This is a great place for beginners. I hadn't touched my guitar in years hence I looked into taking some classes. The group is typically small thus the instructor can work with everyone. At the end of classes, they expect you to perform at their mini-concert. I learned how to play Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin and Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison because of this school. read more

I have been enrolling as a student for the NYC Guitar School since last year and I have to say so far it is one of the best choices I made in my life. As a person who has the spare time after work. My lessons at Brooklyn Guitar School have unlocked a whole new level of guitar playing for me. I've been taking one-on-one lessons with Kyle for 10 months, but could see some real progress after just a couple months of attending lessons and practicing consistently. When I first started, I could barely play basic open chords. I could not play guitar and sing at the same time, let alone get through an entire song. As a singer, this was frustrating; I wanted to be able to perform without depending on someone else to play guitar for me. Now, not only can I perform on my own, but I can also play songs that I once thought were way too advanced for me. This is all thanks to Kyle, who has a way of making the insurmountable seem totally doable. He assesses where you are and provides you with the tools you need to improve, all the while staying supportive and non-judgmental. He has taught me how to play various songs, but more importantly, he's equipped me with the skills and confidence necessary to teach myself and stick with it. Not to mention he is a very talented musician himself! BGS is a great place with knowledgeable teachers, friendly staff, and very welcoming vibes. I can't say enough wonderful things about this school. I've been taking classes at BGS for 3 years and have gone from only being able to play a couple of chords to feeling confident enough to perform at open mics. I've been taking Kyle's ensemble class for over a year and it's the highlight of my week. He is a talented musician and an incredible teacher who does a great teaching us technique and theory in a laid back, patient manner. He's also just a really wonderful person! I took my first lesson here probably 3 years ago and I've been going every Tuesday since. I've not only learned to play guitar, but we have played gigs at The Way Station, I've met new friends and had a blast all along the way. This is the most amazing place to begin or continue on a musical journey. Every one from the teachers, to the managers, to the desk assistants is vested in helping each student progress and achieve musical greatness! I'm always sort of suspicious when a place has endless effusively positive reviews. But I gotta say, I am lovin my experience at Brooklyn Guitar School. They have a well-reasoned system in place here and the instruction is really really good. I am just past class three of Absolute Beginners and am already able to play some of my favorite songs. They provide good resources for learning outside of class and it really all comes down to how much you are willing to commit to practicing. Had a great first session with an amazing instructor. Unfortunately, he fell ill 4 hours before our 2nd session and had to cancel which is totally understandable. I had to cancel my next session and did it 38 hours instead of 48 hours before. Caroline replies that I still will be charged for my session. When I asked if their 48 hour policy works both ways, i.e. if I have to get penalized a session for not giving notice within 48 hours, then I should get a session credit if a teacher cancels less than 48 hours, they said no. It only works one way. I canceled the rest of my sessions and Caroline was completely ok with losing by business! ‍ read more

Four years ago, I was given a gift certificate to Brooklyn Guitar School after my wife researched it online. I had taken guitar lessons back in the Bronze Age when I was a kid, and I love music of all kinds (OK, maybe not too much disco or Dixieland at any one sitting, but otherwise, let 'er rip). BGS teaches a series of incremental skill- and song-based beginners classes that allow you to quickly learn chords, strums and technique, play cool songs right away, and have nearly illegal amounts of fun while you are doing so. Koby taught my Absolute Beginners classes and I have been with Michelangelo ever since. They are both accomplished professional musicians; and experienced, enthusiastic and patient teachers who make sure you get it right while you're having a great time. Taking group lessons also allows you to interact with other noobies, support each other and learn together. Two of my guitar buddies and I (who took the absolute beginners classes together) joined up to take "Guitar Ensemble" classes with Michelangelo over the past three years. We get to customize our curriculum, learn cool new stuff, and continue rocking out enjoying each other. The school also sponsors open house sessions, sing-alongs and vocal classes, and group performances. They use performance as a focusing technique, and offer regular showcases at local venues, so we can strut our stuff and see how far we've come. The school has a wonderful funky, laid-back vibe; and is welcoming to old and young students alike. The staff is uniformly cool and helpful-they can't do enough for you (from suggestions about buying an instrument to helping replace a busted E string.) So I am several years into my guitar journey, a proud graduate of their "Beginner" classes (an "intermediate" or "advanced intermediate" type?); and it's just great to be able to fell like I can actually "make music" every so often. My daughter (started age 9) has been taking private guitar lessons with Shirley for 14 months and enjoys it! She was able to learn fun songs (we wish you a merry christmas, viva la vida, galway girl, blackbird, etc.) that she chooses and loves singing along. Dylan, my teacher, strikes just the right balance between teaching me things every guitar player should know and letting me decide what to learn. The people are so nice, the facilities are charming, they're a great part of the neighborhood community and I'm finally learning drums! I have been taking weekly lessons with Kyle for 4 years, when I picked up a guitar as a neophyte. He has made this ride most enjoyable.
