The Pig & Whistle - Outdoor patio seating

The Pig & Whistle

I'll start with the good and then get into the bad…read more I like the decor of The Pig & Whistle. Inside has a bunch of beer steins, and alcohol memorabilia, fun posters and pictures in frames, it's all fun to look at and take in. The outdoor area is nice too, plenty of picnic type tables to help enjoy the good weather. And there is what looked like a mini garden, that's nice too. On the other side of things, when you order a starter and it's brought to you, sometimes it's nice to have plates to eat on too. The calamari was not tasty and was a rubbery texture, it came with a matching portion of french fries/chips and a small salad. The best thing about that plate was the aioli dipping sauce. The veggie stir fry was dripping in sauce and was far too spicy for my liking. It wasn't an even plate, with the over-sized vegetables and the skinny rice noodles in a pool of spicy sauce. And the prices for what you're getting, that didn't please me either. I'm sorry for the negative, but it was solely based on just the look and feel of the place, for sure it'd be a five star from me.

I have been in for drinks on several cold and windy days (which are numerous up there) and have always longed to enjoy all the space they have outdoors. They have a giant lawn area and lots of patio seating with colonial pine plantings around the place. Fun decorations inside with a very British theme.

Yet, in a way this bar really does have a lot of charm about it, as well as some great beers as well. In a way it was the rooftop that I really liked, but then again you can't go past a good rooftop bar, and there are some pretty good ones around as well. Yeah, this is one of those great bars that you can spend some time at on a nice summers evening, noting that it doesn't open until about 5:00 pm. Yeah, this bar was pretty awesome.

When we walked in there was a couple of folk in the main bar area, and to be honest, I wasn't entirely sure the place was even open. Thankfully it was, we got a couple of drinks as well as some Twisties (yay) and the bar guy even topped up my cider when we were paying for our drinks after I'd had a sip which I thought was super nice. We headed upstairs to the rooftop beer garden which again, had that kind of run-down vibe that might be offputting but I really like, and chilled out for an hour or so. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I really liked this bar. The bar guy says the food is really good too but we already had plans to go to Jimmy Grants nearby so maybe another time.

Hidden in an industrial estate in Braeside, miles from anywhere, is this hidden gem. The brewery…read morebar serving their beers brewed across the road has plenty of tap and bottled beers on offer. I went for the Hop Bomb, a great west coast US style IPA and a delicious spiced dark saison. Unfortunately I was driving so could only sample the 2 pots but would have loved to try the barrel aged stout. Just means I'll have to come back! The bar is only open from 4pm on Fridays and from midday on the weekends. I'm surprised they don't at lunchtime on Fridays as it was very busy at 4.30 when I visited. They have a smoker or barbecue out front which looked tempting. There is food available but I didn't try any during my fleeting visit. Loved the vibe of the place; very laid back. Bar staff friendly and knowledgeable about their beers. The place has beer barrels on racks against the wall and makes you feel like you're in a brewery setting and not just a bar. Will definitely be going back!

Where is Braeside? This is the question people are going to ask if you invite them to meet you at…read moreBoatrocker Brewery. The answer is probably a $50 Uber ride from wherever you are, but it is indeed worth it. A converted workshop lined with all manner of oak barrels, it's really not a place you go for ambience. Instead, it is a place to go get unique, unusual beers served by friendly brewers who will chat you up about beer, BBQ, and pretzels. What more could you possibly want? As I am partial to sours, farmhouse ales, and saisons, this place is seriously my beat. But, they also offer some whisky barrel aged stouts, which could come in handy over the long Melbourne winters. Their IPAs and pale ales are also of a pretty high standard. There is not a lot on offer food-wise, except some excellent german-style pretzels (served cold, unfortunately) and a cheese board. But, seeing as how BBQ is both standard beer food and super trendy right now, they will have the smoker up and running soon. Hey boys, I really think you should give tri-tip a go. Certainly, I will be back. That was never in question.

Hawker Beer and Wine Bar is located in the suburb of Highett just 30mins from Melbourne CBD. The bar is named after Harry Hawker, a local of the area. Harry George Hawker, was an Australian aviation pioneer. He was the chief test pilot for Sopwith and was also involved in the design of many of their aircraft. After World War One he co-founded Hawker Aircraft, the firm that would later be responsible for a long series of successful military aircraft. The bar itself is small and is directly across the road from the Highett train station, which seems to have some type of train passing through every 15mins. The fit-out is minimalistic, with large windows that give you a great view of the comings and goings in the area. What is great about this bar is the large cocktail list. With mostly original cocktails with a few traditional with a modern twist. The service is friendly and attentive, and I get the feeling if I lived in the area this would be my local. Apart from the great cocktails it has a good selection of beers and wines. It also had a pretty awesome snack menu, being provided by Typhoon, the Vietnamese restaurant next door. If you live in the area chances are you have either visited Hawker or know of it. If you haven't been do yourself a favour and pay them a visit, it won't disappoint.
