This hotel was recommended to us for a pub feed and it didn't disappoint. There was a great atmosphere and live music. The place was packed but there was still plenty of room and great food. Definitely recommend it. read more

A call from the road while heading south one Friday evening luckily scored us the Up and Go room…read more Warm hosts greeted 2 weary travellers at 9.40pm and promptly showed us to a lovely room. The tour of the top floor revealed a large lounge room, kitchen and plenty of tea. Do yourself a favour and check out what's in the biscuit jar. Room was warm, the double bed very comfortable and we both slept very soundly. The decor throughout isn't new looking but everything is very well tended and I found it charming in it's own way. Very true to the familiar 'staying at a friend's parent's house while your friend isn't there' vibe that I love about B&Bs. Hosts Sandra & Darryl were lovely and it seemed almost a shame that we had to get moving and couldn't chat for longer. Very affordable even if just stopping over for the night. Would love to come back another time and stay in the room called Middle Earth. My Tolkien fangirl side is insisting on it!

I had a really great time at this Tavern! My friend and I started with their Fish of the Day…read morespecial for $25 and it was a fish I never tried but really enjoyed. It came with a large portion of fries and a small salad with vinegar dressing. They have a lot of good entertainment here (i.e. pool table, jukebox with amazing selection, and slot machines to gamble.)

We shared the table of an american couple we met in the line up whilst waiting to order. Although it took a while to order it didnt take long for our meal to arrive, I had the chicken schnitzel and although rather large (with I thought too many chips) was absolutley beautiful and quite inexpensive. Dispite the amount of people there we didn't have to wait long at the bar. All the staff were rushed off their feet all night but this didn't seem to effect the service. After dinner we listened to a reggae band "Ragga Jump" who were great. The recent renovations at the tavern are great and I know I'll be returning quite frequently.

In all honestly I'm more than happy with my 5 star review cause there is nothing to fault with this place... I'm thinking that the previous reviewers might be used to the 4 star luxury pub hotels back home in their respected citys lol!! If anyone can find a fault with this 2 star hotel with a single room bed for 1 person with shared bathroom for $27 a night - to a double 2 person room with private bathroom and shower and balcony for $88 a night, pleasd do so. But keep in mind that this is a small town between Grafton & Ballina and that your staying at Pub Hotel not just a hotel :)!! The Bistro had delicous food here aswell, had the fishermans basket myself and was pleased with the outdoor seating area where you could sit down and chill out with a cold beer with the locals :), and everyone says Hello or how are you over here.. a bit like Europe.. am just suprised cause you don't get that from many Sydney siders lol.. All in all I loved my stayed here at Hotel Illawong and on my next visit I won't be staying anywhere else but here :)! !

Harwood Island Hotel

4 stars for the local country pub charm…read more If you're looking for that real country pub experience then look no further than the Harwood Hotel. Situated just under the Harwood Bridge and nestled against the sweeping banks of the Clarence River this local pub in a town of about 400 people is friendly and welcoming in a way that you would only find in country Australia. Whilst it doesn't look like much they have a wonderful pub menu which includes fresh local seafood, steaks and burgers. Their dinner menu is more extensive than their lunch menu but they are only open for dinner from Wednesday - Sunday. The front porch has wonderful views of the river and the bridge which is perfect for a sunny summer's day. The quality of the food is quite good as well, I had salt and pepper squid which was not only fresh (locally caught) but only lightly battered which makes a change from the thick batter that you usually get at pubs. The chips that came with the meal were perfectly cooked, thick cut and crispy. A fun feature of the pub is the pontoon just outside on the river for boat parking, so if you're a local or staying in one of the surrounding towns such as Yamba or Maclean you can take a half hour cruise up the river and park just outside the pub. Perfect for a summer's day!

So my beef is that if you want to impose your own requirements for entry then at least put that on your Facebook page and website. Be upfront. Our group has vaccinated and unvaccinated people and we would not have wasted our time, money and energy going to a place that doesn't allow everyone entry. At least have the balls to put it on your website and fb page. Go to Sanctus Brewing Co they welcome everyone and have great service.

But the hotel has new owners now - an enthusiastic young couple who are really keen to make this business great. The new rooms are awesome, but unfortunately I had to have an older room this stay so I can only review based on that. The $10 breakfast deal is excellent value. When all the rooms are rennovated, this hotel will be superb. The old rooms are really old, and even depressing in a way, but it is very clean and owners with this much enthusiasm should be supported.

Well, fortunately for me I was still able to pop in for a drink, so as to mark off all of the pubs in Grafton as opposed to having one left there hanging like a loose end. I found this place rather pleasant though, particularly since the service was rather good, and they even had some nice beers on tap, which was sort of lacking in other places. This place was actually rather nice, even if it was somewhat quieter than the others.
