We were camping down the road during the 2015 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and we decided to stop and check out the Broken Spoke Saloon. This place was much nicer and cleaner than the Buffalo Chip Campground. We wish we would have stayed here instead. Pulling into the property on the motorcycle, you have to actually drive through the bar, and out the back to get to the parking area. As mentioned by another reviewer, this bar is actually more of a pole building with a bar inside, but so are most of the other bars in the area (Beaver Bar, Full Throttle Saloon, Buffalo Chip, etc.) The bar was clean and fun. They have a stage for live entertainment, but had recorded music playing while we were there. Visitors are allowed to visit and use the pool area. The pool area looked very clean and relaxing while we were there. There are a couple bars located in the pool area. I'm not sure if this bar/campground is open year round or only during the motorcycle rally. From whatI could see of the campground, it looked clean and well organized. This place appeared to be smaller and quieter than other campgrounds in the area. We did see some nudity around the pool area, so this campground probably isn't suitable for children during the motorcycle rally! read more

This was my 15th trip to Sturgis since 1997, and I have to rate it the 3rd worst experience due in no small part to the Broken Spoke Campsite. In the interest of full disclosure I will explain I did have bike troubles (exploded rocker box) that was not thier fault, and in fact the main criticism was the weather, also not under the control of the BS management. But anyone who has visited this area in august will know that the weather can be unpredictable. So why build a campsite on the top of a mesa, with no shade and nothing for at least a couple hundred miles to shield against the constant 40 to 60 mph winds. The heat of the sun was unbearable, but sun shades and easyups were just torn apart. At the end of the week there were more easyups in the dumpster than left standing. The management even started warning RV owners to not use thier awnings. And the wind was constant, all day, every day. On the positive side they do have a great pool, children not allowed due to "adult" activities. The pool was the only saving grace of a terrible week. The other problem is you are 11 to 12 miles out of town. They do have a small general store but expect to pay $3.50 for a small bag of ice and $15 for a 12 pack of bud light. The on-site bar is pretty good and the entertainment about average for Sturgis, there is better in town, but again the bar pricing is set knowing they have a captured clientel. The shuttle bus in to town is OK but timing is not the most convenient and another operation "da Bus" is better and calls at a lot of other campsites with a more frequent service. The site is "raw" there is no grass, more like scrub brush and dirt which turned into a dustbowl. The staff were courteous and helpful, the showers and bathrooms kept clean. But the positives were no way enough to make up for the terrible location. I will not return, and that was a pretty consitent refrain heard around the campsite. read more

We stayed here during bike week in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. .Since we stay in a motor home, the wind and dust are not as big an issue as it is if you are in a tent. Not every day is windy, and not every day is hot. The "biker swimming pool" and the pool parties and poolside bands and bars are fun. Everyone is supposed to be over 18 in the pool which means "anything goes" and you will see a little nudity now and then, and it's not always the women. The presence of children would change the whole mood of the place, and sure enough, someone brought kids into the pool in 2013. I was surprised that none of the lifeguards asked them to leave. The other campers have all been decent, and most people are friendly. We have never seen any fights, and none of our stuff was stolen. We like the option of staying in the campground at night and seeing the Broken Spoke bands. Overall, it was a great experience. read more

What a great place! We arrived on Wend. Before the rally and was given a nice spot with power and water. No sewer hook but they have a pump truck to empty your tank.. A little green generosity goes a long way here and our tank was emptied everyday. The bathhouses were kept clean by an on site tenant. 20 pound bags of ice were $5.50 but they are $4.00 at Walmart in rapid city.. So not a big deal. The store also gives 10% discount to veterans! But again a little green generosity goes a long way.. We tightened up one of the workers there and she delivered ice to our campsite everyday.. It was great. I know there were some issues but with all things considered and the amount of people there I have to say a great job broken spoke. Also while there we visited both Glenco and Buffalo chip campgrounds! They were both shit holes.. The spoke blows them away. Campground is nice and quite at night. The reason for the 1 star is we booked Sturgis week for FULL HOOK UPS. We get here and they place is in the "knuckle head" campground area. And tell us "full hook up" means 50 AMP electric and a septic truck will drive around and empty the RV. And a water truck will come buy and fill your fresh water. Yes I don't think most people care about where its at and what the campground looks like if its clean as most people are there to ride. Third year there and feel its the best and lowest price compared to even paying 15 dollars per night. Like the free entertainment and you can bring the cheaper food and beer from home if you want. The wind is just part of it and no better at any other campgrounds that I saw. Might have to bring a tarp in case we get a big hail storm that would help. The campgrounds with the trees and in the valley seem to have the same winds is what I saw. So I say give it another chance and maybe the weather will be fine! read more

This place was a Joke. We started to refer to it as the "Broken Joke" because we paid for full hook up (Electric and water) and when we arrived they stated they "overbooked like hotels" and we could only get electric and water would be brought to our site. Well guess what, the water never came when WE needed it, the tanks were not emptied when the flag was put up. We paid the tank truck $20.00 to empty our tanks because they were overflowing.The staff was clueless and when you had complaint they would state that everyone was complaining. So disappointed!!!!! We visited Broken Spoke last year during the day a couple of times and thought it would be great to stay there for the week this year. Little did we know that a wedding was in our future. Our son proposed to his girlfriend and set a date that is during Sturgis 2015. Since it's 7 months away I really didn't anticipate there being a problem cancelling. Also, with it being the 75th Anniversary and they are anticipating so many people. Re-booking will not be a problem. But instead when I sent an email. They simply said, "Sorry, no refunds this year". What bull! He did say that he was going to put my spot back on the list as available. What a crock. So they are going to collect double rent on my spot and not send any money back to me. I'll never go there again!!! And I'll write a negative but true review everywhere I can!!!! read more

Didn't get what we paid for!! Paid for full hookups. Got electric only with water suppose to come from water trucks. What a joke. Took days for the water truck to come. If I had wanted to dry camp I would have brought my tent. Don't stay here!! You won't get what you pay for crappy service crappy buses that are always breaking down the list goes on and on read more

I have mixed feelings about the Broken Spoke. The camp ground itself was just what we were looking for. Not to crazy not to boring. There was always something to do and lots of fun to be had. However I paid for full hook ups for the week back on December 1st of 2014 for the up and coming 75th sturgis anniversary. Mid year we received an email asking when we would arrive and depart because broken spoke wanted to set up sites based on what would be convenient for campers. When we arrived there was no organization to where you would be placed. No hook ups. When we spoke to Charles who everyone said was in charge, his attitude was horrible. We were told basically tough shit. Then given a long excuse about the ownership changing. So although the broken spoke was a great campground to stay at. I was disheartened that I paid for something I did not receive. I was not reimbursed for it and I was taken advantage of. I understand situations come up and they did the best they could to accommodate everyone but I was sold something I didn't receive and there was no empathy in reimbursement. Sad to say I would find it hard to stay at such a great place again based on how we were treated. read more

We were here for the 75th anniversary rally. Buffalo Chip was booked already so Broken Spoke was our second choice. The first day was a little chaotic, we reserved a 50 amp spot but apparently they were all out, so we were stuck with a 30 amp. Couldnt run our AC because it kept blowing the fuse. But they rectified the situation as soon as they could and we got the 50 amp by the second day. The dust is bad but not a huge issue.You are camping and not staying in a Ritz hotel. The pool was awesome, by far our favorite spot for the hot days. Easy to get drinks and food. We were worried about the distance into town, but it honestly wasnt bad at all. The cops are BAD out there, DO NOT DRNK AND RIDE. They have a shuttle bus that will take you to Easy Riders if you want to party and not ride. There were a few fights on the bus but you will get that when you mix alcohol with idiots. Was not a fan of their bar, which is a huge open barn. Not enough seating and not good flow. People were just standing in random clusters. Only problem we had was someone stole some cases of water and beer we had left out in the coolers over night. So don't leave anything outside, it will get taken. The campground was surprisingly quiet at night. And the bathrooms were clean and easy to get too. Would recommend bringing your own golf cart getting around is kind of a pain. We would definetly stay there again. read more
