That's probably mostly because it's a pain in the ass to find a new family physician though... As a teenager, I had frequent bouts of strep throat, but never the kind that was detected by the rapid swab tests. Even though this became apparent rather quickly, I can't tell you the number of times I had to make numerous trips to Dr. Farber's office when my rapid tests would come back negative and he would tell me it wasn't strep, yet a few days later, the symptoms persisted. I will give their office props for one thing, though: Shortly after I graduated college and was unemployed with no health insurance, I broke my foot. Since I was an established patient at the office, they worked with me to charge me a minimal amount for my visit and they also worked out a deal with the imaging center where I had my x-ray. I was so grateful not to have to worry about being able to afford getting care for my foot and they took excellent care of me. So, while he might not be the sharpest crayon in the medical box, Dr. Farber is a great guy, and he does look out for his patients.

Now he is very flexible when seeing me for issues or just a simple question. The time spent with me was so much more detailed and meaningful. Although there was a charge initially for the first 4 years I felt my health was worth it in the long run. I feel he is great at listening and even better in his care and ethics.

What I hate about this practice is the lack of time spent on patient care when the Dr comes in. 5-8 min tops on patient care. They love to push consults to other physicians. They don't really explain much other than giving a vague answer. Left and went to another dr at another practice after 3 years as a patient. Just couldn't take the lack of care when I had legitimate concerns. New dr is fantastic, spent a whole 1.5 hours with me. Felt cared about. Sadly, I find that I have had high LDL cholesterol and that was reading old practice blood work from before I left. Never was told, along with a few other diagnosis that were not conveyed. Which quite frankly is very disturbing.

I presented my insurance card and was assured by staff that my procedure would be covered. I have been notified that Dr Katz was out of my network for at least a month prior to my appointment. I am now on the hook for hundreds of dollars on something that should have been covered mostly if not all by the ACA. My appointment was preventive and had I known I'd be charged, I would have canceled and found a different doctor. Always be sure to call your insurance prior to any doctor appointments. I've learned the websites aren't always up to date and the office staff can mislead you.

I also must say her staff are stellar too -- the administrative assistant is very good about returning calls or messages, and her nurse is so sweet and helpful. While an annual exam isn't something I think anyone exactly looks forward to, I'll say that going here is such a non-ordeal I really don't mind it at all. And it turns out that a couple of my friends go to her as well - they're as big fans as I am.
