This mural commemorates the Year of the Dragon & Bruce Lee (Li XiaoLung-little dragon) born in 1940 in S. F. Chinatown.
His family moved back to H.K. There he studied many styles of Chinese kung fu. In 1959 Lee moved to Seattle, open a martial arts class. Soon after a 2d school opened in Oakland, Ca.
In 1964, Lee demostrated his "Jeet Kune Do", an hybrid martial art he created, at Long Beach International Karate Championships. Following rave reviews, he moved his school to L.A. teaching celebrities & top Karate artists.
Soon, Lee was featured as Kato, a crime fighter associate of Green Hornet on TV. He had to wear a black mask as Lee looked too "Oriental".
Hollywood only casted white men in "yellowface" when "Orientals" were needed.
Lee worked with an agent to cast him in the leading role about a Chinese martial artists roaming the wild west. Hollywood casted David Carradine who had no martial arts knowledge as Kwai Chai Caine in "Kung Fu".
Bruce Lee went to H.K. To create kung fu thrillers:
"The Big Boss" & "Fists of Fury" which were wildly successful. Before "Enter the Dragon" was released, Bruce Lee died from celebral edema on 7/20/1973.
Bruce Lee is credited with bringing real martial arts creed to the movies, no more make believe martial arts. Hollywood only allowed Asians to protray martial artists. Otherwise they had the usual villain roles, "hop sings", caricatures, the usual sterotypes.
Hollywood didn't change until Crazy Rich Asians hit the big screen. read more
