It is probably my second favorite mural in Lexington, but it's one that's easy to miss. It's on Limestone a few blocks away from Greyline Station, but in an alleyway between the second-hand shop and some salons. If like me you like to hunt for murals, this is one you'll want to be sure to stop and take a look at.

Of all of the murals in Lexington, this one was the most controversial. It's located on the outside…read moreof one of the outside walls of the an old warehouse in the distillery district. That "old" warehouse is now home of several the James Pepper Distillery District businesses. Specifically the building that is the home of Fusion Brewery and Battle Axes. When it was first painted, back in 2015 there were only two businesses open in the entire district. And as cool as the area is now, I know that this bad ass mural was part of that growth, for the good. So why was it so controversial? You know those kind of people who like to complain about everything, yeah those are who made it controversial. Although it's a self portrait of sorts, in the mural, he's spelling "Mo" with his hands. NOT a gang sign. I'm serious, people were saying that it was going to cause gang related behavior, and encourage graffiti. Now, I wonder what all those naysayers say about it after how far the district has come along in just a few short years. It's literally one of the most booming areas in Lexington. Every year they host artists from near and far, to create these spectacular, gigantic forms of street art. Art unlike you'll find a collection in no one city, other than in Lexington, KY.

This piece is one of many small to medium sized sidewalk sculptures within easy walking distance of historic downtown Frankfort. This may be my favorite public art piece in the area for many reasons. One I love bourbon, two it pays homage to the Kentucky rooted and three it's a genuine mike marker for every single distillery in the state. In the same vein that you see signposts showing the mileage distance to the next major cities this metal signpost has a plethora of signs showing off the states rich and plentiful bourbon distillery history. Overall a very fun, informative and cool piece of actual road signage. A good photo op for locals and out of towhees and a good road map for people ready to experience the bourbon trail.

The statue honors Squire Boone, who played a big role in establishing early settlements in Shelby County back in the late 1700s, including one of the first permanent stations in the area. The statue itself is solid and well done, and it's cool seeing a piece of local history recognized like that. It's also in a noticeable spot, so you'll probably pass it without even trying if you're heading through Shelbyville. That said, there's not a whole lot to do there beyond stopping, looking, and maybe reading up on the history. It's a quick visit more of a "pull over for a few minutes" type of place than a destination. Overall, I'd give it 3 stars. It's meaningful and worth seeing once, especially if you appreciate Kentucky history, but it's pretty limited in terms of what you can actually do while you're there.

Instead, it is his brother who visited in 1780 when Boone visited and painted his name on a rock as part of scouting and claiming the area. Back then, it was Squire Boone's Station and was the first large settlement in present-day Shelby County and counted Capt. Robert Tyler among its residents. There is a bench here, inscribed with a quote. "I set and sing my souls salvation and bless the God of my creation." [Review 20329 overall - 240 in Kentucky - 1307 of 2023.]
