Beautiful area with a lot of hiking trails. One or 2 are easy but the rest will be more difficult. We had my parents with us so we did the easy Homestead Trail and walked from the homestead to the viewing platform and back. Then we drove around a little and found parking areas at campsites close to the river so we could get other views. The ranger did tell us that we could get more places if we had 4WD. We stayed mostly in the middle and lower sections. I wish we'd gone at night for the night sky but wasn't aware of it at the time and needed to move on to our next destination. We will be back in the future to enjoy more of the river and the park. read more

I finally made it to the Ozarks in AR! It had long been on my bucket list for years but now it's gone from it. And today, I'm writing this review solely based on the drive down to Triple (aka Twin) Falls. If you are not into a long hike (2 miles+ one way), then this is definitely the one for you. To see the waterfall, you'll only need to take a very short hike from the trailhead (although driving down there is very winding and steep so there is even a road sign that says, "Cool your brakes" on the way.) Going back to the hike part, if you want to go up to the top of the waterfall however, you'll need to hike another 0.25 miles from the bottom but it's definitely doable even if you absolutely hate to hike/walk! The exact date of the hike was today (Wednesday, April 20, 2022). It had been raining on and off all day so the trail was muddy. But in my opinion, the rain made the whole experience so mystic, mysterious, and very green with abundance of water spouting out from the top of it. The water was, surprisingly, not so muddy. We took the time to explore the area for at least an 1.5 hours. Interestingly, not a single soul came and went during the whole duration of our visit; we had the whole area to ourselves. The area was so picturesque. It's definitely a great place for a meditation to empty your mind. You'll also have so many spots to take beautiful pictures from so many different angles. A beautiful wild river in the heart of Arkansas. This river remains undamaged by man, it has not been dammed and runs freely. As a result, if you plan on paddling down the river make sure you check rainfall and water levels. It is 151 miles long and it is possible to paddle and camp along the river where ever you find a place! We canoed Tyler's Bend to Gilbert, about 5 miles. When the water is low, this portion of the river is great for beginners and for taking small children (we took our 2 year old). When the water is in the lower side you might drag on the river floor in places. There are several deeper areas to swim and even a place to jump off the rocks! The water is clear and beautiful and you'll pass many tall bluffs. read more

Truly an undiscovered gem in America. My very favorite place in Arkansas. I live in Oklahoma 3 hours away and hike, camp, float here about 8 times a year on average. Get out and see it. Giving the Buffalo National River only 3 stars probably isn't fair. Most people who go probably go to kayak, raft or canoe. I went to hike. I went to the website and printed off a few different trails that are connected to the Buffalo River National Park system. The website could give better details, more on that soon. Note: There are several different outlets and trails along the river. It goes in and out of public and private land over a 37 miles area. So it's the 4th of July and I want to hike, be one with nature, you know be all 'murican and stuff. 1st stop Hawksbill Crag. Getting to the trailhead is half the battle. Finding it is almost impossible as it's 6 miles up an UNMARKED road. Why is it unmarked if it's part of the National Park system??? Well the website does say it's on a gravel road. They don't say it's on a loose, narrow gravel road with rocks bigger than my girlfriends tires in the road itself. She damn near had a heart attack on the way there. Once we got there it was a nice 1.5 mile hike to a gorgeous cliff...errr crag. Look up crag kids, you'll learn something. The view was totally worth the crazy drive up the mountain and then back down. The next stop we made was at Triple Falls. Again another unmarked gravel road. This one worse than the previous. I think I came close to going back on the market as a single dude after we drove to this one. The road was very loose gravel and hige boulder that we had to take her little 4 cylander car down. The website said NOTHING about this. The directions said NOTHING about this. However about halfway down there was a sign that said "4 wheel drive vehicles recommended beyond this point". The lady friend said I should turn around. Impossible! The road wasn't wide enough so we were committed. Oh did I mention I missed the turn so we ended up in Kyle's Landing and had to back to the Boy Scout camp and go down another crappy road. She wasn't speaking to me at this point. lol. The short hike to the Twin Falls(It's called Triple Falls when the river is high and the falls fall in 3 places. We saw 2.3 falls) was ok. We took the pictures and then played slide up the mountain in her slightly larger than SmartCar. I though it was fun, she not so much. The area is gorgeous but getting to it can be a challenge depending on your vehicle. I think they could do a much better job with signs and their website directions. read more

Spectacular river. Hands-down the most beautiful river paddling trip I've ever done. The river is mostly flatwater (a few rapids and riffles that could barely be considered Class I rapids), which makes for a great multi-day camping trip. The bluffs are gorgeous, you can camp anywhere you like by the side of the river in the park (no permits needed, nor do you need to restrict yourself to designated campgrounds -- just practice Leave No Trace camping). Lots of fun swimming holes along the way. The whole river is gorgeous, but my favorite part is the upper river. I advise putting in at Ponca Low-Water bridge and paddling at least to Pruitt (about 30 miles / three days) -- farther, if time permits. Your main concern will be river levels. Late May onward, the water levels in the upper river become iffy. Late April/early May is a good time to go. The weather will be warm, and the river levels will likely still be good. If you're on the academic calendar, this would be an awesome spring break trip. I recommend buying the National Geographic Buffalo River maps (river west and river east), as well as the Buffalo River Handbook by Kenneth Smith. Lots of good information there. The maps are waterproof, but the guidebook is not. Xerox the relevant pages for your run beforehand and have them laminated. read more

Absolutely pristine and beautiful river and countryside. We were unable to float the river this trip but did spend two nights in the Tyler Bend Campground. Dry camping only but a very clean and nice restroom facility with hot showers. Very nice Visitors Center and interesting 18 minutes film on the Buffalo River. Very much enjoyed our stay and looking forward to returning when we can float the river. read more

We love this river we float it, fish in it and hike it. We float this river every year for a couple of days or 10. If you like to float with other people float Ponca down to Pruitt. After Pruitt hardly anybody floats it that is what we enjoy. read more
