The historical marker is located a short distance from the actual site. It's on the street next to the Roswell Town Square where you'll find parking and restaurants. The marker has the same text on each side and it reads, "Built in the early 1840's by Major James Stephen Bulloch. His second wife, married in 1832, was Martha Elliott. Their second daughter, Martha (Mittie) Bulloch and Theodore Roosevelt married here in 1853. Their son Theodore Roosevelt was the 25th President of the United States. "Elliott Roosevelt, another son of Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and Martha Bulloch, was the father of Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, who married her fifth cousin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 31st President (1932-45)." The city of Roswell has 3 preserved antebellum houses open for public tours. We stopped by all 3 one Saturday afternoon in February. All are located within a 1/2-mile radius, and 2 are literally within about 200 yards of each other. We started our tour with Bulloch Hall. It is located a bit south of the main Roswell business district. They have dedicated parking lot. Adjacent to that is a gift shop, but visiting that is optional since there are no tickets to buy. This was also the home with the highest profile historical connection, that being Teddy Roosevelt's mother. It was her family that built the house and she had lived their for part of her childhood. We wandered up to the main house and entered via the front door. The docent on duty was friendly and just asked for our zip code and how we'd heard about the venue. You are then free to wander the house via whatever route you like. Most rooms have a sign with a 4-digit code. You call a phone number and enter successive codes as you proceed. For each code, there is an accompanying description of the room's historical context and of its furnishings. The mansions of this period all seemed to follow the same basic floorplan - a central linear hallway with 2 or 3 rooms off each side and a staircase at the end. There was also a cellar/kitchen area and an upper floor. Most rooms just had period furnishings but some were given over to history displays, such as the family tree of the owners or their family's military participation. The same code scheme extends to part of the grounds and one or two outbuildings. I thought this was a fairly interesting place. It provided a good overview of what life was like in the area in the 1850s, at least for the upper tier of local society. read more

Bulloch Hall was built in 1839 by Major James Bulloch who along with Roswell King were founders of the Roswell, Ga. It is built in a Greek revival style by slave labor and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house itself is famous because it is the childhood home of Major Bulloch's 3rd child and second daughter-Margaret "Mittie" Bulloch. Mittie had married Theodore Roosevelt Sr. here in 1853. Of course Mittie's second child and oldest son Theodore Jr. would later become the 26th President of The United States. (Interestingly Mittie's youngest son Elliott would later marry Anna Rebecca Hall and his daughter Eleanor would one day marry another Roosevelt and become First Lady) Anothet of Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt's claim to fame is that she is rumored to have been the inspiration for Margaret Mitchell's Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind. Theodore Roosevelt actually visited the home in 1905 as well as Eleanor Roosevelt later on... It's pretty interesting stuff if you're into history and want to learn more about the area. The home is open from 10am to 3pm Monday through Saturday and Sundays 1pm to 3pm. The cost is $8.00 for adults. $7.00 for seniors. $6.00 for children. Children under 6 are free. read more

I feel like they could've done more here. We stopped by near Christmas time and they had a theme of women who have made contributions, such as the woman who invented Monopoly, Susan B. Anthony, etc. It had some nice information, however it seemed like much of the house was taken away from the guests; it was too cluttered. I don't feel like I got much of how someone in that house would've lived their life or the historical connection between the home's owner and the women that were being mentioned in the display. The area is gorgeous, but again I feel like they could've done more with exhibit. read more

If you want to see the 'Old South' - think Gone With The Wind - Bulloch Hall is the best option I've seen in the Atlanta area. Most of the beautiful building, inside and out, is original to when it was built in 1839, and on the surrounding grounds, there are many interesting features of plantation life from back then. Theodore Roosevelt's mother was lucky to live here when she was a girl / young woman! Good representation of old style home in our own backyard (surburban Atlanta). This is a restored homesite, originally belonging to the Mrs. Bulloch, who married Theodore Roosevelt's father. There are three structures on the property, yet I only visited the main house. This was worthwhile and interesting. read more

Very rich history that's filled with tears and trauma. All I could think about were those who were enslaved by Theodore and his family. You could feel the haunted energy while other people were smiling, taking photos, and not showing respect to the other tourists who might not have the connection they do to the land. Yep. I completely love this place. The first time I went was for a quilt show on Smithsonian Day, so it was free!!! Quilt show was great, especially because they had the attic open, which is typically not open to visitors. They have an awesome trilogy pass you can buy there to see Bulloch, Barrington, and Smith plantations. You can use a AAA discount, and admission price includes a tour, which starts every hour on the hour. And their gift shop is CUTE! Also, leave time to explore the grounds. Beautiful trails, a pond, educational slave houses, and a niiiice building that looks like it can be rented out for parties or weddings or something. Highly recommended! read more

So disappointed in the Bulloch Hall's Christmas for kids event. At 15.00 a person I guess we expected something much nicer but instead we felt we were taken advantage of. There was no group singing as advertised, no hunt for the Yule Log, no candy cane hunt, the one craft was so inferior and didn't come close to working. The snack was sad and there was nothing offered the adults(who also had to pay the 15.00). There were no directions on where the event was held and people were wandering around in the freezing rain and mud with babies and young children trying to find the location. Once found the room was way too small, too crowded, and had plastic garbage bags taped on the windows. They were not prepared and kept young children waiting for 18 minutes after the 10:00 start hour before they began. The craft they offered was a little cheap grapevine wreath (I mean tiny) with 3 (one red, one white, one green) little push pin to represent ornaments one pushed into the wreath and then bend the pin back. Who gives push pins to 4 year olds? Then there was a cheap plastic bell to twist onto the bottom but the amount of wire given made it impossible to actually attach the bell. It was ugly and cheap and not near worth the time the kids spent so frustrated The snack was a tiny cupcake that neither of our grandkids could eat due to being hard, old, and dried out. 6 tiny pretzels and 6 chocolate graham teddy bears. Nothing for the 15.00 the parents paid for themselves. Every parent voiced their extreme disappoint. Unbelievable that there was nothing, not even a glass of water offered to the parents. Once we made our way to the main house to see Santa the docents were not happy about the children in the house and kept telling little children to be quiet, don't touch ANYTHING. Outside of seeing Mr and Mrs Claus there was nothing for the kids to do in the house and boredom set in very quickly. Santa and Mrs. Claus were great but the 2 minutes with them was not worth the 60.00 we spent. We had taken our grandchildren and were expecting something much more interesting and fun for the money. I understand Bulloch Hall is expensive to run but to have such a cheap inferior event for such a high price is not the way to do it. We live here in Roswell and I doubt we will ever be willing to come to any other event held at Bulloch Hall, Smith Plantation, or Barrington Hall. What a fun tour! I grew up in Roswell and have visited Bulloch Hall on many previous occasions, but my girlfriend wanted to see it so we visited again yesterday. It was a fascinating experience. I remembered the depth of history tied to that house, but not the specific stories. Roswell truly is an amazing place that I'm proud to be from, but I digress. Our tour guide was extremely kind and equally knowledgable. She took her time in sharing with us each quality of the home and the lives that occupied it. We purchased the triple ticket deal where you can tour Bulloch Hall, Barrington Hall, and the Smith Plantation for $18 instead of $8 each. It's a good value for sure. Be sure to walk the grounds completely. The garden is pleasant and the reconstructed buildings hold even more historical information. If you're a history buff, this is a must-see. read more

I suggest buying the Trilogy Tour Pass for $18 at the Roswell Visitors Center. The website is confusing and offers incorrect info (i.e. There is ONLY one home on the tour that does NOT take charge cards: Archibald Smith Home... The website states only cash for all three. Additionally, the contact phone number never worked for me and I tried it over several days) The tours are offered at the top of the hour and last about an hour... Check for daily hours of operation. Bulloch: my docent was a sweet young lady with terrific energy named Alyssa. I was the lone visitor at that hour and enjoyed a private tour. Alyssa was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of detail about the home, property and family. I truly enjoyed the visit and walked away with some great information. She also offered some pointers on other local sites in which she thought I'd be interested. Barrington: Sue was my docent and, being the final tour of the day, I was the solo visitor again! Sue was able to talk about the family and history of the property the entire hour. She shared wonderful tidbits and pointed out a lot of terrific pieces throughout the home. I felt she really knew the family members personally. Smith: Matt was our docent and I really appreciated his style. I shared this final tour with a couple from PA. Matt did a nice job asking about us before introducing himself. This tour was also terrific... And as Matt pointed out, the only tour that covers the life of the home through its most recent owner. He did a great job of telling and showing the home's history from its original owner in the 1840's through its final inhabitant in the early 1990's. I had to split my visit into two days in order to see all three homes. The Trilogy Pass allows you to come back at your convenience... It isn't necessary to try and see all three on the same day. The homes share an interesting history and I'd highly recommend them to anyone visiting the area. read more

I tend to take family and friends to places that are "Atlantian", and this place is always on the list. It's close, inexpensive, and very interesting!!! The first time we visited, the picky lil' girl was around 3-4 yrs old. We saw the lower level where the kitchen was located, the first floor with common areas, then the second floor where the bedrooms were located. Needless to say when we hit the second floor and our daughter said she wanted to go back to the kitchen to see the lady in the kitchen, we were headed down the stairs and out the door!!! This place was not at all crowded and there was definitely no lady in the kitchen!!! Still a good historical place to visit! read more

I visited Bulloch Hall with my husband and we both loved it! There was a wonderful lady that worked in the gift shop where we paid our entrance fee. She was incredibly knowledgeable and took great pride in the property and its history. Our tour guide, Sara, was wonderful. She was so informative and gave us lots of background stories on the families. She answered our never ending stream of questions but always asked if we had any additional questions before we left a room. We were the last tour of the day and felt so lucky that we didn't have to share it with anybody. History is so important and this is a wonderful tour. We enjoyed seeing all of the furniture and extra touches in each room as far as books, clothing, china, etc. I highly recommend a visit. read more

I was lead to believe their was no history left around Atlanta - phooey on that! This stately Greek Revival Hall stands in total contrast to the nearby Smith Plantation Home just 5 minutes away.
