Unprepossessing from the outside unless you are a fan of industrial architecture but once through the doors it's glorious fabrics galore. There are sections of dressmaking fabric, including patterns, lots and lots of upholstery fabric, strange fluorescent furry stuff for making strange fluorescent furry things (aliens?), sheer voiles for curtains and more more more! In my time I've been here to buy things to refurbish furniture, make fancy dress for the kids and our latest purchase is the complete kit for stitching our own ball gown - Vivienne Westwood is looking to her laurels!

All of these businesses support the fundamental drive behind Crafty Sew and Sew, offering patrons of the shop plentiful choice where fabrics are concerned. Crafty Sew and Sew offer a good range of craft items and ready-to-make kits of all descriptions. Rather than go into Cabot Circus turn left and left again and go behind the McDonalds and walk along that road and you will find it. Fabric Land does what it says on the tin. They offer rolls of any fabric you can imagine as well as a well stocked haberdashery offering needles, threads, ribbons etc. The products are sold at a reasonable price, but Fabric Land can afford to be a little more pricey as there are so few fabric stores and haberdasheries around. The service is OK - if a little rough around the edges, but it is a great find as I have not found anywhere else in Bristol centre that still offers this kind of range.

This branch is pretty much in the same location - but just on the opposite side of the road! I saw their new store a few weeks ago and popped in, and I was amazed at how much bigger and better it was, even though the old branch was already pretty good! This new Fabric Land opened up a couple of months ago and looks brand new and modern inside. All their fabrics are really neatly presented, and all the different sections are clearly set out so you can find what you're looking for pretty easily. This store has a massive selection of different fabrics available which is great. I have always loved Fabric Land because it's reasonably priced, has some good quality products, and the staff always seem very happy to help - and the same goes for this branch. I dabble in the odd bit of textiles making at home and I now get my supplies from here, I'd also say that if you are a student then it's a brilliant place for fancy dress, you can grab some leopard print material for under a fiver and do a make-shift cave girl outfit pretty easily! The store is set out like a DIY shop but the difference is they have made the effort of laying carpet. With a multitude of fabric choices any designer or student will be able to create some fantastic pieces from the material available. What's interesting about this is that they opened up shop just before the previous global recession, and having weathered this, they possess the foresight and experience to get through the current one. Butterfly Fabrics is a more upmarket material shop and stocks designer fabrics such as Liberty and John Kaldor, quality silks from India and China, as well as stocking a wide range of craft fabrics for patchworking and quilting. Inevitably the sell all of the associated items to go with this, including patterns for clothes as well as patchworking, along with threads, needles, buttons etc etc... They also sell all the craft accessories you could ever need with roles of thread and sewing equipment and supplies. The materials here are more stylised and meant for serious tailors and dressmakers, art people and design students.
