A talented, intuitive, intelligent, encouraging, and impactful coach that has guided me to so much growth. His impact is vast and noticeable in both my personal, singing, and corporate/professional life. Jonathan takes the time to get to know his students/clients and is then able to truly show up for them--he's always present. His work is highly tailored and you can guarantee when you leave a session with him, you'll feel lighter, happier, stronger, and empowered. He taught me things about my voice, and how it translates to other (seemingly) non-vocally related aspects of my life; I'm talking eye opening, jaw-dropping type stuff. Over a year of working together on a bi-weekly cadence, the learnings are endless, awe-inspiring, and quite frankly, worth every penny and more. 5/5 stars doesn't feel like an adequate rating when you're talking about life changing work but, I suppose it'll have to do. I've been working with Ellie over Skype only over the last 1.5 years. I have taken around 35-40…read morelessons from her over that period. I've always loved to sing but never taken formal lessons. Let me start by saying that Ellie is an extremely perceptive teacher that - as shocking as that is - notices more about my posture and body tension over a Skype connection (often a crappy one) than I initially noticed myself. I didn't know how to breathe properly - Ellie taught me how to breathe. I have tried taking lessons with other teachers and I heard comments on how good my breathing is. I have found that learning to breathe properly gave me a deeper, fuller sound. Ellie's perceptive instructions helped me eliminate tension and bad singing habits. I love the exercises she gave me, they are fun to do and really build the voice. Doing them over and over again helped me build both my speaking and singing voices - with much less tension. Ellie is also careful when teaching. I had a bad vocal injury from another teacher that rendered me unable to sing for around 6 months. Ellie was very supportive and helped me rehab my voice. I really appreciate that Ellie is kind and careful and makes sure we don't do anything that could mess up your voice. Finally, I really enjoy every lesson because we start with various scale exercises - each time I learn how to use my body/voice properly. At the end we sing a song of my choice to a karaoke track that I play. This makes lessons a real vocal work out, challenging (but safe) and also great fun because I get to sing the songs that I love. I am bilingual and I love that in addition to all the English songs that I love I can sing songs in my native language - and Ellie is totally on board with that. Finally, Ellie is a very kind, fun person with an amazing sense of humor that immediately puts you at ease all while giving you valuable feedback that you need to hear! He was fantastic. He went at a pace that worked for me and totally calmed me down as I was pretty nervous. And guess what? I CAN sing but have been doing it wrong for all these years. I firmly believe that in terms of vocal teachers in a Orange County, Jennylyn Chung is as good as voice teachers get. Her traditional Bel Canto style of singing is especially what makes her studio so fantastic for every style of singer. I started taking lessons from Jennylyn because I had talked to one of her students, who recommended that I try a lesson with her. The voice teacher I had before Jennylyn had me straining and belting, which hurt in the process and eventually did negative things to my voice. For so long, I was under the impression that singing was work and that this wear-and-tear I was experiencing would eventually iron itself out, which is what my teacher seemed to think. She didn't seem to take my concerns seriously and brushed them under a rug. Right off the bat, Jennylyn started helping me rebuild my technique. Unfortunately, I had to start from square one again because everything I knew was strained. Since then, Jennylyn has helped me take almost all of the tension out of my voice and replaced it with comfortability, ease, and confidence. I cannot say that I've quite arrived in the time that I've been taking lessons from her, but I know that with every day that passes, I'm getting closer and closer to my goal. I'd recommend Jennylyn to anyone and everyone who is serious about learning to sing well. Don't waste your money with teachers that teach at a university and claim to be an amazing teacher by backing their argument up with their degrees. Jennylyn does have a Masters in vocal performance (if I remember correctly) from Cal Baptist University, but her experience in the real world, having been with countless misguided teachers, is was really makes her the most competent voice teacher in Orange County. Jenny's extensive experience with many types of teachers and teaching styles gives her a clear picture of what vocal students often go through. She knows a damaged voice when she sees one and she can help fix and repair it. Even for those without damaged voices, Jennylyn knows how to lay the foundations down so that you can reach your full potential, no matter where you've come from in the time that you've been singing. The bottom line is that if you want to take voice lessons with a teacher who really knows what technique to teach and how to teach it, come to Jennylyn. I can't imagine that you'd be disappointed.

First time around, I was confused. Wait, we start from bottom of range and build up to a higher…read morerange? I was used to being told by my previous teacher that I needed to start from middle of range and vocalize to the top to build on the lower range. What I did not realize is that her purpose is to get all of her students to sing relaxed with a neutral larynx position at a quiet volume and build up to a large sound once the vocal chords can relax from bottom to top without stretching the chords. The key is a gentle and natural zipping of the chords that occurs naturally when we speak correctly, however with a background of vocal strain some gentle vocalizing is required to build strength in the vocal chords so that you have one, unified voice and not two or three distinct voices. The whole process might seem unusual and unlike other teacher's you have studied from, but I assure you, she has spoken the most sense to me than any teacher I have ever had and I have had several at the university and throughout the seemingly professional community of south and north orange county. I am appalled that there are not more quality and caring and gifted teachers like Jennylyn. She is not only great at breaking down things in an easy-to-understand way, but she is a kind and giving person who will truly support hard-working and driven individuals. She will encourage you and challenge you and she will help you reach your goals, be that becoming a better singer for fun or a professional career.

I have been a…read morebroadway actor for 8 years, most recently in Beetlejuice the Musical, and I FINALLY found a brilliant vocal coach, music director, arranger and accompanist. But Scott offers so much more! Due to the pandemic everything has gone virtual and because of Pearson Studios I was able to pivot during the pandemic. Scott also has a state of the art recording studio and is a fabulous sound engineer and videographer. I now have a commercial voice-over demo (which landed me a commercial agent and a few v/o gigs), and also very professional self-tapes for my theatre and tv/film auditions. Not only does he offer his accompaniment and coaching skills, but he uses a professional microphone and protools, and a very fancy camera and back drop which totally ups my game! He also offers excellent acting coaching as well as acts as my reader. He is a one stop shop! Once I went to Pearson studios all my stress was taken away. I started receiving callbacks and just booked a brand new Off-Broadway show from only my self-tape submission. I can't speak highly enough about Scott. He is very professional and personable and makes music and theatre fun. I promise you'll have an amazing experience.

Emilio Tostado (guitar) ROCKS and Anthony Hollock (piano & voice) is a [Jesus Christ] SUPERSTAR! More on these amazing teachers below. I've been taking my boys (now 10 & 8) to BGS for years, and I count ourselves so lucky to have everyone who works there--teachers, schedulers, managers--as part of our community, really our extended local family. Everyone at BGS is genuinely encouraging, supportive, enthusiastic. They are also laid back, easy to talk to in person, and super helpful on the phone with questions. The teachers take care to suggest songs to learn that kids know and enjoy; they ask the kids what they like to listen to and go from there. They all take the time to explain to parents what they've worked on and what to practice during the week, and praise the kids to us parents, too. Lessons have gone long when the teachers can manage it; they follow the kids' leads and don't rush them out. My 10-year-old has experienced a few wonderful guitar teachers through the years (because the teachers are young and occasionally move on as they work on their own careers--but BGS manages transitions with sensitivity). Emilio is all the adjectives above and more--patient and kind with a kid who has really not yet developed a passion for his instrument and is not really diligent with practicing during the week. He's brought my son along to another level in six months. My kid is currently working on "Centuries" by Imagine Dragons, and I can see his pride in what he's now able to play. My 8-year-old started voice coaching and piano at BGS when he was 6. Anthony has given him support, encouragement, praise, and a great time every week, on top of superb, professional coaching in voice technique and performance (he throws in acting help, too). Anthony has worked with my son as his voice has gotten deeper in these two years (as the mom, I didn't even notice the change) to increase the depth, strength, and richness of his singing and increase his vocal range. My son is less enthusiastic about piano, but Anthony follows my request that he split the lesson time and work on giving my son some facility with piano, and he's patient and supportive there too. He's always attentive to the kid's interests and uses them in song selections to spark as much motivation as possible. Anthony is always cheerful, and we both look forward to our time with him, even though my son gets 45 minutes of his time and I get 5! My son is rather fanatic about musical theater, so being able now to accompany himself on "Memory," from the musical "Cats," has him pretty excited! read more

I was given a gift certificate to Brooklyn Guitar School after my wife researched it online. I had taken guitar lessons back in the Bronze Age when I was a kid, and I love music of all kinds (OK, maybe not too much disco or Dixieland at any one sitting, but otherwise, let 'er rip). BGS teaches a series of incremental skill- and song-based beginners classes that allow you to quickly learn chords, strums and technique, play cool songs right away, and have nearly illegal amounts of fun while you are doing so. Koby taught my Absolute Beginners classes and I have been with Michelangelo ever since. They are both accomplished professional musicians; and experienced, enthusiastic and patient teachers who make sure you get it right while you're having a great time. Taking group lessons also allows you to interact with other noobies, support each other and learn together. The school also sponsors open house sessions, sing-alongs and vocal classes, and group performances. They sponsored an ACLU fundraiser by teaching "Songs of Peace and Freedom" (This Land Is Your Land, For What Its Worth, Redemption Song, City of Immigrants, If I Had A Hammer). We played the songs again in Union Square Park this past June. The school has a wonderful funky, laid-back vibe; and is welcoming to old and young students alike. The staff is uniformly cool and helpful-they can't do enough for you (from suggestions about buying an instrument to helping replace a busted E string.) So I am over a year into my studies, a proud graduate of their "Beginner" classes; and it's just great to be able to fell like I can actually "make music" every so often. I have been taking lessons at the Brooklyn Guitar School since November. My teacher, Dylan, really makes learning guitar a super fun experience! I tried (unsuccessfully) to start learning on my own for a bit and I was very unsure of where to start or if I was actually doing anything correctly. That's how I knew I needed to commit to classes. I needed to have a structured schedule and someone guiding me throughout this guitar learning journey. I am soooo glad that I made that decision! I know I couldn't have come this far without Dylan. His teaching style is very supportive and upbeat. I always leave our lessons feeling great. The entire school is so nice, supportive and welcoming. Omigosh. This place changed my creative life. I literally thought it was impossible for me to learn the guitar. Jason, my teacher, proved me wrong! Not only can I pick up the instrument and make a legible sound, not to mention play a hit song or two, I can have fun while doing it. I think this school has a brilliant model of teaching all ages (I even heard kids as young as 2 years old learn to play!). By the end of the 3 hours the song is played as a group in a performance type setting. Past SONG LAB songs include Rebel Rebel, Sweet Child of Mine, Creep, My Girl. SONG LAB is an amazing way to start playing with other people, test your skills, learn new skills, learn a song you have always wanted to play in record time, meet other musicians that you will see again in either virtual or in person classes, open mics, or join in rock band. My overall experience with NYC Guitar school and their top tier teachers has been so gratifying - I highly recommend Song Lab to anyone new or seasoned - it is a lot of fun.

Never having sung before in my life, I was a bit nervous and uncomfortable booking a voice lesson…read moreahahaha but in my 27th year on this floating rock I have learned that life is WAY too short to not do things you want to do just because you may be a bit embarrassed. I have found leaning into discomfort is where the comfort is. I walked into NYC guitar school on the 7th floor of 251 W 30th St ready to test my vocal prowess. The entrance is beautifully curated, with guitars coating the walls every direction you look. Immediately I was struck with a creative energy that I was excited to be around. I checked in and sat on the couch as I was about 15 minutes early. My middle school basketball coach would always say "if you're on time you're late." I normally am late but on the off chance I'm not I love to throw that quote around. Gaby, the girl giving my lesson, came in and got me off the couch. Her vibe was RAD. As we walk down the hall into a separate sound proof room thoughts began running through my head. "She better not give me any kind of compliment about my voice or she will create a monster..." I thought to myself while picturing my band selling out the Garden 8 nights in a row. We sit down, and she asks me what kind of music I like. I begin to give my spiel that I give everyone about how I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers and J. Cole, but I'm not a corny J. Cole fan as I saw him at the house of blues in 2010. I am always hopeful this will build some credibility... She immediately names DEEP cuts from both artists that I didn't think there was any chance she would know. "I'm in the right place..." I say to myself. I begin to tell her how I have never sang, but think I have good energy for it and how I kinda think I have a nice voice hehe haha. "You don't need to be a great singer to be a great frontman," she says. BIG mistake, Gaby. That is the first step to creating a monster. She begins to ask about me and what I like to do and I coyly tell her I have a major passion for writing. I'm really shy (shy monkey emoji). "What kind of stuff do you write?" She asks. I told her I write in my journal a lot, as I don't want to tell her the bulk of my writing is yelp reviews she'll think I'm a nerd hahaha. I eventually do tell her my unrelenting passion for writing yelp reviews, and we share a laugh. She then asks "have you written any songs?" I mean of course I have, but haven't we all? I initially resisted giving her a hard yes, but eventually did tell her "I have written a few..." "Will you sing one for me?" she asks. I was taken aback. My internal dialogue "She wants me to sing? In front of her? wtf?" I then immediately snap back into reality that I did indeed pay for a voice lesson, so she probably needs to hear me sing ahahaha. I said the same to her and we had another good laugh. She was so great at calming my nerves, saying things like "I PROMISE you I've heard worse," "Just have fun with it!" I have a bit of a moment here, sitting across from the stranger with anxiety rushing to my head preparing to sing when I hardly even sing to myself seriously. I take a deep breath and begin: "I knew right when I seen ya, I knew that, that I need ya Where you from, Valentina? What's your drink, tequila soda? That's your friend......" Alright I can't give y'all all of it, come to one of our shows at the Garden to hear the rest. My voice cracked a couple times in the beginning, but once the nerves died down a bit I felt I did it justice. "WOW! That was actually really good!" Gaby says. "You have a nice voice and a unique sound which is rare!" Maybe she was gassing me up a bit, but I'm taking that compliment and RUNNING with it. She immediately tells me to keep going and runs to her piano and starts playing notes to try and get the key I am singing in. Once she finds it she runs over and picks up her acoustic guitar, and starts playing chords along with my voice. Next thing I know I am singing this song that I wrote playing over chords, that was so F'in cool. Overall, the experience just made me realize how I need to be around these kinds of creative people more often, it's just so inspiring. Gaby gave me some things to work on until our next lesson! My experience has been learning from scratch, but Jimmy has students at every level including professional musicians. I decided in January 2012, to try guitar lessons. I was almost fifty-five at the time and could not play an instrument or read music. I searched the internet for guitar instructors in Manhattan. One particular review said Jimmy Rose insisted that you learn music and not just the guitar. I called to see if he could give me lessons, but he wanted to meet me before committing. He came by the apartment and somehow a fifty-five year old conservative accountant from Texas met his approval. (Jimmy most definitely has none of these characteristics in common with me.) All he cared about was whether I really wanted to learn guitar. Since then I have had a lesson with Jimmy every week, including an eight-month period that I took by skype. My daughter and one of her friends now take lessons from him. My granddaughter takes piano lessons from another of his students. Everyone at work knows who he is. My doormen and our friends know him. He is a great friend to our family. Jimmy has a music degree from Eastman School of Music, and his exceptional knowledge of music and guitar will become apparent over your first few lessons. He starts with the basics of reading music and playing the guitar from the music. (Listen when he tells you to play slow and to tap your foot to keep the beat. I still struggle with those after almost six years.) He assigns you increasingly complex pieces picked to teach new skills. He will laugh when he reads this, but for a while I thought I might one day see the limits of Jimmy's music knowledge. That will never happen. He is extremely professional in his approach and arrives prepared for each lesson. After a while he may even bring sheet music that he has scored specifically for you. There have been numerous times over the years when my work conflicted with my scheduled lesson. He is always far more concerned than I am that we find an alternative time in the week. I give him a hard time that he should take a vacation every few years. If you want to learn about music and become the best guitarist you can be, then Jimmy is your guy. I don't play the guitar well. A little bit of talent would help, but I am hooked on learning about music and guitar from Jimmy. He believes in his ability to make me into a musician. His confidence has been really important when I have struggled or felt discouraged. He just doesn't accept anything other than moving forward. I have no defined end goal. This January will make six years that I have studied with Jimmy, and I plan to stay with him as long as I can. If you are lucky enough to find an opening in his schedule, you will learn why all of his students give him five stars. And by the way, I believe he under prices is services.

I've wanted to be able to play songs so when friends come over for dinner, or perhaps while camping, we could do a sing-along. I'm now learning "Zombie" by the Cranberries and "Safe and Sound" (a request from a close friend). Bryan has a calm demeanor and is such a good listener, by which I mean he can read what type of energy or mood I'm in and adapt the lesson accordingly; e.g, each session feels entirely customized, and he adjusts as I learn. We've covered a range of song styles, plus learning tab, ways to read music (I'm a true beginner!), how songs are composed, and techniques like hammer-ons and finger plucking. I'm also learning about keys and how to use a capo. It's fun to have a side quest at my age; i like feeling progression and notice my brain changing. There are ways I can play now that aren't even part of my rational mind, and bringing that musical intuition online feels more human somehow. I'm over the moon happy that I found Bryan.

He's helped me learn songs that I never thought I'd be able to play due to them being too complicated / hard by breaking them down into more manageable pieces that slowly build back up to the whole.
