a spot to surf, but the sand area is large enough to sit down with a blanket and enjoy the ocean air. This beach borders a well-landscaped bike path and the now-shuttered Biltmore hotel. There is a large retaining wall which is a great spot to sit and enjoy the view without having to set foot on the sand. There is no private parking, but the street spots are a'plenty. This beach is also popular amongst celebrities. While I've never seen any of them here personally, I've heard that many frequent it on a normal basis. Definitely worth checking out for the beauty alone. Who knows, you may just happen to spot a celebrity yourself! read more

Beautiful beach with street parking and located between resorts so in a weird way certain parts of the beach is secluded or "nicer." The waves are right, the sand is grainy. The section that I was laying on, had very small ratio of sand to ocean, but everyone was friendly and there were no vendors or boats out as it was just people and the ocean. read more

Few people were out there tanning or walking their dogs. Other than that, there wasn't much traffic at all overall. What I like about this beach is the free road side parking. My memory of Butterfly Beach goes back to 1969 when Platform A blew and the infamous Santa Barbara Oil Spill largely sparked the modern international environmental movement! I really don't remember how long it took for butterfly beach to regain it's beauty but it most certainly has. It has been the location a hundred weddings and I am sure countless marriage proposals, it is that kind of spot. To walk along the bluffs above Butterfly gives you Santa Barbara's most beautiful look at the Pacific ocean. Ty Warner did an excellent job when he created that bike path. A number of years ago it was becoming a scene during the summer months with too many parties, too much alcohol and amplified music. The City (or County) passed an ordinance banning alcohol and amplified music and it again became mellow. As I recall there was supposed to be the option of obtaining a permit for alcohol on the beach but from what I have heard that has never happened. Dogs are allowed on the beach but bring a leash! Animal control seems to love giving tickets to dog owners who let their dogs run free. read more

A friend who lives in SB actually recommended this beach to me and told me it was actually her favorite beach out of all the ones in SB and I can see why. It really is a beautiful beach located in a private street across the street from a resort and not as much traffic as the other beaches. Parking is somewhat limited along the sidewalks of the resort and the beach side, but if you're patient, you'll be able to find someone leaving soon enough. The beach is very clean even with all the dogs that are let loose off their leashes by their owners since the city also has dog poop bag dispensers located conveniently close to the entrances into the beach. Besides that, it's a great place to bring families for walks along the short shoreline to the public sidewalk or for kids to play in the sand. With a wonderful skyline filled with clouds and boats, it's very serene indeed at anytime of the day. read more

I actually hadn't been to this particular beach in many years until we were at the Four Seasons Biltmore this past weekend. It's a lovely little stretch of beach, not overly crowded both in terms of cars or foot traffic, and it's ultra easy access..... not usually something one would say when talking about a beach. We were there on a Sunday in July, and the weather was perfect along with it not being overly crowded. Now that I know it's like this, I'd make the drive more often just to avoid all the typical beach nonsense; this is such a pretty beach. read more

This is a nice secluded beach. Not too many people here. Not too dirty. Right in front of the four seasons hotel. I guess this is the hotel's personal beach. The best thing about the beach is that you don't have to take a bunch of steps to get down to the beach, like so many other beaches out there. A few steps and you are there. This is an amazing beach. It's narrow - so narrow that a high tides forces you off of the beach. The people who hit this beach tend to be on the attractive side, those rich Montecito people take good care of themselves. You can walk along the beach all the way to East Beach. There is an abundance of parking along the street but on some really nice days it can be very difficult to find a spot. I've eaten lunch here on a few occasions. It's really peaceful. read more

One of the best beaches I have been to. I decided late in the afternoon that I needed to see the sunset into the ocean. So, I looked on Yelp and found Butterfly Beach. Done deal, lets roll. It took about an hour and 20 minutes to get there from my home in the West San Fernando Valley. I got a little lost, so i stopped at a gas station to ask where I was going. They guy told me I was literally a block away and that parking may be a little tough because most people like to go watch the Sunsets. Anyhow, there was tons of parking along Olive Mill road and the beach wasnt nearly as crowded as I had expected. I kicked my shoes off and marched the 20 feet to the ocean and danced along the onset of waves. Remarkably, this beach is dog friendly and my lil Rudy had a wonderful time running around with other dogs and jumping over tide pools. As the sun began to set, I found a log that was perfect to sit on and watched its majestic splendor go to sleep into its watery bed. Almost immediately, the tide began to rise and we were forced to move on. It was a wonderful afternoon. read more
