There's a lot of really cool things about St Gile's Church. You could talk about the charming and…read moreold but scarcely feeble groundskeeper, whose Welsh accent I could barely understand. You could mention how its tower can be seen from miles away (and in fact, was how the place was accidentally happened upon while I was driving through the UK). You could talk about the fact that it's still standing after 503 years, and served duty as an armory during various wars. You could go see the above-ground resting place of Elihu Yale, whose name is borne by a certain prominent American university. But my personal favorite part is the gravestones scattered around the grounds, many of which have been rendered illegible by moss and erosion, or simply cracked in half by the root system of a nearby tree. Most impressive, and a recommended visit while you're in the northern parts of Wales.

We attempted to get in by going around the entire churchyard, and got scared by a cat and a homeless man. We located the plaque with the hours and discovered the church did not open until 10am. We wandered around the town, and most of the shops were closed: Easter Monday. We used one of the public toilets nearby the church, that appeared not to have been cleaned in years. The stench was atrocious. We went back to the church, only to discover that it was still closest. A lovely older couple came by, and they too were attempting to gain entrance. She informed us that she was born next door to the church; pointed to her home that her grandfather had owned. She continued her story with telling us she married in the church, and all of her children were christened there. She told us about how her daughter, who is now 50, had to be blessed before her mother in-law would allow her into her home. We waited another hour, and no one came to unlock the gates. The older couple told us that it was highly unusual for the church to be closed. I later checked the website, and did not see a reason why the church was closed on a religious holiday.
