Step inside, though, and you'll find what I genuinely think is one of the best restaurants in Minnesota. The food is phenomenal -- creative, beautifully presented, and easily approaching Michelin-level quality, but without any of the pretension or pricing you might expect. The menu is constantly changing, the ingredients and execution are outstanding, and somehow the whole experience still feels wonderfully humble and relaxed. Prices are also incredibly reasonable considering the quality of what comes out of the kitchen. I make a point of stopping here whenever I'm on the North Shore. It's only about 10 minutes north of Duluth, and if you're visiting the area and only have time for one really memorable meal, make it this one. An absolute North Shore gem.

The staff was incredibly welcoming and sweet, and I loved all the thoughtful little touches throughout the restaurant. One of my favorites was the guestbook they invite visitors to sign before leaving. It's details like that that make a place feel extra special. I asked about dessert to go, and neither of the cheesecakes on the menu were available, but the server said they had some chocolate peanut butter cheesecake, which wasn't listed anywhere. I got that and had a few bites before putting it in the fridge - it was ok, but nothing special (5/10). I'm not sure I'll even finish it, and that's saying something because cheesecake is my favorite dessert. Ambiance was dark and kind of dingy. Things needed to be dusted and wiped down. It felt like there was a sticky layer of grease on them (chairs, columns, table edges, etc.). This was a bit alarming considering every server seemed to be female, but one. This made us feel like maybe they weren't properly washing their hands but we don't know that for sure so I'll go on. The waitress finally came to our table after 15 minutes or so and took our drink order along with our food order as we had plenty of time to decide. I ordered Pilsner on tap to drink, only to have her come back 10-minutes later and me that they were out. Okay no biggie, I'll get something else. Our food finally arrived and my wife had ordered a loaded baked potato without sour cream. We immediately noticed her baked potato was completely smothered with sour cream. In addition, she found a nice strand of hair in her food. Lovely.... We both had the Jagerschnitzel as both of us had had it several times before. The Jagerschnitzel did not taste right and my wife said her water tasted like it came out of a hose. All other tables seemed to be served before us, checked on regularly, and have much better wait staff than we had. Upon asking for our bill we assumed she would at least notice the big glob of sour cream on the plate that my wife had to scrape off and realize that she had forgot to tell them not to include it, but no. We paid our bill and ran for the door. As far as the ambiance goes, the restaurant is really nice but we had flies around us as we were trying to eat our meal.
