More than 10 years ago, I retired as a Director of Product Development for a polymer company and…read moreone of my neighbors, who used to volunteer as a provider for the RI Free Clinic, asked me if I would be interested in volunteering as an interpreter for the Free Clinic since I spoke Spanish. My background as a Chemical Engineer made it easy to interpret Chemistry and Biology terms during the patient's visits. That was over 8 years ago and during all that time, I have not only served as a Spanish interpreter, but also as an Eligibility Screener. I have enjoyed working at the Clinic because all the people involved have a great heart and everyone at the Clinic has the same goal, to help the underserved and the underprivileged in Rhode Island. I remember interpreting for a female Social Work patient years back, that felt so comfortable with me that she asked the therapist to set up her appointments whenever I was volunteering. During those sessions, she opened up tremendously about her life struggles and the Social Work sessions ended up helping her to cope with her past and to help her face a more certain future. I have also interpreted for patients that started with AIC values in the 14-15 range and that have improved their diabetes and sugar levels by proper diet, nutrition, exercise and medicine. The improvement of health statistics is very common at the Free Clinic due to the care of our providers, nurses and specialists. I am very proud to be part of such an amazing non profit that does so much for the underpriviledged in Rhode Island.

This review is specifically for the W&I Bone Health program aka Dex a Scan…read more An appointment was scheduled by phone and a date given within a weeks time. That was excellent. It was requested that I not take any calcium for a few days leading up to the test and to wear clothing without metal. I also needed to bring a referral. No scans without a referral. The building has it's own private parking lot, which is excellent as parking around the hospital is dear. The office is down one level, first door on the right. An elevator is available if needed. I checked-in and had a seat in the large waiting area. The building has no public restrooms, but a private one is available behind the clinic door if needed. Before my test I was weighed and measured. Stand up tall! The patient lays on their back, on a hard table. The radiologst goes into the next room to run the scan. The table can be moved remotely to get the correct body position. After one round of images, my feet were strapped to a small plastic form to keep my toes turned in and another round of films taken. After that, images of my wrist were taken. And that's it. No disrobing needed as I wore no metal. Reports are accessed through their online patient portal. The total appointment took about 30 minutes from check-in to driving away. DexA Scans are not covered by hospital financial aid.

Hubby is active duty but his doctor referred him to the lifespan cardiac center to get a monitor…read moreput on for about a month to track his ticker. This was precovid, and things were still pretty chill before the pandemic started. Our first appointment was mostly just a meet and greet to talk about how things would go and what to expect with the monitor. The monitor was placed on him and the cardiac tech was very sweet in walking us through every specific about the pads, the monitor itself, problem-solving, and reporting issues. Ultimately the monitor that they gave us broke and we had to come back and get it replaced. After that, the unit that we got was running through a batteries because there was some malfunction and we had to return for more batteries multiple times. After the initial installation of the pack, they weren't super friendly after that but that also could have been because things were finally starting with the pandemic and everyone was nervous. The location is many floors up on the Rhode Island hospital ambulatory Care building, which is a little bit difficult to get to and involves checking in downstairs and making your way up. Additionally, parking on this side of the building is pretty chaotic and multiple times resulted in multiple tickets for us to pay for parking and sometimes they gave us vouchers for that to be free and sometimes they didn't. Overall we're glad he got the test done and his ticker is in good shape but it was quite a lot of work to get it and was always exhausting to make it in and out of the Rhode Island hospital complex.
