    Burlington Arcade - old money...
    John B.

I haven't been down in here in a while, it's slowly being homogenised into another 'ultra high end' Mayfair shopping area, where the international come to spend their (sometimes ill) gotten gains.... There are still a few vintage watch dealers down here but not half as many as a few years ago, slowly being replaced (I guess) as leases end and the boutiques move in. Less likely to see a minor Royal here these days and more likely to see an Eastern European Natural Gas Oligarch, change isn't always good...

Ahh yes the Burlington Arcade, a must see for anyone travelling through Mayfair. A very famous venue featured in such films as 101 Dalmatians starring Glen Close, & Patriot Games with Mr. Harrison Ford. It was designed by architect Samuel Ware and with its opening in 1819 created the first ever covered shopping arcade. Stop bye and have your picture taken with a Beadle, the private police force, dressed in the Edwardian style who are in charge of protecting the arcade from criminals of course but also from mothers with their prams, people who whistle, and of course from the ghost Percy, who enjoys rearranging the stock apparently. The window shopping is absolutely lovely, almost like walking through an art gallery, and if you can afford it the actual shopping is even better, that is if you are in the market for a monocle, which I think are really cool, or even an engagement ring (honey if you are reading this it was the little sapphire one with the two diamonds on the side).

It is a covered arcade with elegant atmosphere and many luxury, exclusive shops of clothing, accessories, watches crystal and jewelry. It has a beautiful architecture worth visiting. My favorite macaroon place - Laduree is at one end of it and so I always visit this arcade and spend some time window shopping. It's always fun to see vintage products and antique jewelry.

This shopping arcade, the first to open in the UK, dates back to 1819 and it really is a sight to behold. The guards who help maintain the air of decorum such grand surroundings demand are known as the Beadles. All the shops are extremely upmarket and carry only the finest goods. If you're in search of a gift for a very special occasion, you no doubt will find it here.

Lovely stroll but out of reach for the average person in terms of cost.

You may look but you cannot buy. I wanted to stroll through this arcade ever since I first saw the place in the 1998 remake of the Parent Trap. What caught my eye was the jewelry and the bowler hats. I thought naively that I could actually afford to buy something (maybe a pen or a broach?) but no, it's better to just dream. This arcade is simply divine, will definitely come again when in London.

Very high end!! A row of speciality shops but nice to duck into to get out of the mass crowd on the Main Street.

For any one of my friends traveling into London I always recommend veering off a little to Carnaby. Over the years some shops have come and go but some of my favorites remain open. I'm a huge Great Frog lover and their shop is nearby, also for us rock n rollers I can't help stopping into The Rolling Stones Uk store. Lots of major branded stores but also cute local vendors and stores. It's a very walkable street and safe. Plenty busy so come earlier in the day to beat the crowds. Another pro tip is catching a reservation at dishshoom down here as I've found it easier to snag a reservation here than at their other locations. Plenty of dining options though and local stalls like Starbucks and Joe & the juice. It's a touristy street of shops but I love it - definitely bookmark this area on your must shop / see list when on this side of town.

After having a tasty snack at Pizza Pilgrims, went to the two story Rolling Stones store which was my favorite place on Carnaby Street. The Market is picturesque with lovely flower carts by the entrances. Historically, Covent Gardens were the gardens for the convent. Today, the beautiful enclosed market hosts various vendors that change regularly. The market is a great way to connect with locals. We went to the market four times during our visit. On Sundays, various art vendors set up and we visited with a local fossil dealer and purchased a couple fossils. We loved our dinner in one of the nearby cafes. On Mondays, antique dealers set up and sell various treasures. My husband bought me a vintage bracelet. We also watched a quintet play in the atrium. We found a few reasonably priced souvenirs to take home for gifts. Plenty of great restaurants surround the Market. We ate at several places and enjoyed our meals. The Market always seems to be new and people were friendly.

I called in here to grab some food before getting the tube nearby to Wembley Stadium, there was a decent range of shops and places to eat, including brands such as Superdrug, Starbucks and Nandos', and a Waitrose store. Other stores here include Sainsbury's Local, Boots and 3, or if you're feeling hungry there is also the likes of itsu and Gourmet Burger Kitchen, the latter I only found out about after leaving it appeared to be hidden in the centre - shame! The entrance to the centre up a ramp which soon converted part into chairs looked quite dangerous, for me it looked like an accident waiting to happen with no clear lighting or signs to show it, which is why I can't help but wonder how this part of the building passed health and safety, which I can only guess is there down to it being grade II listed. A small selection of shops and places to eat and drink in decent surroundings, slightly quieter than getting something perhaps inside the Euston Station (or the square outside), and perhaps somewhere easy and nearby to go ahead of grabbing a train so it certainly is worthy of a solid three-star rating.
