Excellent dinner! The seafood pie is outstanding. We're staying here tonight (unfortunately one night) as we drive around the southern coast, cramming as much Ireland into our vacation. Fantastic hotel, wonderful room! Highly recommend! read more

Klondyke House

Yet another lovely stay at Klondyke House. The location is perfect along the Ring of Kerry, near…read morethe sea, surrounded by mountains and rolling green Irish countryside. This is a magical place to visit, truly enchanting. The hosts always take care of us well. They know everything about the area, having spent most of their lives in Waterville, and Cahersiveen (larger town just down the road). The Waterville Golf Links - a world class golf course - is located within minutes by car. Excellent seafood restaurants are nearby, either by car or on foot. The Waterville Craft Market is located right next door. Also nearby, the Tech Amergin Arts Centre offers all sorts of interesting classes, workshops, art exhibits, as well as amusing Irish film nights we enjoyed viewing during our stay. Lastly, behind the B&B, they have a lovely modern vacation rental property that is available to rent by the week. Having stayed in the B&B, and the vacation rental, I highly recommend both. My only complaint: I can't stay here long enough!

I always…read morefigured that they don't offer the facilities and comfort of a hotel, and the whole "staying in someone's home" vibe was something of a turn off. Klondyke house completely changed my perceptions of this. Our room was of the standard of many hotels I've stayed in, very modern and clean. It also had a lovely bathroom (which appeared to be brand new, or else very well maintained), with a very nice, powerful shower (I like a good shower). Everything you'd expect in a hotel -- kit for making tea and coffee, hairdryer, good TV, free and fast Wifi -- it was all there. Noise does seem to travel between rooms in this house, but the other guests were very quiet. I would worry about the noise levels had there been any louder guests. The proprietors were nice and friendly, but not at all overbearing. They made polite conversation without annoying you (I'm not really a people person when on holiday, and am always wary of B&Bs because I'm worried of the hosts being up in your business). The breakfast is beautiful! A very good selection, and the soda bread is a highlight (bacon and salmon are also very good). I do prefer the buffet style of hotels, because I like to try a bit of everything when on holidays, but I appreciate this mightn't be feasible in a B&B. Maybe the hosts could encourage guests to order more than one thing from the breakfast menu? But that's a tiny gripe, the food and service were both wonderful. The property is a five minute walk into the heart of the village. There isn't a huge amount to do in Waterville itself, but it's at the centre of a beautiful part of Ireland, so there's a plenty of attractions in the vicinity. If staying for a week or so, a car would be handy for seeing the sights, but for a weekend, all you need is to make your way to the pubs for the great seafood. A highly enjoyable weekend, and the Klondyke B&B played a large part in that. I would recommend it to anyone.

They have 3 pools, a nice spa with free steam rooms and gym, ocean access (though bring a wet suit!), and two restaurants. I thought service was excellent, and the food in the restaurants was very good. They have a family room (king plus two twins) which was very reasonable and a great option for families. There's lots to do- a game room, tennis courts, walking trails, murder mystery, etc. We really enjoyed our stay, and it was the kid's favorite place in Ireland. Be aware though that the resort is historic, which some would perceive as dated. It's also off the beaten path, with most other dining options some drive away so plan on eating at the hotel a lot. My only other gripe would be that you have to make reservations for the pool, which is kind of a hassle.

In addition to comfortable surroundings, the food here was excellent, with the staff able to cater for our large group of hungry rowers at dinner time (most of whom weren't fortunate enough to stay in the hotel), as well as providing substantial breakfasts and great coffee and lunch. Even when we tried to eat elsewhere (to give other local places a chance), we kept ending up being drawn back again for more!

There was one point where the lane went down to a single-lane and luckily we were behind a bus, so we just followed him through as he took the lead. Other areas of the drive were narrow lanes and windy roads, but not nearly as stressful as managing through the cities and round-abouts. We had a beautiful day for this scenic drive and we got our first views of the rolling, grassy hills with the rock wall dividing the properties. There were lots and lots of cows and the ocean peaked through during the last 30 minutes or so of the drive. It reminded me a lot of our version of the PCH drive in California from Ventura to Monterey, and was truly breathtaking. As we drove into Dingle, it was small but we could still feel the hustle and bustle from all the tourists. Dingle is a little surf town known for its fresh seafood and the location. We strolled around town, which was really just 3-4 streets, to look at the shops, restaurants and enjoy some people watching. We stumbled on a beer garden and after realizing that we were at a main pub, Dick Macks. There were tourists in this areas but also some local folks and we found a bench to share with another couple. *Pro tip* this may seem obvious, but if you stay at a B&B, you are expected to eat at the B&B in the morning... Even if you aren't hungry or don't want what they are serving or whatever.

Right off the start, if you plug in the address of Driftwood Bed and Breakfast in your GPS, you will end up on a golf course behind the actual B&B. GPS issues aside, you're in for a treat at Driftwood B&B. It feels more like staying in a good friend's home than anything else. Your hosts Mignonne and Peter are immensely friendly and knowledgeable in the area, and more than accommodating. Parking is readily available out front of the B&B and it's a 10-15 min walk to downtown Kenmare and a good jumping off point for the Ring of Kerry. The rooms are large and plush, with a large bed (if it's a double it's a big double, probably closer to a queen), private bathroom, satellite TV, and fast WiFi. Everything looks to be really new and up-to-date, and the place is refreshingly modern and yes, there are pieces of driftwood decorating the walls. The breakfast is made to order by Peter, who provides a menu with several options along with a serve yourself breakfast area. The food is pretty good and light, a welcome reprieve in Ireland in which you usually stuffed with large breakfasts. All in all, you'll probably love Driftwood B&B, and rightfully so.
