We booked a 1:30 time for lunch and had a great table outside on the shady patio on an uncharacteristically warm (88 degrees!) summer day. The menu features lots of choices from burgers to shareable platters. We opted for a cheese platter with local l, some chili roasted almonds and the baked Bree. It was the perfect lunch. We also enjoyed a glass of the Sauvignon blanc and the sparkling rose with the meal. Following the meal, we stepped up to the tasting area ($5 pp-free with a bottle purchase) and sampled the entirety of their selection from unplanned Rose (last year's fires tainted the skin on the Pinot noir so the winemaker made a switch-delicious) to Sauvignon blanc, Riesling and Pinot noir. Wines were nice quality. While this place is on the bus tour circuit, they kept the larger groups segregated in the back of the large restaurant so we weren't at all impacted. It's worth the drive for the lunch quality alone and a peaceful and relaxing spot.

Being a local, I've sampled most, if not all, of the ciders currently available down here and I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna say it. I'm committing. Ready? Pagan is my favourite Tassie cider. WOW, WHAT A RUSH. OH MAN. Seriously though. I'm a Pagan fan, big time. I'm all about Pagan. Beam me up, Pagan. Are you there, Pagan? It's me, Memily. I'm a fan of many other local ciders (and blatantly not a fan of a couple more) but Pagan tops the list for me. It has no added sugar but is still naturally sweet, it's crisp, it has super cool labels, and it comes in a pretty cool range: currently apple, pear, and two different cherry/apple versions (one with 20% cherry and one with 40% -- this one also has 8% alc/vol so hold onto your butts). But here's the even more fun bit. If you visit Pagan's cellar door on the road into Cygnet, you get to try all these delicious ciders--and also any bonus fun cellar door stuff they might be doing at the time. I've sampled a quince cider, an aged pear cider and I even got a preview for the crazy gin/chocolate/scrumpy medley Pagan came up with in cahoots with Cygneture Chocolate and McHenry's Gin for Dark Mofo 2014's winter feast. Right time, right place. As far as I'm concerned, any time is the right time, and Pagan's cellar door is always, ALWAYS the right place.
