It's a bit of a conundrum deciding where to take a first-time visiting foreigner out to eat and introduce them to Filipino food. Do you take them somewhere upscale and innovative, like a fusion restaurant? Or somewhere a little more authentic and "real"?
Buddy's was walking distance from the Tune Hotel along Timog, and my friend and I figured it was cheap, so we took our Indonesian friends there for an uncomplicated Filipino dinner. I was always curious about what it was. since it had such festive, kitschy appeal.
We ordered rice meals, because what is a Filipino meal without rice, right? We had sisig, longanisa, and tapa, which were fine. Good, but nothing to write home about. Given the prices, it's a pretty fair dinner all in all, though maybe you could have a better, similar meal elsewhere, especially as an introduction to foreigners. They weren't so impressed by the food either. 'Twas okay.
I guess we didn't catch on that their pancit was something they specialize in. Maybe next time? read more
