I joined this gym as it was the only one with a pool in my area and I heard from my colleagues that…read moreit was really nice, but expensive. I personally did not find it expensive as it's full peak membership price is £37 per month, while coming from Dublin myself where gym prices for hotel gyms range in the €60=75/month bracket so it sounded like a good deal to me for what you get. An outdoor and indoor pool, a range of classes, well equipped gym and studio rooms, personal trainer, 20% discount for Village accommodation, 10% discount for the spa and restaurant, free wristband that locks the locker so no need for coins or locks... certainly not something you come across everyday! I've has experience with a range of gyms in different countries, and the Village very cheap yet high quality, which is great. The staff are very friendly and the gym is kept clean. The wristbands for the lockers are pretty cool as well. They work like a sensor, so you just touch this machine to unlock, then pick a locker and press the button with the sensor part of the wristband and it locks. It's rubber and hence waterproof as well, which is very convenient and secure. Most of gym equipment is new and everything as a tv screen and internet to watch youtube etc. The negatives are that the pool is crowded and full of kids most of the time. There are no lanes and the adult swim times are very limited, so I would not recommend it for any serious or pro swimmers out there. Another thing is the cycle machines peddles and very far back than usual so it puts a lot of pressure on the knees and their didn't seem to be a way of adjusting the seat backward or forward. There are also only 3 bikes, but like 20 treadmills and cross trainers... I guess those machines are more popular in general. Overall: Cheap membership prices, good quality gym with 2 pools and various discounts attached.

I've been to enough gyms around the world and have also gotten my Yelp badge for it, and I must say…read morethis is a pretty good gym at the cheapest in Blackpool at £12.95pm. Open 24 hours, very large and spacious with a huge number of machines make this ideal for those who like peak hours but don't want to wait for machines. I always went peak time (evenings around 5pm-7pm) and never had to wait for a machine as there was always lots free despite there being many people. The gym is maintained very clean including the toilets and showers, and it has a new modern feel to it with a huge variety of weight machines that you don't often come across in most gyms. The equipment is also new. They run a variety of classes, such as abs classes, bums and tums, circuits etc. which can all be easily booked via your online account. The online interface is great; very easy to use, tracks you gym usage by number of times went per week/month and duration spent in the gym into a cool graph. You can manage payment information, book classes, and also buy online items such as protein powders and clothing at a members discounted price. Some practical tips: bring your own lock for your locker, there is 2 hours free parking and also a number of bike racks around the area (I found the one outside Sainsbury near the council to be "safest" as there was always the Sainsbury security guard around there). So far, I have been to Helio, Bannatyne, the Village, Palatine and Reform gyms in Blackpool, and this gym is the cheapest and I'd rank it second best from Bannatyne (which is a posh gym with a pool, sauna, spa etc..) in terms of quality, size, cleanliness and variety of equipment.

Went to the gym to join. Was directed to sign up kiosk by employee. Upon filling out the…read moreinformation found out it required UK banking information for the recurring payment section. The employee gave me the phone number and had to make the call on my pay as you go phone that went on for 15 minutes. The recommended solution was to sign up for another gym with Blackpool as the alternate gym that allowed a second gym for extra pound. When I then did this and got to the payment section it said there was a problem with the details entered for the credit card. To make sure it was not an issue with the card and being in the UK used a second card with the same result. Given I am an athlete in the UK and needed to continue with training, this is an unacceptable situation - their sign up system is completely inadequate and shows a lack of customer service.

Great atmosphere. Lots of equipment and made some friends. Been with the gym for a good few months…read morenow and am very happy.

I have been a member of both The Gym as well as the Village here in Blackpool (as well as millions…read moreof other gyms around the world on my travels), but switched to Helio after moving house as it was on the way from work so the location was convenient (the other two gyms were far and out of the way). This gym is very basic and kind of dingy, all the equipment is old and rickety and most of the members seem to be weight lifting guys as opposed to casual gym goers you see at the other two gyms. The one thing that kind of gets to me is the cross trainers... they shake and jerk a lot as opposed to running smoothly. It serves it's purpose as an exercise machine, but the jerkiness (probably due to being old and worn) is a bit annoying. The gym is very small but always quite empty, even in peak times as I heard that after The Gym opened up in town, many people left for that so it's great if you hate crowds. Pros: Convenient location which helps with motivation on cold winter nights, cheap (17.99 for full peak a month, cheaper for off peak), no joining fee of you get a referral or work for the NHS, no contract, and friendly staff, no crowds or queues, decent selection in terms of weight training. Also, opening hours are decent until 10pm. Cons: Small, dark, old jerky cardio machines, very basic and no frills: not much in the way of classes, personal training, no pool, spa etc. or any other fancy gym add ons. Overall, a no frills basic but contract free, affordable gym in Blackpool that faces up to some stiff competition with other gyms.
