Ever notice those racks of yellow bikes at various places around Brisbane. Those are the…read moreCityCycles. Now the scheme is a reasonably good idea, and I love the lessened environmental impact that comes from bike riding, but Brisbane just does not seem to have warmed to CityCycles the way people hoped. Maybe it is because it has been raining too much recently, or the fact that picking up a CityCycle is not as easy as it seems. First thing to know is that you need to have a subscription. You can get annual, three month, weekly or day subscriptions which you can get online. You then have to log on at the CityCycle terminal and select a bike which then gets unlocked so you can ride it. You then have to return the bike to a terminal (which can be any one in Brisbane). So unfortunately you sort of have to do your research, subscribe, find out where all the terminals are and buy a helmet before CityCycle is any use. Not all that convenient in the end. The biggest issue, however, is that by law you need to wear a helmet. You can pay extra to hire one or buy your own. But that is just another thing to worry about when it comes to CityCycle. In the end it is all a bit too much of a hassle for me to bother and I end up just taking the bus or train instead with the bonus extra of not getting sweaty.

Ah Brisbane. When you steal other cities awesome ideas, you should probably make sure they'll work…read morehere. This is a great idea - in flat, temperate cities where you don't have to wear helmets. Unfortunately the fat cats in City Hall seemed to have forgotten that when they dropped bucket loads of cash on this scheme. It was no doubt an excuse for an expensive 'study trip' to Paris or Amsterdam, but what it has resulted in is less street parking and less money in the budget to support just over 1,000 users. Oh and it's a great source of news fodder for lazy journo's looking for a ready made beat up story. I'd like to see some of the politicians jump on a bike on a humid Brisbane day, don a potentially lice ridden public helmet and puff and sweat their way up hill and down dale to get to work. HA. I'm pretty sure they'd rather catch public transport (and that aint never going to happen).

Gear has some of the most badass two-wheelers I've seen, and from seriously cool designers like Corratec, Cinneli and leader (to name a few.) They also stock a highly covetable range of clothing, head ware, shoes, books, sunglasses, watches, bags and bike parts. The staff are pretty helpful but prepare to part with some greens as frames alone can go for up to $1000. For seriously good Gear, I highly recommend checking this place out.

My boyfriend is into cycling, although doesn't ride a fixed gear, and loves Gear for its cycling accessories. Whilst the trend amongst hard-core regular cyclists is lycra all the way, "fixies" as they call them, have a trend of their own, much more street cool. With their swirly bicycle logo, Gear does a great t-shirt for $29.95. My boyfriend has a black one with white logo and it's lasted him ages. I recently bought him some socks from there, which cost a whopping $20 (apparently there's something special about cycling socks) and he loves them. Made from a slightly lycra-ish fabric that's supposed breath well, they're also supposed to be ultra-durable. The ones from Gear also come with their little logo on it. This tiny little store is packed with things--clothing, helmets, frames, pedals, seats--literally, the walls are covered with stuff. So if you're a bike enthusiast of any kind, you're bound to find something of interest in there.

The guys who work here are nice, especially Gavin, who is willing to explain even the tiniest insight to someone who doesn't know anything about bikes. He went through the bicycle lights and helmets with real patience. This is a bit of an old fashioned place with old fashioned ideas about business. They take your first name when your bike is given a service and they're good at getting the repair done on time. All in all a pretty good experience.

Wanting to see Australia and needing an adventure at the same time, I decided to go on a bike tour while the daughter was studying for upcoming exams. I was on campus several times and visited this shop. I hadn't brought my bike with me to Australia, so I spent quite a bit of time talking with the store personnel about a new bike and my plans once I had the bike. They all cycle tour as well and had a lot of information about the route I wanted to take (Brisbane to Sydney along the coast). Once the bike was selected and outfitted they put everything together for me and threw a few things in for good measure. They added things to my repair kit that I wouldn't have remembered myself like a couple of spokes and a tire boot. After everything was put together and I was ready to go, Jeremy sat down with me and wrote out several route options based on his experience from cycle touring to Sydney. He made suggestions that were invaluable and checked on my progress while I was en-route. He also found a bike shop in Sydney and called ahead to alert them that I would need the bike packed for a flight back to the states and then emailed me the contact information. The service in this shop is extraordinary. This is just something we don't find very often anymore. It is indeed very old fashioned service. They believe in going the extra mile and I was treated as if I were going to be a customer for life. By the way, I cycled a total of 616 miles (991 km) in about two weeks. Everything along the coast was beautiful and I would never have seen it all had I not been on a bike. Australia is the world's best kept secret.
