Sushi in St Thomas. 10/10. All sushi is fresh and very good. We are from Atlanta and this is top notch.

Super good but SUPER SLOW service also very expensive. The food is excellent but prepare yourself for a 3 hour dinner. I am not sure why it takes so long as it has never been busy when I've gone. I would 11/10 recommend the oyster appetizer- so freaking good. Their presentations are nice with the sauce writing for the name of the sushi rolls. Fish tastes very fresh. They have a large menu so everyone can find something they like. Staff is also very nice just need to figure out how to make their service faster!!!!! read more

This is our go to spot for sushi every visit because you get good food, it's authentic, and it's seldom packed with tourists so you don't get that annoyance and prices are pretty straightforward. We visited during the pandemic around 7pm, they were really good about having us sign in and sanitize as well as scanning a QR code for a menu. We sat near the sushi bar area which gave us an opportunity to chat with Chef Taj who is the brainchild behind many of the scrumptious items on the menu. He's very personable and it's a pleasure chatting with him. I didn't catch our servers name but he was very "zen like" best way to describe it, soft spoken, calm - I reminded myself to take some notes and that. He had a very calm demeanor. Okay so now the food will not disappoint! I am pregnant and was bummed about missing out on raw sushi but the menu is well rounded and coded with cooked rolls/food, raw as well as vegan options. Chef Taj let us know about a special buy one get one half off spicy tuna so my husband added that to his order. We did start with the mussels which came recommended by Chef Taj, they are four huge ones the mussels are cooked and chopped up topped with Panko and some fabulous sauces. Very delicious! And the also found out that he used his fireworks roll sauce (it's a roll we didn't get it this time but have had it in the past) on wings and won some contests so he added that to the menu - they were very yummy. I tasted a blend of peanut and chili among some other secret things I'm sure he mixed in. For our "main course" we shared the eel lovers which had eel sashimi (two sliced seared eel pieces that just melted in your mouth), eel nigiri, and two eel rolls one was a caterpillar and one was with shrimp tempura. It was all so good - and Chef Taj brought out a couple of sauces, I can't remember what one of them was but the Rock City sauce was phenomenal. Calm quiet atmosphere. Very red toned and pretty inside. Food was absolutely delicious, I got the red dragon roll and I would go as far to say it was the best sushi I've ever had! All sushi was insanely fresh. The sauce on the spicy edamame was decadent and the staff was lovely. Love taj! i had seen about this restaurant before coming, but i was a little disappointed. As soon as you enter, you already smell a not very pleasant smell, the bathroom looks like it was cleaned a while ago, the problem is that it's not just the food that makes a good restaurant, it needs to smell clean, so it doesn't do any good if the chef is the best in sushi, but if his entire team doesn't strive to have a clean, pleasant environment. these 3 stars are just for the sushi, which was the best I've eaten so far. My husband and I came to Buddah Sushi while on our honeymoon in VI. Our taste buds were instantly in love, I felt like our taste buds were on crack we could not stop eating the food was so delicious. For starters we had their award winning wings, wow we loved them. Then had their dumplings. Again delish. If my husband could, he would drink the sauce with the dumplings because he loved it. For dinner. We ordered the volcano, fire snapper and firework. When we come back in the future, we will try their "Smooth, criminal" unfortunately, we just didn't have enough room. Taj, their MasterChef infused the best flavors into everything we ate. He is so talented and everything was OUTSTANDING. We are sushi eaters at heart and this place blew our minds!!! When we go home we will remember this place as VI's best of the best. The BEST dinner hands down. Another thing we had was their mussels the most mouthwatering mussels we've ever had we literally have never had anything like it. It was so delicious. Taj educated us on their sake they have premium top-of-the-line sake nothing we've ever had before, but we are definitely sold, and my husband can now get rid of his negative experience with sake. Our new favorite is plum sake a game changer. Check it out!! Lastly, for dessert we had their sorbet trio. We had watermelon, Tamarindo, and dragon fruit. It was perfect not too filling and every flavor was refreshing and fulfilling. Just an overall pleasant experience where we felt treated like royalty. We are ordinary people celebrating our honeymoon and this place treats everyone with the upmost respect. I highly recommend anyone and everyone to try them out. You will not be disappointed. We always go when we visit the island (which is at least once or twice a year). It takes time to get your food but the chef Taj creates the best sushi we have had anywhere. The plating is great but the taste is unreal! We typically get the volcano roll and smooth criminal amongst several others (cooked, raw and vegetarian). Better than great! My family has been visiting St. Thomas for over twenty years and we have never gone to Buddha Sushi, our loss. My wife is a sushi person and me not so much, but there is something here for everyone - tempura, sushi rolls with raw or perfectly cooked seafood in startlingly yummie combinations. My parents and I went here to try their sushi. We waited for 90 minutes before starting to receive our food. The dishes were served 20 minutes apart from each other. The manager came over to serve one of them and apologized briefly but blamed the wait on the fact that all the food is made to order. So is every other restaurant I have been to. She said that the last roll would be 5 more minutes...15 passed...and we called the manger over. She then turned around and sent the waitress to us. The only one that was apologetic and understanding was the waitress. The fish in the sushi was flavorless and not worth the wait. read more

A couple things about this place.... 1. Mediocre sushi 2. Overpriced (even for STT) 3. Sloooooow (we were one of two tables in the whole place) 4. Auto-gratuity of 20% Hate bagging on places, but if you're going to be pricey and slow have the sushi quality to back it up. We ordered Escolar (white tuna) sashimi at a cool $8.50/2 slivers and it was fishy tasting and lacked the buttery flavor Escolar is known for, which means it wasn't fresh. Rainbow Roll was just average. I will say the Salt Fish Roll was probably the best out of anything we had. Nice job there. Auto gratuity of 20% for four people?? Come on! I guess this is why it's slow because they know they're getting 20% no matter what. Lame. We wanted to give this place a shot, but will never return. Really disappointing experience here. Called ahead and made a reservation. Arrived and they acted as if they had no idea, super unorganized staff. They must've given our table away because they sent us (didn't walk us over) in a corner with a tiny 3 top so we had to pull over another table since there were 5 of us. They didn't have enough menus to give us which was sort of absurd. We ordered and after ONE HOUR we didn't get our appetizers! We had to go and retrieve our own drinks because they never came. When we were finally fed up with not getting our food we asked what the deal was with the Sushi and they said that the guy making the Sushi is also running back to the kitchen to cook food. So ridiculous. All we ultimately received was cold miso soup, edamame and the strangest tasting pad Thai. Don't go there! read more

This review is long overdue. Buddha is located on East End about 2 miles west of Red Hook. It isn't much to look at from the outside, but inside, it is beautiful. Lots of dark, rich colors. Not gaudy on the Asian decor. Comfy booths. Buddha has a daily sushi happy hour from 5-7pm (or hours similar to that). Half-priced rolls. Needless to say, we were there as my friend informed me that, on St. Thomas, sushi is pricey. I always expect the worst at a new sushi place; however, since I was on an island that was only 13 miles long and 4 miles wide, I figured it didn't take much to get the fish from the sea to my plate. I was not mistaken! Fresh fish all around. Full bar. Super tasty rolls. Easy on the wallet. Friendly service! My favorite roll was the yellowtail and scallion, but there was plenty more rolls from which to choose. For happy hour, there is a separate menu, but the full menu is available. For three adults and one child, we ordered at least a dozen rolls, but spent less than $100 total with tip. A strong 4 stars. In good conscience, I can't give a 5 star "As good as it gets" rating, as I haven't tried the other sushi restaurants on St. Thomas. When I return to do so, Buddha has set the standard. A must try for island natives and visitors! read more

One of my goals while in St Thomas was to have good sushi. Buddha did not disappoint! The service was exceptional, the other people in the restaurant (although not many on a Monday night) were friendly, and the food was tasty. We sat a table near the sushi bar because the bar itself was "reserved". We ordered a seaweed salad which was good, but a bit overpriced, and several rolls. The sushi chefs were fun to watch - so intense. and the outcome was, just as we needed. We took staff recommendations, and were open to trying new things including a hot-house sauce and some fantastic desserts. We'd like to go back next time we are in St Thomas. read more

Chef Taj & staff...... What a wonderful atmosphere! First off, the menu is vast with sushi for the masses. You can choose raw, cooked, and/or vegetarian rolls, with local rolls such as "rock city roll, & saltfish roll. If you're not in the mood for sushi, the entrée selection is also welcoming. My son has the salmon every time, because he said it's the best on the island. If you're a vegetarian, you'll love the Rock City entrée. And for myself, I would recommend my favorite rolls, The Big Buddha & The Taj Mahal. If you've let room for desert, try one of the many local sorbet made in house, or the tempura Chese cake. Chef Taj doesn't disappoint with the bar selections either! There's always a new drink to sample making it difficult for you to have a favorite. This resturant is family friendly, yet it's great for happy hour with your favorite people, or hosting a birthday party. Highly recommended! read more

I am so glad we made it to the buffet at Buddha Sushi. My favorites foods here are the seaweed salad, the tofu (best I've had on island and stateside), the spicy tuna roll, and the miso soups. I'm not sure what Chef Taj is doing to that tofu but I'm hooked!! My friend had the mussels one night and they were amazing. I am working my way through the menu but so far it's been delicious. There are some new takes on the classics but not so far out there that you're left wondering when bacon starting popping up in sushi... Chef Taj was also very approachable and willing to make accommodations for allergies etc... Wonderful experience! read more
