Both of these churches are an outgrowth of Blue Sky Church in Bellevue, Washington. Walking in the door, everything seems perfect. Nicely dressed people, a talented worship team, a young, charming preacher. If you have studied any christian history, you'll quickly figure out they are Calvinist, and words like "elect" and "pre-destined" will be heard in the message. Outward appearance seemed to be really important to members here. People were sharp dressed, women in makeup and perfect hair. Everyone looked similar: no worn clothes, no one rough around the edges, no biker t-shirts, no tattoos, no nose rings. For a full building, it was odd at the absence of non-white people or older people. It didn't dawn on me until later that it was basically a middle class club for white college graduates. We left feeling like we had visited a plastic version of church. I'm sure there are a lot of good dedicated people here, but I just believe that you could find a place that feels more genuine, more diverse, and deeper.

I came to Hosea thinking I was a follower of Jesus. Boy was I wrong. If you want to sit in on a service, listen to feel-good preaching, slip out the back of the building after it's over and avoid talking to people just to check off your cultural Christian box so you can feel better about yourself and skirt accountability, Hosea is NOT the place for you. If you're curious about who God is, if you're hurting and need support, if you want to join others in worshipping Jesus, and if you actually want to grow by listening to convicting Bible-based teaching, then Hosea IS the place for you. The people at this church love Jesus, and they're not afraid of showing it. I dare you to come on a Sunday; you won't look back. We also have free donuts and coffee!

On Christmas Eve, I attended the midnight service, and the cathedral was packed all the way out the doors. It was truly beautiful--music, praise, and worship filling the space in a way that stayed with me long after I left. As an active-duty U.S. Navy Diver, life often keeps me far from many of the places that bring peace and reflection. Raleigh has always been one of those places for me. It is not only where I wrote Purple Rose: The Stars Carry Her Name -- Letters from Me to Her, or the city of the woman I wrote the book to, but also a city where I have found moments of calm, purpose, and kindness. Though my time at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral has been limited, whenever I go, I am always met with warmth. It is a beautiful place, and one I look forward to visiting again. JamesVThePoet.com

I came to Mass at 10:30am when many children were getting their first Holy Communion. Monsignor Brachman was the celebrant and treated the children so well; assuring they knew exactly what was about to happen. The building itself is incredibly done and the music was exceptional. Going to a mass here is truly an experience. I will definitely attend mass here more and more.

And... it's that warm, genuine welcome - along with repeated invitations to grow and to stretch my faith -- that have kept me coming back for more than two decades. Edenton Street UMC Sunday morning services include a mix of Scripture, prayer, song, Communion, and thought-provoking messages. I'd suggest that blending those Sunday worship experiences with ongoing opportunities to build community and connection - everything from Sunday school classes and small groups to local missions projects and active support for community partners - is the "secret sauce" that makes Edenton Street church life both fun and engaging. A friend in my small group says it best: "At Edenton Street, we show up for each other." I couldn't agree more. From births and baptisms to confirmations, weddings, milestone birthdays, or the passing of saints, our Edenton Street UMC family shows up for each other for the mountaintop moments, as well as the valley experiences. If you are looking for a church home that is focused on a genuine love for Jesus and on sharing that love with friends and neighbors near and far, I encourage you to visit Edenton Street UMC. My hope is that - just like at the Communion table - you'll "taste and see that it is good."

Edenton Street UMC has something for everyone - an amazing children's program (Sunday School,…read moremusic, Bible School, Camp Shalom), incredible youth program, adult education, local and global service engagement opportunities, LGBTQ community and a thriving senior ministry. It has embraced my children, 80 year-old mother, and me with warmth and opportunities for growth in my faith.
