If you want to escape and just think, or meditate, or walk Kuan Yin's labyrinth this is the place to come. A haven in the hills of Lafayette I can't say enough good things about this special place. It's simply beautiful and peaceful. Haven't tried their classes yet as I mainly come to walk the grounds and meditate but I will likely do that next.

I first visited Buddha Gate because there were Kung Fu classes being offered there. Unfortunately, they had just discontinued them, but I fell in love with the peaceful feeling there. Having always been interested in Buddhism, I decided to check out some classes and do a little more than just read about it. I am glad I did. My 7 year old daughter has been going to the children's meditation classes there for the past 3 years and has benefitted greatly from them. There is no pressure or heavy preaching, the way is taught by glowing example. Two thumbs up!

The grounds here are absolutely gorgeous and so well taken care of. Just driving up to this location is enchanting. I decided to come here to take the Level 1 course in learning meditation and Zen Bhuddism. I am learning that meditation is difficult at first and takes time, patience and practice. The introductory courses are two hours long. You start out in the meditation temple and then have a lovely light snack and make your way to a classroom setting. This course is free but open to donations. There is also a children's meditation class on Saturdays that I'm going to take my son to. Great place to build a wholesome and loving community.

The temple was established twelve years ago to serve the needs of the local Thai community. Welcoming all those interested in Theraveda Buddhist practice emphasizing meditation leading to quieting the conceptual mind and following The Buddha's moral precepts. The monks refrain from gainful employment and rely on the generosity of the lay members for food clothing and shelter. In accord with Buddha's advice the monks stop eating after noon each day to relieve the lay community of the need to respond to their food needs for breakfast lunch and dinner. This temple has the loving support of local SE Asian expats as well as Westerners devoted to Buddhist philosophy. If you are interested in this mission please stop by to see for yourself. Morning chanting 6:30 to 7:30 am, Food offering followed by community meal 10:00 am to 12 noon daily, Daily 1:00 to 4:00 pm quiet meditation space, Sunday's 12:30 pm dharma talk (Thai Language). Adults can shop at a couple small booths for trinkets and small goodies. Children's games with prizes are in the lawn area at the back of the Center. Food booths include fire-roasted chicken with rice and cucumber salad and edamame ($8), udon soup ($5), teas and ice cream and sodas ($1-2 ea) and beer, BBQ beef (this was the best) 3 skewers for $6, fried tempura, and gyoza ($5). The lines moved quickly and food is served fast. Tons of tables and chairs are under a shade structure so you can eat and enjoy the cool breeze! The bonsai displays outside are beautiful and the plants are between 15 and 150 years old this year! Inside the Center are beautiful plant/floral displays and calligraphy lessons. There is also a band and dancers that perform. Tonight at 7:30 and tomorrow at 6:30 pm will be a group dance. It's only a couple simple moves and is the traditional Japanese dance to call the spirits of the dead. The event is small but it's very fun. A shuttle from Ygnacio Valley High School will pick you up if you don't want to try to find parking on Treat. It's free to get in too!

The chicken and edamame were delicious. There was a traditional Japanese band that was very fun to listen to. The best part of the event for me was the bonsai competition. Some of the bonsai's were absolutely amazing. Personally I'm 0-2 with bonsai's and I really respect all the work that they put into to making these magnificent works of art.
