We were in the Ashburn/Leesburg area at the time this happened. When I glanced up I was alarmed to see a police car pulled up behind us with his lights flashing. I was sure I'd made a foolish mistake somehow. I was pleasantly surprised to see that dear officer signal to me that I was OK and he was simply blocking oncoming traffic for us to keep us safe from an accident. I feel so honored to have been assisted and protected in this way even though it was only for a couple of minutes. Thank you for having wonderful police officers. I'm not sure how that works since I was closely following them at 11:00 PM so that *they* would hit the deer in the road and not me. But that's neither here nor there. The first time I've been pulled over in 10 years and I had a clue. Windows down and I already had my wallet out. As the officer came up I had my hands on the steering wheel. As I handed over my drivers license, I also informed him that i was handing over my concealed carry permit and that I was currently carrying. He appreciated the information (West Virginia does not have a duty to inform, but it's generally a good idea to let them know) and perhaps that - and my clean driving record - earned me a warning instead of a speeding ticket. All very professional and I feel extremely warned. Dammit, I was definitely speeding but I did not see the speed limit sign until the next day when I circled back to check it out. The warning form only had "Valley Road" and the city with no address. As Valley Road continues for a while and has a spectrum of speed limits, I think I could maybe have tried to fight a ticket, but this was a warning and so be it. Well done, WVSP. They had made visible purchases. After a few minutes they were approached by a woman in some sort of authority (no ID, name take or Starbucks apron). She was met by a security guard and the young men were told to leave or the police were coming. They had done nothing wrong or offensive. Two white police officers arrived and did not ask the teens any questions and immediately brought out papers for the teens to sign that would ban them from Starbucks and another store. For a year. The manager (authority) when I asked, stayed that this action related to a previous incident. These kids were not being rowdy, offensive or disrespectful in any way shape or form. I am appalled. This is not my expectation. No parental notification. No listening to the kids. Assumed the kids were problems and acted accordingly and did not listen to anything related to the totally acceptable behavior of the group. I expect this in Arizona. Not in Rockville.
