Entrance to The Hallandale Beach Branch Library
    Jo H.

The Hallandale Beach Branch Library is big and has many seating areas for you to sit down and relax. By the entrance, there are books in a cart going for sale. The children's area is a medium sized room across from the check out desk. It has four computers, which the kids can reserve 2 sixty minute sessions. To the right of the information desk are fifteen computers where you can reserve 2 sixty minute sessions. There are also two express computers to reserve 2 fifteen minute sessions and two computers with scanners to reserve 2 thirty minute sessions. There are rows and rows of shelves filled with fiction and non-fiction books of different genres, audio books, CD's, and DVD's. There is small section for the young adult (teens). At the Hallandale Beach Branch Library, you can check out video games for different consoles such as XBOX, XBOX 360, XBOX ONE, PS2, PS3, Wii, and Wii - U. They have a few games for PS4. Plenty of parking around this library, the staff are very helpful & nice, and it's right across the street from Gulfstream Park. I like coming here often.

    Not one Agatha Christie book

I wanted to kill a hour or so and upon entering the library person (she certainly wasn't a librarian) asked for money. I thought the entire concept of libraries in the United States was that they were free. Oh no, not in Broward County. They demanded ready cash and said they do not accept credit cards; outrageous. I thought perhaps an Agatha Christie who was made a Dame and known as Lady Mallowan. The DBE was conferred upon her by Queen Elizabeth II. In addition, the Guinness Book of World Records lists Christie as the best-selling novelist of all time. Her novels have sold roughly 2 billion copies, and her estate claims that her works come third in the rankings of the world's most-widely published books, behind only Shakespeare's works and the Bible. According to Index Translationum, she remains the most-translated individual author, having been translated into at least 103 languages. And Then There Were None is Christie's best-selling novel, with 100 million sales to date, making it the world's best-selling mystery ever, and one of the best-selling books of all time. These so called librarians did not have a single copy of any book she had written. I was aghast and so disappointed with this County which I know to be corrupt but also moronic as well. I pity the poor school children who will miss one of the world's greatest experiences; curling up with the words of a genius. Before I go I shall ask if they have any Shakespeare. I doubt they do.

    They certainly should be

The library is small and extremely loud. The staff does nothing to curb loud talking/shouting. Not a good place to study or quietly read.

Excellent service! I live in Kendall and was looking for a book that the system indicated was available only at this location. To confirm--and avoid making the trip for nothing--we called ahead and were assisted by Paul. With great patience and kindness, he informed us that the book was currently on hold, but offered to check if he could locate another copy. The call got disconnected, but Paul called us right back to let us know that the book was on a waiting list. Paul was very helpful and suggested that I download the online version instead.

It's a gorgeous library with a very clean and modern vibe. It's only one level and has more tables and chairs for sitting and study areas than they have books. Haha. Regardless, it's a beautiful space with tons of natural lighting and super spacious. There is a children's book area all the way in the back of the library too. The librarians here are very nice and helpful. I snagged two books from the small book sale area in the corner upon entry. Cost is $2 for hardcovers and $1 for paperbacks. Please keep in mind they only accept cash.

When I had follow up questions, she responded condescendingly, as if I should already know. The other lady I interacted with also at the front desk I guess wasn't as rude but just seemed bothered with my son. He was next to me just looking around and sort of walking, not making any noise or even speaking she quickly told him to stay still because this wasn't a place to walk? I've also been for the children's programs they have two, one on Mondays for smaller children up until three years old and then they have one on Wednesdays for children three till five I believe. The one on Wednesday was terrible they put the children in a tiny room with barely any space and all they do is give them a piece of paper to color and that's pretty much it. The gentleman who was in charge was very kind though, complete opposite from the staff upfront. I'll never understand why people who hate customer service decide to work at front desks...

I was on a look out for a quiet place where I could work with better internet connectivity. Unfortunately this is second such spot where it was difficult to find an internet connection expect for a hard two bar connection. Later, I realised that it had to do with my laptop which was quite old and had just 2.5 ghz of wifi connectivity. Whereas, nowadays it's all about 5 ghz. So, my bad! I would definitely recommend this place and do not go for the sign boards at the parking as anyone wishing to spend time at this library has the privilege to park your vehicle for free of cost. This library is well arranged as all the furniture's are aesthetically placed based on user requirements. They do have small kiosks for working or studying in groups too. The library management system in this country is thumbs up!

When you come to this library, you have to park in the parking garage reserved for library patrons and city hall officials. Once I walked in I could see the whole layout of the library, so it's small and compact just like Carver Ranches Library, but this location was much more comfortable. I also saw a familiar face at the information/check-out desk that used to work at the Hallandale Beach Branch Library. There are adequate seating throughout the library where you can relax and charge your electronic device. There's a large selection of books of various genres, audio books, CDs, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, and reserved computers. The children's area is in the back of the library with a few reserved computers. I didn't stay long, but I assume the staff are helpful and nice. I did notice that they have some interesting book selections so I will definitely come back on my off day and check them out.

The only thing you would have to worry about is the $1.00 fine they charge each day for each item that is overdue. I like the fact with having a library account, I can go on the website and check out any new book, CD, and DVD release. If the Hollywood branch does not have the item I want, I can put the item on hold and if there's a copy of that item available at any other Broward library, it will be sent to the library of my choice for pickup. There is no limit on the amount of books or CD's to borrow (2-3 weeks), but if you want to borrow DVD's, the limit is 10 (1 week). Besides borrowing books, CD's, and DVD's, the library also provides bus passes, faxes, copying and printing (15 cents each). They have four sections of computers for adults, teens, and young children. You have to first reserve a computer, which gives you a 60 minute session. You can only reserve a computer twice, which sucks cause I normally spend more than two hours on the internet. If you're smart, you'll walk in with your laptop and use the library's free Wi-Fi. There are also four 15 minute computers that needs no reservation for people who want to go on the internet for minor, quick things like check their email, a quick tweet, print, or download, or just check their facebook page. The noise level in the facility is usually quiet until after 2pm. That's when the school children arrives and then it becomes noisy. The staff are very friendly and are willing to answer any questions you have. It's like my little sanctuary away from home.

And I know this because until quite recently, I was a fourth degree dunderhead myself. You see, I buy e-books from Amazon to download on a Kindle, pay for a Netflix subscription, occasionally download an audiobook from audible.com, and every now and then buy a magazine for a beach day. What a fool I've been! All these services are available free of charge from my local library. I've been Amazon "one-clicking" away so much cash I should have been saving instead! I was reading on my Kindle last Saturday and was about to pull the trigger on a new book, but I paused with my finger over the button, "$12.99 for a popular book written more than 10 years ago? No, I can pick this up at the library later." So, I popped into North Miami Public Library that very afternoon. It had been so long since my last visit that my card needed to be updated. It was a quick process with no line and no waiting. The librarian was super kind and knowledgeable. She handed over the brochure in the attached photo and explained access to free e-books, audiobooks, streaming video, and magazines using apps on the phone or tablet and my library card number. On the way home, I had to stop for an errand and was confronted by a long line. I passed the time by pulling out the brochure and library card. By the time it was my turn at checkout, I had downloaded the "over drive" app and borrowed my first free e-book. A snap! So, DON'T BE A DUNDERHEAD. Stop paying for things that are available to you at your lovely local library. Stop in today!
