How did I ever live in Savannah for years and years and never did I yet write a review for Johnnie…read moreGanem's?! Well, so I am now. You've probably heard all the jokes about how in Charleston they ask who your granddad was, in Macon what church you go to, and in Savannah what you'll have to drink. Well, those jokes are around for a reason. Savannah does like to drink: locals, natives, tourists, and SCAD students all are alike in that. And if you're local, you come to Johnnie's for your booze. Walking around the tightly-packed shelves of hard liquor you'll find a very good selection of . . . well, most everything but especially single-malt Scotches and sippin' Bourbons. You name a Scotch at about any price and they'll have it. You want something smokey? They'll have it. While they have an ample selection of everyday liquor, they also have the sort of bottles you almost feel like you've got to own a boat and several horses and have two ex-wives to even consider buying. But that's not all: the wine selection is impressive and then some. And walk over to the dusty rack on the side of the wines and find the Ports . . . and the Madeiras. So, you need to know something: Savannah was built on the Madeira trade in the colonial days. That's what the founding fathers drunk: not beer, not ordinary wine, not hard liquor but the fortified cousin of Port called Madeira. So much so that when the Rare Wine Co. decided to issue a curated selection of historically-inspired Madeiras they done named one after Savannah. And Savannah used to have a Madeira Club where gentlemen would gather for a fancy dinner with the wine and one would be assigned to present a lecture on a topic "beyond his field of expertise". Yeah. That's how the leaders of Savannah had their fun, for real. They're rare today, but sometimes still meet and I got invited to such a dinner and there's absolutely nothing like it. But anyhow, Johnnie's has a great selection of both Port and Madeira and that's very rare: you can happen on liquor stores with $300 bottles of Scotch but not hardly a single Madeira or decent Port in sight. Not here: if you have the coin you can get nearly any such you desire and there's several very respectable bottles at decent prices, too. All of this is why these hallowed yet dusty shelves get five stars and easily.

There are roughly 30 different types of wine available for purchase, with many being local Georgia wines. The owner was a very nice man and offered to let us try some of their top sellers, which were a summer peach blend and a wine shine. We purchased the summer peach blend right away and planned to drink it on our trip. We came back a second time and purchased a few more bottles including the wine shine. The owner was very knowledgeable about his products and even sold us on a red Zinfandel called 1000 Stories just by the way he described it. Savannah is a city of many small businesses and this place is one of the good ones. I would highly recommend this place for any fans of wine and anyone looking for souvenirs to bring home as he sells those as well.

I saw a sign for wine and, of course, I knew we had to go in. At first the place was completely empty and then, out of nowhere, this character of a man (whom I assume was the owner) pops up and asks if we are okay. Fast forward and we are having a full on conversation about wine, Savannah, and things to do around the area (since we were visiting). The man gave us some wines to sample and we left the shop with a local blueberry wine. I'm not a fan of sweet wine, but my boyfriend is still counting down to his next visit to Savannah so he can come back here and buy more. We left so happy, with an amazing bottle of wine and having supported a small business.
