Delicious ham and cheese pancakes! They're soft, savory, full of flavor, and so much more…read moresatisfying than the ones at any pancake houses in the area. I try to stop here for a pancake whenever I'm in The Netherlands. My husband loves the Uitsmijter Speciaal, which I think is an uitsmijter (bread with fried egg on top) with ham, cheese and mushrooms. I didn't try any but it looked yummy.
The service is pretty fast here, and very friendly. The only thing I'm not as fond of is that in The Netherlands service always seems to be either bad (rude), or a little too personal (nosy waitstaff). At Batifol it's the latter. My husband walked in a minute before me, because I was putting money in the meter and it was raining. So when I walked in, three men standing behind the bar stared at me, and then one yelled out loudly: "He's already waiting for you!" Okay... Then later as we're eating, we're using our cell phones and he says very loudly: "Oh, you guys don't talk to each other anymore?" which is one of my pet peeves. Why do so many waiters think it's okay to comment on your personal life? You wouldn't say that when people are reading the newspaper, well, we read the newspaper on our phones in the morning, because we're not 80 years old and don't use paper versions anymore. Besides, we live together and both work from home, we happily spend 24/7 together and have for the past 11 years. But are we required to have a lively conversation 100% of that time? And what business is that of the waitstaff? A lot of Dutch people seem to find it very difficult to keep their commentary on other people's lives to themselves.
Oh well, I shouldn't complain, at least the service is friendly and their nosiness ("curiosity" as the Dutch like to call it) is entirely well-intended. Besides, the food here is great, and you get a free cookie with tea or coffee! So we'll keep coming back.
