This hospital used to be known as "Grace Hospital." It is now known as "UNC Health Blue Ridge." I…read moreremember passing by it when I was younger, and also knew friends that had been born here, but never had been inside or had to utilize their services until yesterday when my husband was transported here via ambulance and admitted overnight. I was actually surprised at how beautiful the interior of this hospital is, how cozy, how- large! It is definitely well kept up. My husband's stay was incredible. From the moment he got a room, the nurses welcomed me, and even told me to stay with him all night. They offered me a guest meal to eat with him, and told me I could even shower if I needed to! I almost felt like I was the patient too! The staff as a whole are really welcoming, full of love and southern hospitality- as they should be. Sadly a lot of hospitals lack staff who deliver top quality and compassionate care. When we left today, my husband and I officially decided that we will be choosing this hospital when I give birth. Catawba and Frye have absolutely nothing on the comfort and care that this hospital does. I never planned on going back to either one of those wretched places, but after this experience, THIS will be our GO TO hospital for any procedures, emergencies, (or babies!) I speak so highly specifically of the top notch care he received from the nurses. However, there are only 4 stars posted here for a reason because just like any other medical establishment, I do have a few negatives I'd like to mention as well.... Communication. Communication issues between the rotating staff, communication issues between the doctors and the nurses, and communication between the patients and the staff. 1. Rotating staff. After every shift was over, the next nurse to come in wasn't always given a "summary" of what they needed to do, and some kind of seemed lost. I feel like the team leaving to go home should be leaving notes for the new employees arriving to work, because they do see new patients every day, and that's a bit of an organizational problem. This wasn't a huge issue, but I noticed a little bit of this going on. Nurses acting confused until we, the patients, updated them. 2. Doctors. The doctors do not communicate unless the nurses reach out to ask. For example, I had already looked at my husband's endoscopy results and bloodwork 2-3 hours before a doctor even spoke with us. I already knew what was wrong. I was never once showed photos, or shown bloodwork or anything. I had to read it myself. My husband went back for his endo, and I was told that when he was in recovery, they'd call me back. They never did. So, when I seen it on the screen that he was in recovery, I asked to go back, and the women behind the desk at the outpatient surgery told me to sit down and wait for the doctor to call me back. They never did! The lady that brought him into pre-op had to come get me from the lobby, and was shocked that nobody told me- MY HUSBAND WAS ALREADY OUT OF RECOVERY AND BACK IN HIS ROOM! This made me so angry, because Turkish is my husband's first language and he prefers to have me with him at all times if possible, just in case I need to translate for him. I explained this to the women behind the desk, and they didn't seem to care. I made it back to his room and he was wide awake wondering where I was that whole time! This was his first "surgery" and he expected to wake up with me next to him. Communication problems. 3. Us. If I didn't have any background knowledge in the medical field, I would have been completely clueless as to what was going on. I was never given test results, I was never given pictures of the endoscopy, I was never explained anything. I had to pull my husbands chart and read / compare his blood results (they were drawing every 6 hours because he had lost a lot of blood and were taking it every 6 hours to make sure that his levels weren't dropping more. We didn't talk to a doctor. I had diagnosed him before any staff member! When they walked in, I said "I already know, even though I know you won't explain it well, I know. Discharge us." If the communication between literally everyone would improve just a bit, I think this place deserves 5 stars! The frustration was with the doctors, not the nurses. The nurses did their best to make everyone comfortable and relay information as I asked. The doctors don't seem to want to listen, and seem as if they already have their own ideas and are set in their ways. At least, the doctors we seen. I say I'd love to deliver here, because I will have a midwife and my OB. A doctor I know and trust, in a relaxing and caring environment. I hope the communication will improve!

This Hospital wants emergency room staff this Hospital should be closed immediately for gross…read moremedical neglect and complete inability to correctly diagnose and treat my problem. I was brought by ambulance after a slip and fall in a Lowe's parking lot in Morganton North Carolina because I could not drive home to Florida I was having double and quadruple vision and falling asleep at the wheel while I was driving. Rather than address the obvious is that I had a severe concussion and should not have been released and most definitely should not be on the road driving anywhere at any time until the symptoms have been treated and cleared up. I was not even spoken to about having a concussion I knew what it was because I have heard about the symptoms although I've never had one but I have also never had the experience of falling asleep at the wheel repeatedly and seeing double and quadruple Vision was complete inability to focus. I had to look up the symptoms on Google because they did not address this at all because the staff did not want to bring it up that there was evidence of a severe blow to the back of my head, the test said everything was normal except a large mass on my right lung which was also ignored, they did nothing to investigate why or advise me even of things to watch for for symptoms of a concussion. To anybody that is medical neglect and incompetence this hospital to be closed immediately if that's the kind of treatment that people have received and indeed from other reviews it's clear that they are not capable of properly diagnosing and treating anyone. I will be following up with North Carolina officials on the closing of this hospital it should not be accepting patients or even testing or treating them. The staff were disrespectful towards me because I don't have a Southern accent and several of them inquired where I was from and although I was born in Jacksonville Florida I was educated up north in New Jersey and New York. I am still having these severe symptoms and it has taken me 3 days To Go less than 200 miles because I have to keep pulling over cuz I'm falling asleep at the wheel because of the concussion. They did not even mention the word there is nothing on my paperwork regarding possibly having had a concussion and do that they should not be open and so-called treating anybody not even a dog. I understand now why they have so many really bad reviews this place is criminal in their treatment, and if I should fall asleep at the wheel and cause an accident they are the direct cause because I should never have been released in that condition that I am in. I have never ever witnessed this level of severe medical incompetent and outright neglect of addressing a real problem. My time spent there was a complete and utter waste of time and money do not go anywhere near this facility, they should be locked up for criminal neglect and complete incompetence. If I could give this so-called Hospital emergency room negative 100 Stars that's what they deserve. The only way they could improve is to completely replace all the neglectful ending confidence staff members every one of them. The doctor did not even identify herself as the doctor, and it was obvious she did not graduate anyone near the top of her class. To have released me a patient to be driving on the highways back to Florida knowing full well themselves that I had received a concussion from the severe fall I had is 100% a criminal act. I can't say enough bad things about the treatment or lack of treatment I received there. They were trying to cover their butts by saying every test was normal oh but by the way miss, you have a large mass on your right lung. There was absolutely no follow-up testing to find out why, all I know is that my entire right side of my rib cage is hurting so bad and they did not even treat the pain they were completely useless, neglectful, and completely and utterly incompetent they should not be open to the public at all. The large mass on my right lung, it could have been blood bleed, it could have been cancer. But I do know that that large mass was not on there a week ago because I had just had a chest x-ray in preparation for Planned surgery in May. They told me about it but they did nothing and I do mean nothing to investigate or do any testing any further and as far as I am aware it could still be bleeding. Medical malpractice does not describe the lack of care I received there not even close

They allow people in the hot tub without showering off, there is, in fact, no signage to this effect until they have already passed the showers and entered the pool area. Thought rinsing off would be a given but not so. There is not enough equip. unless you are a weightlifter and it's often hard to get a machine because there are so few ( except treadmill ). They often don't replace the wipes in a timely fashion tho they have little signs that say "don't forget". Some may say the pool is heated, I contest that ( and no, they do not have towells) but do have plenty of lockers. Staff is friendly enough, but any discussion you might try to have with managemnt about a concern will end with them becoming arbitrary. ( defined by Webster as, " decisive, yet unreasoned." Or, because I say so. I've gotten myself shaped up but I'd rather take my money, get a modest elliptical and hang a heavy bag in the cellar. A search indicated a pool/workout area within the Phifer Wellness Center. After a lunch at Moon Dog Pizza, I drove over to check out the Wellness Center, adjacent to Grace Hospital in Morganton. The Drexel Heritage Aquatic Center is located within the Wellness Center and features a 3'/6'/3' depth pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and shower area. The facility is very clean and well maintained. Towels are provided, as are spacious lockers for use during your visit. The heated pool is placed within an area with a restful colour scheme (no glaring lights!). Fast-paced 'workout' music is piped-in for those working with movement exercises. There are several access ladders, as well as a set of access steps into the pool. Additionally, access is provided for those needing wheelchair accessibility. It must be noted that while several pieces of water rescue apparatus are placed along the pool area, there is NO LIFEGUARD on duty, ever. The parking area is clean and reasonably level, with plenty of Handicap Parking available. Drexel Heritage Aquatic Center and the Wellness Center accepts members of the SILVER SNEAKER program, at NO COST! This allows visitors carrying membership in the Silver Sneaker program to continue their wellness programs when away from their home base, or local residents access to a fine gym/pool at little or no expense. Consider the Phifer Wellness Center your very own 'Workout 'Gem' in the Upper Piedmont'!

They were able to schedule my first appointment right away and Dr. Umbel was absolutely spot on with the diagnosis and course of treatment - MRI and surgery within a week. I am home, recovering, feeling great and so thankful for his experience, ability and wonderful bed-side manner. He even came in for my surgery on his day off. What dedication and concern for his patients! Thank you all so very, very much!!! The surgery was conducted at the Valdese Community Hospital in Valdese, NC. From the time I entered the Outpatient Surgery section I was impressed with the way I was treated. They were on top of everything, from the time I checked in until I was discharged every one of the staff was professional, capable, engaging and a pleasure to be with. They always had my best interest, comfort and concerns in mind as they helped me through each phase of the treatment/surgery. A special thanks to Katie, Renae, Michelle, and the rest of the nurses and PAs, anesthesia techs and Dr. Jill the anesthesiologist and the entire surgical crew.
