I came in with what showed in the report as blood pressure of 208/100. After lying there and…read moregetting some tests done, a few hours later, it showed 138/75. I asked the doctor "what happened? How did you bring that down?" And this was a question I asked because I'd like to remember that if it happened again.... the doctor said, "don't worry about that number." I'm in the ER thinking I'm dying and I'm just supposed to accept a sudden turn of a medical condition. Then they said, "we found nothing" and "I should check with my primary care doctor (which I didn't have at the time)".... So after the visit, I try to make appointments with doctors covered by my insurance in the area... one told me next appointment was in 2 months, another was 4 weeks... one mocked me because I was really upset and crying about this (as I was terrified because I thought I was dying)... basically, no one cared. The hospital didn't seem to. Their answer was "the doctor did everything right" because apparently malpractice was more important than what the actual condition could be or was. They wouldn't bring it to a cardiologist despite acknowledging a problem with the heart... they just figured "it's fine. Go home" I didn't need to be admitted but I wanted some answers... and they had no interest in giving me any. Either they didn't know or were more interested in shielding themselves from a lawsuit which I had no interest in filing. I literally wanted to know because my mom nearly died from something similar... but apparently, that's not important to anyone but me. Only reason I got some answers from other people were that the patient portal they have gave me all the lab results and test results, so I sent that to a family member who's an RN. I didn't even get to sign discharge papers... they just put an X there as if I signed them.

When my primary care physician of 15 years announced his retirement at the end of 2019, and…read morenotified his patients to find a new doctor in the next 60 days, I was concerned that it would be difficult to connect with a different doctor as well as I did with him. Change like this is seldom easy. But, I was lucky. PennMed had opened a family medicine facility in nearby Lower Makefield and had brought in several younger staff physicians who were establishing new practices and looking for patients. Already familiar with their excellent work in Philadelphia from personal experience, I contacted the local office via their My PennMed website and got an appointment for the following week. I met Dr. Li and was immediately won over my his direct, yet good natured approach. He asked plenty of questions and listened to my answers. He obtained my records from my former provider and quickly understood my medical history and unusual aspects of my health. He simplified my prescriptions, updated them, and asked me to return in 3 months with new lab work to be sure we were on the right track. Dr. Li gained my confidence almost immediately. Turned out that this operation included inhouse lab work in the first floor, so I no longer had to make visits to Quest Diagnostics to give blood and urine samples. The data was provided directly to me and the doctor through their website within 48 hours, and he was contacting me by phone to schedule an appointment to review the findings. Quick and easy. A little more fine tuning on meds and preventive health, and we were set for the rest of the year. Have to say that while I was comfortable with my now retired doctor, that I really didn't know what I was missing by not being part of a state of the art medical practice. My former family doctor was very good. Dr. Li and PennMed are even better.

Buyer beware! I went to get my arm xrayed at the beginning of April and was charged over 10k!! I…read morewon't wind up paying it all because of insurance but am still on the hook for over 3K. The actual xray was done well and the technician was very professional. However, the check in process was extremely cumbersome. It took longer to check in than it did for the actual xray! Don't go to this facility for xrays unless you like paying like 10 times what others charge for the same service!

The pandemic has put delivery of medical services in catch-22 overdrive. Wait in the parking lot,…read morecall, no we'll call you, answer ten Covid questions, remember your insurance card and retrieve your loved one under the gold awning, only when we tell you. And did we already stress the importance of the damn insurance card because... we want to get paid. I deliver the patient hermetically sealed in bubble wrap and head out to cool my heels at the local mall for two hours while they were put through the gauntlet of tests and procedures by a faceless army of technicians and care coordinators all I'm sure representing a distinct cost center and link in the wellness revenue chain. When we're done, we'll call you to retrieve the "financially obligated" (patient is so passé) under the gold awning. Don't get ahead of yourself buster, we'll call you. My two hour food court exile over, I return to find the gold awning and circle the facility until air traffic control clears a landing slot. The call comes, they'll be out in exactly seven minutes. Flaps down, I approach the awning and wait. Seven minutes turn to twenty and I'm getting disapproving body language from the orderlies who are apparently paid to be disapproving. Why are you here? I don't know, waiting here with a Panda Express time bomb in my stomach just felt like a day worth living. Well she'll be out shortly, she's just settling the bill (Genius, extract payment before the drugs wear off.) Just another tale from the bowels of corporate medicine. The Capital Health Leviathan moves on. Next. Two stars for the privilege of participating.
